Clippy Posted April 22 Im from baxck in the day when Minesweeper actually came on your windows 95/98 / played a lot of it in school n stuff, especially typing class lol What started as a joke got me back into it, have a little series here Does anyone these days even know how to play it lol - its a really polarizing game I think So my current thing, as a side gig, is adding one more mine to expert mode each time. I just completed 103 - we will see how far I get lol 13 Share this post Link to post
Naarok0fkor Posted April 22 On Intellivision, it was called Minehunter... 4 Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted April 22 Minesweeper is fun, uses just the right amount of brain to be a good little diversion which is why I guess I associate it with being unmotivated at the office Can’t wait for you to find a 7 it’s gonna be a wild time (Yet to meet an 8 without plugging in ludicrous NUTS-level custom settings first) 3 Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted April 22 I remember it, I had a really old computer, windows 98 and windows 2000. I didn’t think you can beat minesweeper. I’m shure there is people doing just that on YouTube. 1 Share this post Link to post
ducon Posted April 22 It exists here with a shitload of other games (playable online, in Windows and it is even available in Debian). 4 Share this post Link to post

It's a fun game, pretty addictive. When I played it regularly I was able to break sub-100 seconds on Expert once I think, though nowadays I average times around 150-200. There's also a Doom rendition. 4 Share this post Link to post
Chris Hansen Posted April 22 I remember it well. Played it sometimes on what I think was Windows 3.11 and later Windows 95. I sucked at it. And funny you should bring up this thread because I had a pupil of mine today who wanted me to see a game and it was minesweeper. He's 12. And he's insanely good at it! But then again, all he ever does is solve Rubic's cubes in all shapes and sizes, so I guess his brain is wired completely different from mine because I can't solve those either! :D 4 Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted April 22 That game that I feel like came pre-packaged with all computers of the late 90s that was apparently consumed voraciously by homemakers among others? I don't know how you couldn't. Although it's never really been something I've spent much time with. 1 Share this post Link to post

That's the one I was going to recommend. It's built so that there's never a situation where you have to guess, unlike the one with Windows and most others. Quote The first square you open is guaranteed to be safe, and (by default) you are guaranteed to be able to solve the whole grid by deduction rather than guesswork. (Deductions may require you to think about the total number of mines.) Also relevant Karl Jobst video 4 Share this post Link to post
ChaingunChaCha Posted April 22 Loved playing it as a kid alongside solitaire and space cadet pinball. I always liked that your first click could never be a mine. Like it added the mines at the point of your first click or something. 2 Share this post Link to post
z34chris Posted April 22 Minesweeper? sure! it is also available as "Hexsweeper" in a really popular MMORPG. Really fun game either way. 2 Share this post Link to post
Roebloz Posted April 22 I remember, but I've always been more of a 3D Space Pinball kinda guy. I did make Cacosweeper Doom though! 2 Share this post Link to post

riktoi Posted April 23 If you want to challenge yourself with Minesweeper-adjacent gameplay give 'Tametsi' a try! It's only 3 bucks on Steam and it really gets you thinking how to solve some really complex setups, and comes with several forms of gimmicks like hex cells and colored tiles! 2 Share this post Link to post

That game got waay too hard for me :| You've checked out the Hexcells series, right? 1 Share this post Link to post

Aaron Blain Posted April 23 Whenever I want to space out for about 90 seconds while using the computer, I alternate between SkiFree and JezzBall. They both run perfectly in Wine, but I also use Windows 3.1 a lot. I'm fond of Minesweeper but the unavoidable deaths by guessing put me off. 2 Share this post Link to post
smeghammer Posted August 8 I wasted so much time playing this on early versions of Windows. Loved it! 2 Share this post Link to post
Panzermann11 Posted August 9 (edited) Yeah, I remember. I was never able to beat a single game though. Edited October 1 by Panzermann11 1 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted August 9 Yeah, way too many hours spent on this. Pattern recognition is a big part of speeding up solving. I see someone has made a 4D version: https://schluentz.de/4d-minesweeper.html 2 Share this post Link to post

RichardDS90 Posted August 11 Funny this thread came up, literally played it last night courtesy of Action 52, thank god aside from board designs, they didn't botch that one up. 2 Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted August 12 Quote It exists here with a shitload of other games (playable online, in Windows and it is even available in Debian). +1 for Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzles from me as well. I actually have it installed on my phone and I play various puzzles present in the app. No ads, light size and tons of different games it has. 2 Share this post Link to post
