Why doomwik.org than fandom doom?

Recommended Posts

I have seen many people and some DooM tubers hate or dont like the fandom doom wiki and I sill have not found out why so could anyone explain why?

Also I am not saying that you should use fandom btw.

I mean... just LOOK at it, man. Multiple annoying ass ads. Outdated articles. And honestly it's just much uglier than the neat and organized DoomWiki.

Yeah “it looks like shit” is the most immediately evident reason and honestly reason enough not to use it. But everything else everybody has said already is more important to why everyone justifiably avoids it like a dead raccoon.

Fandom is slow, buggy, and filled to the BRIM with ads and bloat. its also subject to far more wiki griefing (or vandalism) than most others, because anybody can edit pages, which is good sometimes, but not the best thing overall. the only time i use it is if there isn't a different alternative to the fandom one.

It also uses these "funny" terms like "rip and tear" in explanation paragraphs. While Doom Wiki follows every single official Wikipedia rule, it seems like Fandom articles are either copied from somewhere else or written by teenagers.

I thought it was more than ads and other bullcrap because I ASSUMED there was more misinformation compared to doomwiki.org.

Good night.

If you know how bad wikia/fandom is, then you know the answer to your question.

For more info on why Fandom is the absolute worst, here’s over an hour of info on the topic:

But TL;DW: Fandom as a website is the definition of the term “enshittification”

In addition, due to Fandom's weird under-the-table dealings it usually appears higher up on search results than the "proper" Doom Wiki, which doesn't exactly make people happy.

I believe this is not the case anymore, at least in most of the Google searches I do about Doom where the true wiki pops up first.

In the recent years, more and more wikis have made the switch from fandom to other hosting sites for extremely valid reasons (quite recently happened with minecraft but there are several more examples). If you ever, and I mean ever tried to use fandom on mobile you will realize how much of a shitty website it truly is. Like literally half the page is filled with ads and unnecessary stuff to what your reading and it can get extremely slow. Ads are also a big problem on the desktop version but not as ridiculously as on mobile.

Fandom is also not really as customizable as other wiki farms or your own wiki from scratch which is why doomwiki looks much better than the fandom one.

But sadly despite most people's best efforts when you search "doom wiki" on google the fandom link still comes first and the mods at fandom refuse to remove the wiki (obviously because it brings them more money from ignorant people).

I personally use the Indie Wiki Buddy extension to immediately redirect a fandom link to the independent wiki if there is one available but the truth is that due to fandom's relative popularity and refusal to delete wikis, it is quite hard for wiki owners to us another wiki farm. Doomwiki has been pretty successful and I hope that more wikis start to switch away from wikia after getting inspired by recent more popular wiki switches.

The DooMWiki.org is my go to for Wads and Secrets when doing UV-Max runs.  Been playing since 94 I don't remember where every secret of every level is for every game especially when my mind is focused on the countdown timer.  It's great to have the Wiki up on the 2nd monitor so I can glance over and remember anything I missed.

TLDR:  Clear, Not Cluttered, Easy to Find what you need.

Because the fandom is a corporate molloch that doesn't respect its end users, the readers. It just wants money like every other corpomolloch out there.

I prefer being where the knowledge is. That happens to be Wiki.org.

There is definitely misinformation on the fandom, which is a consequence of allowing people with no knowledge edit it.

Aside from everything else, Wiki.org is just very oldskool and very clean, as it should.

fandom doom wiki

Back when it was Wikia, it was a much better platform

Now it's a website you can't visit without an adblocker because ads will make you go nuts.

It also has questionable decisions made

So glad everyone understands that wikia sites with 50+ ads are basically impossible to not use adblocker on. If only the owners of those sites could just understand that too.

Doom's Fandom wiki page seems to be copypasted from DoomWiki.org

Regurgitation of other peoples points but Fandom Wiki is full of ads

You should also use the Combine OverWiki for Half-Life info and Bulbapedia for Pokemon info since both of them are more reliable than their Fandom counterparts

Basically avoid fandom wiki when possible

I've been using this too, it's quite helpful for telling me about wikis I didn't know about as well as redirecting me to ones I did know about but don't turn up on top of search results. Link for the lazy: https://getindie.wiki/

If you really need to view something there, do so via the BreezeWiki proxy network for a much leaner and cleaner experience. No editing of course, but that would be a waste of time and effort anyway.

Another data point: DoomWiki.org has five times more content, especially on community activities and creations (23,427 articles and 36,923 files, vs 4,088/8,198). As I said before, it is the one true community wiki.

The biggest difference is that it doesn't have Xymph and Xymphbot. :)

For anyone struggling with ads on mobile devices, I can highly recommend getting Firefox for mobile and then installing uBlock origin as an adblocker. Works like a charm and you don't have to suffer through annoying ads.

That being said, the fandom wiki is lacking a load of information, especially things like walkthroughs / secrets for hundreds of pwads. At least it was the case a little while ago, I'm not sure if anything changed there. I will not be visiting that website again regardless unless I misclick or something. The difference of quality in articles is quite noticeable, and I much prefer the clean MediaWiki layout over whatever fandom has going on. The video ads which stick to the top of your page when scrolling are completely inexcusable and were the reason I started looking for mobile adblockers to begin with.

I cant even research stuff from other games if all they have is a fandom wiki without Adblock that should say enough but it also NEVER lets anything go. Many game wikis have left fandom but the Fandom wiki is still there because Wikia shows up higher in the search because of how popular the site is/used to be but if I’m researching a game or something for map ideas or because I play other games with customization and its fun to have fictional stuff in there but Jesus it’s just a terrible website. Like don’t go there just don’t unless you need too

Even worse, some games already had an existing independent wiki but Wikia had to go and make their own copy anyway. For example the UESP has existed as a wiki since March 2005 (and had a long history as a static site before that), Wikia created their copycat Elder Scrolls wiki in June 2006.

Install "Indie Wiki Buddy" and do not ever visit Fandom if external Wiki exists, they are way better than this non-customizable full of ads crap, which is Fandom all about.

In theory Fandom is good, but on practice.. unfortunately, it isn't and they don't even care!
