what are classic doomers thoughts on doom 64 in 2024?

Recommended Posts

What are your guy's thoughts  on doom 64 in 2024? Does the game being available on PC offer a new perspective of the game? Did having it be available on N64 first hinder the reputation it had? or is the game just ok at best?

People should play the best wads made for Doom 64, as the PC Reputation it had a very good start and many videos with positive opinions.

It's good, worth playing for sure as a fan. The official PC version doesn't really change things for me all that much as I've been playing D64 since the Doomsday engine TC back in 2009, followed by EX five years after, as it's still Doom but arguably plays better on a mouse and keyboard despite being perfectly doable on a gamepad (helps that Doom doesn't have a lot of buttons and at least outside of the re-release are completely mappable, something even the PS1 version of the game did that the re-release did not, but I digress.) It was kinda annoying for me as early as learning about the game more in the mid-naughties because I effectively missed out on an entire Doom game and a cool looking one at that and at the time my computer was too shit to even run the Doomsday TC which nowadays is little more than historical curiosity as it's obsolete and only about 60% accurate to the actual experience. I loved D64 for years but think the game nowadays is just fine; don't get me wrong, the aesthetic is awesome and I love the new music and there are plenty of memorable moments or great looking set-pieces, but I generally find this level set overall to be my least favorite out of the entire classic franchise, barring Doom 1 I guess for just being really limited / still having some residue leftover from the Wolf3D mapping days with all those cramped rooms with low ceilings.

I played the first few maps of it a while ago. I really like the custom sprites in it (as you can probably tell by my custom title...) as well as the colored lighting and atmosphere. The level design wasn't my favorite though, I'm not a fan of obscure switch hunts.

It's great. I've always loved it though, from back when it dropped and people were telling me that DOOM64 was apparently "shit" and "old-fashioned" and GoldenEye was the better game. Hard disagree back then, harder disagree right now. It's a more atmospheric and considered romp than the DOS originals, but its own brand of fiendish fun.

I like it, I memorized the maps from beginning to end.  It has Even Simpler which is the sequel to Dead Simple in DOOM II.

Some of the ambient level tracks are scary, DOOM 64 holds its own imo and it helped me not quit the series.

It's cool. Don't necessarily expect it to hold up like Plutonia does because it's not really to modern Doomers' tastes. Although the Doom 64 custom community has been making great strides in that direction. Pandora 64's going to have at least a few slaughter maps for instance. And when morewads come out with Arch-viles and Revenants, they'll be even better.

Doom 64 is pretty cool. Its popular enough that it spawns many mods for it even still for various formats such as mutators and campaigns. I've had my own fingers in some of the mod making based on it.

It always felt like a bridge between Doom and Quake for me.

It's a gem. Colored lighting should be a basic right, not a privilege.

Oh, and check out our compendium for those wanting to make custom D64 maps.

I mean, Midway did port the first two Quake games to N64 as well... Even the composer is still the same.

I don't like it. It emphasizes the mazey exploration parts of Doom and has dull combat, so it isn't to my taste. It also doesn't have the chaingunner, revenant and archvile which are some of the best monsters. So yeah, in my opinion it sucks ass.

Doom 64 has always been my favorite game in the series, even when I had to play it on my N64 and reset the controls and brightness settings every time I turned the console on.

I'm not sure if you're already aware of it, but the reverse-engineered source code means that there are now N64-oriented forks with many kinds of QoL improvements (including but not limited to controls, brightness settings, and save states), such as the Complete Edition. The Compendium also has its own page for the engines, including the aforementioned N64-oriented ones.

It's pretty good now that you can actually friggin' see it instead of having to squint through the darkness and blur of a 1990s TV in a room that gets natural sunlight.

Im sure if doom64 was released on pc and it had every monster from doom 2 in it, everyone wouldve been making wads for it instead of doom 1 & 2. Doom64 is one of my favorite doom games.

I mean, there have been a bunch of custom D64 maps, both before and after the Remaster release...

1994 DooM Vet here and DooM 64 is one of my top 5 DooM Games.  Perfectly captures the Action & Horror theme perfectly.  The Ambient Sounds (also used on Playstation's Final Doom) are my favorite ever made.

Doom64 was my first doom game on the actual n64. Back then I couldn’t read cause I was like 4 or 5. My dad told me it was Army of Darkness cause of it having a shotgun and chainsaw. I thought the enemies were deadites lol. Could never get past level 6 until I was in my teens and finished the game on the n64. I thought it was great some levels are a drag though. Every so often I’d bust out the n64 for a bit to play it. Happy to see it’s way more accessible. I also played the doomsday TC way back when. Now I have it on my switch and Xbox. As well as Brutal doom 64 mod. Also the D64afire mod which is neat to apply to classic wads like AV and such.

Classic Doom has better gameplay, but Doom 64 has better atmosphere.

It's quite a neat addition to the classic Doom line-up, I like it. The maps featured throughout the campaign are rather solid, showing off the colored lighting and the newly introduced environmental altering features whenever the need be, consistent in their style and complimenting the game's fantastic soundtrack in a neat fashion, creating an atmosphere that's both foreboding and fun to play with.

I'm not particularly a fan of the monster redesigns for the most part, and some that I do actually like don't click with me in terms of aesthetics. Redesigns such as the pain elemental are an objective improvement over the original's goofy meatball. Others I consider to be downgrades from their original designs, such as the Cacodemon is now the goofy meatball instead of the pain elemental, Mancubi are now BDSM gimps, Lost Souls look like they've got a mohawk blowing with the wind, or the imps now looking like bootleg Xenomorphs.

I also didn't quite like the plot in any capacity. It's trying way too hard to sound edgy that it comes off as cringeworthy to me. At places it feels as it was written by the same people who were behind Hatred. (Don't make your protagonist sound like a massive edgelord, please.)

Apart from these criticisms (which you shouldn't care about, since I'm just another person with an opinion on the internet) it's a pretty good game.
