Bad Pixels, a Commodore 64-styled Wild West indie sandbox FPS game

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Usually I'm very skeptical of modern indie game devs who claim their game has retro aesthetics (due to reasons such as less limited technical limitations, rendering such aesthetics not exactly accurate), but this one just nails the C64 aesthetics well enough to be different from other such titles, at least to me.

You can still pre-order the game and have your name included in credits (158 slots remaining as of when this was written).

Planned (main) features include the following.

  • 16 missions to complete.
  • 5 Boss fights.
  • Mission Editor to share custom missions.

I'd been following the development of this game for a bit, glad to see other people talking about it

Also had my eye on this for some time, I absolutely *love* the aesthetic here and would love to get lost in it.

On the one hand, it does look cool. On the other, between the flat 3d and the voice synth, it feels like a crossover between Town With No Name and FAITH. I am curious if the game will end up being just as memey as those other two (though at least FAITH is unironically good).

Incredible tech-artist work in mapping the C64's "vibe" over a 3D world, but there isn't really a lot of game shown off yet. Which I suppose is due to it being developed by one person, but hopefully they can give the whole cowboy-gunfights bit as much love as they've given the visuals.

They atleast nail the look perfectly right. The only other game that reminds me of this is the hilariously named The American Delta Vengeance Action Blood Force Kill Commando.

Okay that's hilarious. Both the game and the Let's Play vid (I miss when the attitude they rock there was still common in the internet back then, at least to an extent).

Also, I assume you're also aware that Locomalito (the guy behind awesome retro-styled games such as L'Abbaye des Morts, Maldita Castilla, Hydorah, and many others) also made 8bit Killer, which kinda reminds me of that (although much less tongue-in-cheek)?

I agree that the YouTube videos put on the Itch.io page seem a bit lackluster, but for newer updates you can check his Bluesky account.

While we're at it...

I was very interested in playing this. For a minute I thought I was looking at a SuperCPU accelerated demo. Play it back at 0.5 FPS and I would've been fooled.

I'm not sure how authentic it is to the actual Commodore 64 experience, but the early untextured 3D look is spot on. I have a bit of a soft spot for this kind of stuff, although my childhood experience was with PC EGA in F-19 Stealth Fighter.
