I think it was OpenGL + ZDoom, since the GL renderer was its original selling point over ZDoom.

Graf Zahl is also the German name of a character in Sesame Street.

 

This is one of those memes that is just plain unfunny.

What's with this response? The OP is relatively new to the community, and this is a fairly normal question to ask. I don't know what "memes" you're referring to here.

The meme where GZ stands for. And it has been asked quite a bit in the recent past.

 

But i get it, it seems we are shifting away that we should be forthcoming to these questions, so i shall do that from here on out.

The main reason why GZDoom became more popular than ZDoom is because the latter stopped receiving updates. Besides, both were community efforts with more than a hundred contributors.
