[BETA] Escape1M1 - a short puzzle map - testers wanted!

hi all, so i've been working on a little puzzle map using only vanilla doom mechanics. it's been a fun challenge! there's still a lot of work to do in terms of visuals and polish, but the puzzles should all work. so if anyone could record themselves playing, ideally with "thinking out loud" commentary, that would be REALLY appreciated! i wanna see how hard/easy the puzzles are, where people get stuck, any unintended solutions, etc.

 

DOWNLOAD (Google Drive)

Port tested: GZDoom - NO jump/crouch, free-look optional

Format: Vanilla, BUT relies on non-vanilla behavior, so it's best to use GZDoom.

IWAD: DOOM 1

Difficulty level doesn't matter

I tried to give it a go but it defaulted to the original Doom level - is that because I am using GZDoom?

are you using the doom 1 iwad? doom 2 would not work.

 

i only use GZDoom too. command line:

[your GZDoom exe] -iwad DOOM.WAD -file escape1m1.wad

First third seemed easy but the barrel bit felt a little too much like trial and error. I did look at the other parts they just required more careful observation

thanks again for yet another video!

 

it looks like you were not able to walk on top of the barrels - that's critical to solving that one. i wonder why that might be..which port are you using? i've only tested on GZDoom.

 

from your video, there's a few issues i can see already - will try to fix these.

Some issues:

It looks like the stairs in front of the blue door are on the wrong side. Can't get up to press a button. In order to open the door after the blue one, I jumped over the barrier with the button. I don't think it should be like that.

I couldn't complete the second puzzle with the barrels. No matter how I try to hide, the explosion gets to me. Looks like there are 1 or 2 extra barrels in front of the shelter at the end, I can't get there.

thanks so much for playing! you're right that you're not meant to jump over the barrier :) here are some hints for both:

the stairs are on the intended side. you need to get over there, somehow, without lowering the blue bridge. look at your map!

the barrel is indeed blocking the shelter..but just barely! 

 

i'm curious how you solved the first barrel puzzle too?

the only issue was how you found the secret. did you jump up to the switch? the intended solution is different, but it's a pain in the butt anyway, which is why i kept it as an optional secret.

Yes, I decided to jump. Still this does not affect the main playthrough any way.

Crispy Doom, although I think DSDA works the same way. I just saw vanilla format and thought it might work on another port. Guess not.

mm i see. technically the format is vanilla, but i guess i'm relying on a GZDoom behavior. i'll edit the post to make that clearer.
