Wolf3D engine games worth playing

Recommended Posts

So I've been in a Wolf3D mood lately. After finishing Spear of Destiny (I'll probably skip the mission packs though) I'd like to try Blake Stone or Corridor 7, which seem to be the ones with the best reputation online. What do you guys think about those two games? Is there any other Wolf3D engine games you consider worth playing?

Of course there's ROTT, which is great and I've played a lot.

Corridor 7 is very good, but only when compared to Operation Body Count.

Otherwise it's very bad.

Echoing what everyone else said: Blake Stone is probably your best bet. It has a few things that wouldn’t be popular in FPS games until years down the road.

Corridor 7 is ok, it’s probably the “least worst” of games made by Capstone. But there’s just so many other games you would probably have a better experience with.

You might want to look into some of the wolf 3d mods that are standalone projects, basically TCs, but as far as official titles definitely Blake Stone Aliens of Gold and Planet Striker.

Corridor 7 is by far the best game from Capstone, and while it has its shortcomings, there’s a lot of good ideas within. It’s worth giving a chance.

I do not recommend Operation Body Count. It just isn’t that great.

Cybertag never officially released, so no clue how that could’ve been.

Super 3D Noah’s Ark is actually fun but the theme isn’t for everyone. As a DOS game it’s OK.

Also if you want to step backwards, play the Catacomb 3D titles and HoverTank. They use an early version of what would later become the engine for Wolf 3D. Those games are fun, but have less repeat replay value overall.

If you liked Wolf3d that much, I'd think you'll love Blake Stone. Although, it has its own unique let-downs, namely the bosses/minibosses which are quite lame overall. But the rest of the game is a real blast with the same basic gunplay of Wolf plus much needed variety.

Corridor 7 is cool but significantly more janky and annoying to play. It has a bizarre atmosphere, where Blake is violent but also has a light-hearted side and is more colorful and with a jammin soundtrack, C7 is just dark, eerie, and unsettling throughout. As much as I enjoyed it back in the day, at this point I'd rather just watch some lets play videos to enjoy the atmosphere without having to actually play the game :)

It honestly looks more like the Raven engine. Though I wouldn't assert that it's what they used. Just like when I watched some gameplay video of it, it strongly reminded me of Shadowcaster. I mean, look at the gameplay outside of the cutscenes and grammar quizzes...

Spoiler

Although not on the Wolf3D engine, I enjoyed Nitemare 3D back in the 90s.

Very similar in the walls & textures department, especially since all walls are a fixed height the entire game and orthogonal (90 degree angles only).

Worth considering for a 90s FPS if you're in a Wolfenstein 3-D era mood.

Blake Stone Aliens of Gold was indeed excellent.

Corridor 7 I only played its demo (it was probably shareware?) and I distinctly remember not liking it and not even finishing the demo.

Rise of the Triad of course was fantastic, as you know!

Corridor 7 was not shareware (none of the Capstone games were, these were purely commercial, box-on-the-shelf titles), but it has several (I think three) demo versions one level each, two of them being pre-release and having certain differences from the finished game.

Indeed, how could I have forgotten that one!

Also there's Unsung, which I think is partially based on TW code, and features music by Bjorn Lynne.

Believe it or not, I bought Corridor 7 back in the day and that was what I was

stuck on playing when Doom came out. I didn't really care for Wolf3d much

then and felt Doom was more of the same. But now, would I play Corridor 7

now? Hell, I can't even find it in my collection old stuff here! I have a much

better appreciation for what Doom is/was these days and although I think

Rise of the Triad is an excellent title with some great improvements over

Wolf3d, I'd prefer just about anything based on the Doom engine instead

now. Too, all the different source ports have added so much flexibility to

Doom that I haven't a reason to play anything else now...

except Bejeweled 3's Poker...
