Category 1, died to MAP06 having panicked into multiple uncomfortable situations. Not even the secret I discovered managed to save me from my inevitable DOOM.

 

Really satisfied with my run, and that's even despite not reaching the end; there was some crazy strategies I tried to go for that proved to be more than viable. That's not to say I hadn't cheated death; there were a lot of close calls, particularly on MAP01 (lol) and on MAP04, which turned out to be quite a surprise. There was a lot of time my screen was pure red and I was playing virtually blind. MAP05 had me in ropes but I managed to hang on, having been cornered in a map without corners :P 

 

Playing through the final stretch of Epic II yesterday and today certainly helped with handling hordes, I guess.

No problem, that's correct. I'm fairly new to running ironmans so I don't quite have all the rules down yet. After reading through them again, turns out that my interpretation of the categories is a bit off. I always thought a cat 2 run meant "prepared for" or "extensive knowledge" of the wad. My mistake. I'm not complaining, though. I actually found it pretty fun preparing for it, rather than playing through it blindly. May have to do more prepared runs in the future.

Oh look, an archvile, let's do the pain chance roulette only with a rocket launcher. Of course that won't work but it might die before I get blown up?

I don't think it would have made any difference in the end though. Shortly afterwards the map flooded itself with revenants, after which whatever I did seemed to let loose more crowds from which I could not run.

If that was normal difficulty I hate to see what New Game Plus is like! :)
