Standard Leaderboard

  1. [2] SURVIVED (41:20): Vytaan - Tried to go fast and almost bit the dust twice in the first half, adopted a slightly slower pace and breezed through the rest.
  2. [2] SURVIVED (1:00:52): Asbadagba - Impressive performance, with not much in terms of close calls.
  3. [2] MAP12 (56:46): joe-ilya - Death by bonfire.
  4. [1] MAP10 (36:48): Bertt91 - You can escape the captain once, but you can't fool it twice.
  5. [2] MAP09 (47:19): Anima Zero - Funneled to the circular staircase where a pair of skeletons did their best Gandalf impression.
  6. [2] MAP08 (22:36): Archvile Hunter - Stuck between a knight and a hard place.
  7. [2] MAP08 (46:01): Pseudonaut - 200% health and armor should be enough, right? Wrong.
  8. [1] MAP06 (24:38): LadyMistDragon - Killed the bodyguard, but succumbed to the star itself.
  9. [1] MAP06 (25:31): NaZa - Having support behind you is usually beneficial, suffice to say this wasn't the case here.
  10. [2] MAP06 (26:49): DisgruntledPorcupine - Dodged the homing missile but took the non-homing one like a champ, vile delivered the final blow.
  11. [2] MAP05 (31:26): purple_ruberoid - Thrown upside down by a sniper vile and slain by a puny zombieman.
  12. [1] MAP04 (17:57): Vince Vega - Sought to hold ground against the besieging forces, but the flaming reinforcements proved too hot to handle.
  13. [1] MAP04 (19:03): Beginner - Saved the megasphere for a rainy day, wasn't expecting a missile storm.
  14. [1] MAP04 (21:22): dt_ - Mind the snot.
  15. [1] MAP04 (21:46): Horus - The vile bouncers claim another victim.
  16. [1] MAP04 (24:12): Austinado - Showed how Good at DoomTM he is.
  17. [2] MAP04 (25:13): Andromeda - Still doesn't know who lit him to this day.
  18. [2] MAP03 (17:25): Wolfgun Shootner - Into the assembly line you go.
  19. [2] MAP02 (5:33): signaturereverie - Forgot that the goal is to survive, not blow yourself up.
  20. [2] MAP02 (5:39): SCF - Max damage homing missile and two high damaging imp fireballs in quick succession, bad RNG spares no one.
  21. [2] MAP02 (6:02): Suitepee - Brought a rocket launcher to a boxing fight, wasn't counting on his opponent having the same idea.
  22. [1] MAP02 (6:33): Grayfox - Let the cargo roam free and fled to find fuel, ended up finding death as well.
  23. [1] MAP02 (8:20): Li'l devil - Put to sleep by a sucker punch.
  24. [1] MAP02 (8:32): RjY - Lesson learned, the rocket launcher is not the ideal weapon to use in a melee.
  25. [1] MAP01 (102 kills): SilentD00mer - Exhausted all supplies and a zombieman promptly delivered the coup de grâce.
  26. [1] MAP01 (74 kills): CocoCaco - Overwhelmed by a pack of vicious zombies, went for a quick escape but the chaingunner had other plans.
  27. [2] MAP01 (63 kills): head_cannon - Limped off after getting blown up by the red key and stood no chance against the unlikely rev/shotgunner tag team.
  28. [2] MAP01 (30 kills): SleepyVelvet - Adopted a kamikaze strategy, yet still managed to rack up 30 kills AFTER going down (heh) to 1% health.
  29. [1] MAP01 (23 kills in 1:00): MxCraven - Mingled with imps and exploding barrels.
  30. [1] MAP01 (23 kills in 3:02): Pegleg - At last, the main attraction of the starting level gets first blood.

Prepared Leaderboard

  1. [#] SURVIVED (34:01): ByRntStarOEI - Practice makes perfect, and it shows.

What is the Doomworld Ironman League?

The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom!

In August 2024 the DWIronman League dies to Overboard (-complevel 9), by @mouldy. It's time to relax with this brisk 2022 Cacoward-winning megawad filled with summer vibes. mouldy's first solo release since the universally acclaimed Going Down in 2014, this set is comprised of fairly short levels that utilise the winning formula of the author's previous megawad to the fullest - the result is pure, unadulterated fun that starts out quite gentle before dialing it up to eleven when New Game Plus rolls along!

Essential Info

  • Doom II (doom2.wad)
  • Compatibility level 9, or "Boom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports
  • 14 levels (you have to finish MAP14 for your run to count as a survival)
  • Time estimate (total, if survival): 1-2 hours
  • MAP07 might seem like a credits level - it's not, shoot the imp to trigger the death exit

> Download Overboard

dsda-doom.exe -complevel 9 -file overboard.wad -record demo_name.lmp -skill 4 -warp 01

Rules

Spoiler
  • There are two competitions: Standard and Prepared:
    • To compete successfully in the Standard competition: your first play of the selected WAD(s) constitutes your one and only attempt for the month.
    • To compete successfully in the Prepared competition: your one and only attempt for the month is determined BY YOU immediately before play and may follow any prior number of active (playing the set) preparation that is strictly for practice/inspection purposes only. You cannot compete in the Standard competition after submitting a run to the Prepared competition. You may submit the first of your practice attempts to the Standard competition.
  • UV only (excepting 1CC format), continuous recording. No pistol-starting each level.
  • Demos (recorded using any port which can play back demo files, such as PrBoom+, DSDA-Doom, Woof!...), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread.
    • If you stream your run on Twitch, please highlight/save it so that it doesn't go missing in case someone's very late with the obituaries.
  • No additional WADs may be loaded. Cosmetic WADs are fine if they're purely cosmetic.
  • No inspection of the WAD(s)'s content in an editor if you are submitting a Standard run, category 3 included.
  • No cheat codes and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a Boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom/MBF (strict)" will suffice.
  • If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on the first map of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit.
  • You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels than their competitors will rank higher than them.
  • You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point.
  • You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details.
  • If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result.
  • Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will stop your run immediately. You will still be registered as entering the next map (i.e. the one which you never entered) using a calculation to figure out what the intermission time would have been.
  • If you are competing in the Standard competition, you are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]):

  1. This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I cannot remember any details that would offer a reasonable advantage over truly blind players.*
  2. This is not a blind run. I have familiarity with the set - played the level/set before, or watched it being played, and can remember some details that would offer a reasonable advantage over blind players.
  3. This is not a blind run. While I have not outright played it, I've watched the level/set being played via stream, demo or video after it was announced as this month's challenge.

* "Reasonable" in this instance asks you to consider whether the details in question are worth committing to memory. As in, you would thank the person who gave you this information with a straight face and not expect to be laughed at for being an utter berk.

I thought this would be smooth sailing, but New Game Plus caught me off-guard with its difficulty spike. I got really unlucky with an Arch-Vile resurrection, and subsequently was trapped and clawed to death. I'm fairly disappointed in this run, as I was pretty confident I could survive and make it out with a decent time, too.

Will play in two days. Based on the list of popular wad votes from 2023-24 that I compiled, Overboard ranks very high, in the top 10 I think.

Hahaha, I played through Overboard two weeks ago! Let's see if the holiday I just got back from made me forget about the maps and how to play Doom, or if it's still fresh in my mind...

lol, this wad sure has a sense of humor in terms of how it tries to get you.

Anyway, I've never played a wad by Cyriak before, but I've been a fan of his videos since I was a kid. I inevitably died on map 2, but making it to map 2 is already a good attempt for my skill.

oh and i got to map15 in 60:52, but i'm guessing it's map14 that counts

I consider survival as finishing MAP14 but good point, I'll clarify that in the OP.

121/463 kills

Exited MAP05 at 26:49, died at 30:04

Spoiler

Recently back from a Doom break, and great to return to a beloved wad. Didn't expect to make it past Archi-Pelago, so I'm happy with this one. Also, I kill 4 hell knights with the same rocket at one point which is pretty neat.

Category 2 run (I played this when it first came out in 2022).

Dead on map 2 to a Revenant, 127/133 kills.

Did the hard part of map 2's final encounter, then decided to die anyway due to "good at Doom" followed by "let's have this Revenant projectile do high damage". I am sorely tempted to stop doing blind/unpracticed runs for future Ironman attempts.

Dead: MAP10
Kills: 94/142
Time: 39:07

Hilarious wad, I really enjoyed it, I had never played this one, so as not to spoil it for you, just say that map10 trolled me.

I sincerely believe that I could survive this Ironman(since the last ones are a reflection of the first ones, but with more difficulty) As I said, I thought I had passed map 10, but when I had to go down again for the "key"... a cyberdemon said hello to me! And as you know, if he greets you, consider yourself dead.

Bad lucky, maybe worst decision, next time better!

Absolutely terrible.

Spoiler

I got really distracted and almost died on map 1 because I remembered there being a berserk behind a secret wall somewhere. There is no such thing. Then on map 2 I failed basic rev missile dodging and got flanked by a second one to immediately end my run.

Category 2, Dead on MAP01 with 64 kills.

Spoiler

I was quickly hunted down by all the new roaming monsters waiting for me when I returned up to the ship's deck. Look, I'm just glad that I scraped through the encounter in the hold and made it back at all.

The delivery of scares is pitch-perfect, and the layouts allow the roaming crowds of monsters to flow through the space and create these organic running battles as they force you to move & react. Top-shelf stuff, and it's about time that I got around to checking out how it differs on the UV setting. Excellent choice for this month.

I'm a bit proud of myself that I've actually completed this wad in one go. Figured I would have died at some point, but managed to pull through thanks to some prep.

I'm a fan of Mouldy's maps and so obviously this is one I played before. That being said, I never knew there was a newgame+ until reading this post, so I was a bit surprise when I learned of it. I figured I could probably complete the first set without much problem, but needed to practice hard+ maps to figure out how they played. That's the thing with this map set, once you figure out the "flow" of the maps, they can all be beaten rather quick and with less worries. Of course, this would be a different situation if all maps had to be pistol started, but even then the "flow" can still be figured out. I my opinion, this wad is a great example of "combat puzzle" and part of me believes Mouldy made these with speedrunning in mind, too.

So yeah, I did some prep before making this run, mostly with the later maps, but they were not far off from how the first ones played so I didn't have to spend much time practicing. The only part I had great uncertainty of was the start of Map08. I could never figure out a good way to reduce the RNG of where the Cyber decides to go, which was a major bane in my practice runs. That, and the great lack of ammo in the beginning if things end up bad.  Of course the Cyber decided to be a major pain in this run and show up where I didn't want him to, but luckily I managed to slip by. From there on till the end of the wad, it's all about invulnerability sphere management and taking the path of least resistance. My only other worry would be some bugs that show up seemingly randomly and end a run. Like, things not activating properly and being unable to proceed or stuck. Heck, in some of my first runs the exit of map07 would never work properly and just kept sending me back to the start of the level. This is more than likely the reason I never knew of the game+ maps cause I believe the same thing happened when I played it for the first time. Not sure why this happened at time, but it could have very well been something on my end. Luckily, everything ran smoothly for this run and there were only a few times where things didn't go quite as planned, but that is always somewhat expected.

Otherwise, this is a great wad and I highly recommend it.

Oh well. Another short ironman run. What are you going to do?

This seemed like a very approachable mapset, and a rather fun one at that. The setup of "Doomguy goes on a holiday, but Hell finds him" was well done. The levels, at least the early couple, weren't long or involved, but they were still put together well, with good encounters, good health and ammo, and good aesthetics. You had to stay on your toes. This was a good choice.

Survived in: 40:27

By far my best submission ever, mostly because I played this on my channel back in July and things were still pretty fresh in my mind, especially considering editing the footage makes you relive all the maps a second time. Seaside Siege was the exception - I finished both the normal map and NG+ with 0/4 secrets, as I couldn't directly remember where they were and was too afraid of dying while hunting for them.

Some very close calls in this one, interestingly pretty much all in the normal map set! During the first few maps I think I felt obligated to rush through as quickly as possible since I don't often know the WAD beforehand, but it almost became my downfall. In NG+ I definitely focused more on clearing enemies before moving on.

There's one intermission screen I stay on for about 10 minutes - not sure if that's visible in the demo, but if it is, hopefully it's no problem! I noticed I got multiple phone calls from my sister while I was recording, so I called her back during that intermission screen to check if everything was ok.
