Roebloz Posted August 3 ROMhacking.net (Which people frequently used to post their Console Doom ROM hacks) has, as of yesterday, been shut down due to drama concerning its owner and the lack of funding to keep it afloat, and it's now being put in read-only mode, with no new submissions being allowed (And the future of the site as a whole is uncertain, so who knows how long it will stay up) Concerning the low amount and low quality of alternatives, I hereby request that Console Doom hacks (Past, present and future) be allowed onto the idgames archive in a new category. Obviously only patches (IPS, xDelta, BPS, etc.) should be allowed to avoid any legal issues, but it would be very handy to allow Console Doom hacks to join the more traditional WADs onto the main archive with everything else classic Doom-related already being present. Thank you for your consideration. 21 Share this post Link to post
taufan99 Posted August 3 (edited) I'd like to second this notion as well. I believe @Immorpher as a Doom 64 connoiseur would also agree. Edited August 5 by taufan99 5 Share this post Link to post

Patches are now simpler than ever to apply (with web-based programs) and with the BPS format it really makes sure that only changes are stored in the patch. I will have my old Doom 64 Merciless Edition ready for submission and then Doom 64 XE eventually ready to go in a console patch archive for the N64. I think the readme files for such submissions should have hardware tested or emulation tested because that makes a big difference. 5 Share this post Link to post

AmethystViper Posted August 5 (edited) I couldn't agree more with this idea. These console Doom ROM hacks deserve to be preserved since they really breathe new life to console versions of the games. Edited August 31 by AmethystViper 1 Share this post Link to post
Xeebleton Posted August 6 I don't see why they shouldn't, especially since now it's hard to find good sources for console doom rom hacks. 2 Share this post Link to post
Roebloz Posted August 6 Glad to see all the support! And yeah, obviously we would need a new template for these specific submissions, but it would definitely be doable with not too much effort. (The only really important things would be the Console Doom version, ROM Region, and Tested on real hardware, though the last one could probably be already covered with the existing Tested with) 2 Share this post Link to post
plums Posted August 7 Current maintainers of the idgames archive are @Bloodshedder and @The Green Herring. I don't know whether or not the forums are a good place to propose this to them, but it's a good first step I think. 5 Share this post Link to post
BlueThunder Posted August 7 Definitely behind this as well especially after hearing about RHDN 0 Share this post Link to post
Muusi Posted August 8 Wish we had a patch that brings the kickass features DOOM Master Edition, like rumble support, into psx Doom and psx Final Doom. Seeing console stuff on idgames would be awesome. 0 Share this post Link to post
realjohnmadden Posted August 8 As someone who's definitely not obssessed with console Doom, I approve of this. It'd be incredibly useful. Now we wait for the Wolfenstein hacks section. (Not really, that's a stupid idea.) 3 Share this post Link to post

I know some people would argue about the legality of romhacks here (especially pertaining to other ports, what with the SNES port to be re-released in 2025 with significant changes), but in the case of the more recent D64 romhacks, these usually require the DOOM64.wad from the 2020 Remaster (which, fortunately, is close enough to the vanilla D64, especially thanks to the reverse-engineered source code from @Erick194 et al.). It might take some more effort for other ports, but with the source codes for the Atari Jaguar, 3DO, and SNES ports already out there (not including backports such as PsyDoom and rewrites such as 32X Resurrection), the sky (should be only) the limit. Midway64 Posted August 11 I advocate on this, having more stuff to play with would be great for the console players! Possible categories that comes into mind would probably be Jaguar, SNES, GBA, PSX, N64, and maybe... MAYBE 3DO. The library may not be as expansive as the amount of WADs published everyday, but given the stuff we have at our hands, we can probably make some great content for the ports, and it helps that since it requires more effort to get these things up and running, we may get more polished patches for these games. TL;DR - Just do it! 1 Share this post Link to post

Important to note that there will be no ROMs uploaded to idgames with this proposal. Rather they will be difference patches, which are generated by analyzing where the edits occurred and only distributing those edits. Thus only the "original content" will ideally be distributed. 4 Share this post Link to post
