SNES Doom Limited Run Collector's Edition ANNOUNCED

Recommended Posts

Now this is what I call good news.

A bit disappointed status bar face behavior remains all the same, but otherwise I'm looking forward to the release. Can't wait to see the missing/new levels in action!

The framerate is beyond belief based on the videos! Can't imagine the dark magic that went into making Doom run so smooth on a goddamn Super Nintendo! Great job everyone working on this.

Thank You for Pictures and video, this looks amazing!

The guy You talk with on video mentioned above sounds kinda like Randy Linden.

Despite all the things He did for us with snes DOOM for last couple years (interviews, code releases etc.) anybody know how much He is involved in this LRG project?

Great vid and detail! Gotta give credit to the folks who have the ability to restore and remaster such coveted entries and give it the love they deserve!

A brand-new re-release of SNES Doom has just been announced! It's gonna feature the missing levels, as well as Episode 4, on top of better performance!

How about Sigil? :D

Bro, have you seen how that thing runs on PS1? The SNES has no chance XD

Fun fact; @Roebloz once ported Sigil to the 32X port, which impressed John Romero so much he even nominated it for the Cacowards.

Now Sigil for the SNES might be possible, but even accounting this re-release update, I suppose it'd take even more storage/horsepower for it to run at an acceptable rate.

It definitely would. Especially when there are still some limits in play here, and the engine will only top out at 20 FPS maximum - the frames can't be DMA'd from the Super FX 3 to the SNES VRAM any faster than that.

That's not something you can solve by getting an even faster Super FX in there; that's something that's a fundamental hardware limit of the SNES.

I'm very curious about the music. Does this feature the missing tracks in the same soundfont as the original SNES doom music?

Have the tracks been rearranged to play on their proper levels?

I prefer the SNES distribution of music tracks (mostly concerning the tracks on E2M1, E2M3 which was in the E2M2 slot, and E3M3, and also Waltz of the Demons being exclusive to Limbo), but I guess you can't really keep it the same if you add all the missing levels.

I do not know Limited Run's release plans and have nothing to do with that, but given their whole business model, I'd be surprised if there's a digital release.

For whatever it's worth, at least one of the LRG cartridge releases I bought came with a ROM download so not out of the question.  Granted it was an indie game and most have not.

Emulators and flashcarts will definitely need to implement the new version of the Super FX chip, too, which makes this even less likely. Even if someone dumps the ROM on the day of release, no emulators or flashcarts will support it at the time.

Randy modified the firmware on the FX Pak Pro himself to run it for the demo. As long as they're being actively supported, this isn't impossible.

He did say the plan is to release the documentation on how the chip works (as well as the rumble controllers) for future devs/homebrew to use if they'd like to.

Long shot, but you have to ask:

Do the improvements include support for the Mario Paint mouse?

SNES Mouse is planned to be supported.

So does that mean there will also be source code release for this one or not?

Oh, and anyway, did Mopoz also come back for this? I know he's one of the first, if not the first, guys to discover SNES DOOM mapping, even if some people don't like the approach of only giving the tools to a few people.

Not sure about the source code, but Mopoz was not a part of the project. Nobody could get in touch with him.

They'd have to release the source. Randy licensed SNES Doom under the GPL after all.

In the QuakeCon stream where the prototype was demoed, it was asked if they're using an FPGA and they said that right now it was (in a flashcart) but it was simulating a faster SFX chip "with faster memory", so not far off period correct hardware rather than a completely custom chip design. We'll have to wait to see if they go with an FPGA in the final cart or emulate the SFX3 on a RP2040/2350. Framerate looked massively improved! The fact that this is such an expanded release is wonderful, a straight re-release would be a rude awakening as to how unplayable the SNES port is at times :P

Yeah. This is not running on an ARM core and just being pumped to the SNES or anything like that; this is an FPGA that is basically an enhanced SuperFX that's been improved in some ways (less wait states, can access more ROM, etc.) So it's running like a SuperFX chip.

Randy has said final performance should be a bit better too, but 20 FPS is the limit due to how fast the SNES can have data DMA'd to its VRAM. Even if we could render it faster on the SuperFX than that, we can't send the data to the system any faster than that. 20 FPS would put it right about in 486/33 territory.

Haven't seen anyone complain about it and since it annoys me I guess I'll be the first?  Was any thought given to branding this release "The Ultimate Doom"?  Always annoying from a collector standpoint when substantially distinct releases have the same name, granted it's not as bad as some cases I've seen.

Not necessarily true; as owner of the source, he can issue it under different licences any time he wants, he still owns the base copyright.

Only 3rd party contributed GPL code would be protected.

Of course. But it wasn't our call to make.

As you can see, SNES port upgrade is done by the powers of fans. Quakecon is just an event, such a project can be attached to.

  • PSX Doom is slowly but surely being updated by GEC team. Eventually, we may see a game in a condition that's gonna be worth calling the game a "Re-release".
  • OptiDoom can be considered a sort of "Definitive Edition" of Doom 3DO. The author stated on one of his streams that the game is mostly done. For example, not much can be done to improve the performance even further. The map-making setup was also demonstrated, so anyone can do the mapping for OptiDoom.
I don't think Rebecca Heinemann will produce her own edition of Doom 3DO or contribute to OptiDoom. Still, we don't know everything.

sorry for all that. I just never understood what's so special about snes doom other than it running on snes.

*shrugs*

I guess i am too young to understand

I think the cart looks ugly in blue. Should have made the standard edition an all red cart and the Limited Edition cart white like the PAL cart colour with red realistic looking blood spatter not the crap looking blood pattern that they have at the moment. Or made it a red cart with green blood spatter. I also don't like how the limited edition has a metal label with a black Doom logo when the coloured Doom logo looks better. And I don't know why they can't put "Super Nintendo" on the box, I know they might have to pay a licensing fee but so be it.

Nintendo is under no obligation to offer this license and I'm fairly certain they do not.
