Copy parts of one map into another

Recommended Posts

Is it possible for me to copy parts of one map and paste them into another in Ultimate Doom Builder?

I basically want to make a map full of assets and modular pieces of levels to be copied into other levels.

Yup thats a thing that can happen both legiitmately and illegitimately. Mainly just the usuals of permissions and whatnot.

On the technical side, Doom FreeRoam did this exact premise with Doom 1 and Doom 2 and added more flavor to account for the travel time between the now walkable locations.

I dont know how cuz I never sat and tried to do it, but yes it is definitely doable.

I think question was about could you ctrl-c map, then open different file and ctrl-v it there. Like, I think it was about technical side, not art stealing

Absolutely you can. You can create a "pre-fab".

Click and drag over the sectors you want to make a module of, press E to make it a selection, go to Prefabs menu tab and select Create From Selection and save it.

When you need to use it, just go Ctrl+P and select the prefab you made. Super easy.

Another way is to run 2 instances of UDB with the "donor" map and the "recipient" map open in each. They need to be separate .WAD files though (as opposed to 2 maps in the SAME WAD) as you can inadvertently mess shit up if you save either instance of a single open WAD in the wrong order. A simple copy/paste from "donor" to "recipient" usually works in this case.

Also, be aware of Z heights. If you're mixing parts of different maps together you may run into issues with sector heights being way out from each other so you may have to make adjustments to your sector Z heights.

While prefabs are fine, they're an unnecessary hurdle. There's also no need to have two instances of UDB open at the same time.

Simply copy a section from a map, then open another map and paste it there. If you have conflicting tags, you can resolve the issue by using Paste special from the Edit dropdown menu.
