How could you possibly leave out the Mario Bros games? That verges on blasphemy. They are the epitome of what a side scroller is.
I also like the Megaman games, they rock.
EDIT:
And pretty much everything else you've got listed there, except for Metal Slug, I never played that.

You should also try the Playstation version. It's the best side scrolling game yet, and it's BIG. Also it has one of the best ever soundtracks to ever be burned to a CD.

I've played that game I don't know how many times now. The graphics, music, and sound are very, very good, but the overall game is boring and no fun.

Nope. It's an old NES game, one of the last made for the system. I never played it, but from what I saw and heard about the game, it did not have even close the quality of the other games. I don't think it even had the same story.

2000th post, heheh.

In no particular order:

Mega Man series (The NES ones, 1-6)
Mega Man X (1-3)
Commander Keen (I prefer Invasion of The Vorticons over the newer ones)
Abuse
Metroid & Super Metroid
Contra (The 1st one)
XEvil
Soldat (back when it was freeware, anyway)

Yes! You are cool.

Contra force sucks. It plays like Gradius in that you aquire poweups at the bottom and press a button to "purchase" one when you've reached it.

Commander Keen series and

Shadow of the Beast, the Alien Vendetta of side-scrollers (at least as frustratingly hard).

Super Mario 3 is the first video game I ever played. It's still my all-time favorite side scroller. Because of nostalgia and because it's the best damn Mario game ever made.

The Metal Slug series is fucking beautiful. I love them all, but especially MSX and MS3.

Metroid is about as cool as it gets. Space boobies with eerie background music.

And of course, nothing could ever beat Sonic the Hedgehog. *WHIRRRR* ... ri-ri-ri-rinngggg ! (well, you get the idea)

Mario 3 is by far the best side scroller ever made. But then there's also...

The other 2 NES Mario games and SNES Mario sidescrollers.
The Megaman games.
Duke Nukum (Actual name at the time)
Duke Nukem 2
And such and such.
