Consistent-Money-990 Posted September 8 (edited) Been watching youtube videos about the whole Mick Gordon situation with Eternal's soundtrack. And honestly, all i can say, this guy sucks. And it's a damn shame that he has the gall to be the host of quakecon 2024 after what was all said and done. I am surprised that people didn't boo him off stage. And honestly, after having him stay around for The Dark Ages product, I am very, very mixed about how I feel about the game and the previous two other doom games as a whole. I love, both 2016 and eternal, but after hearing about what happened bts with eternal's soundtrack. I've kinda looked back on the game a bit differently. Don't get me wrong, i still love the game for what it is, but things really didn't have to go south for Mick Gordon when working on the OST for the game. I am sure the other hard working and passionate devs and the creative director had a good time working on the game itself. But the same couldn't be said for Mick sadly.. And, as for The Dark Ages, while the game looks visually good. The graphics, simply beautiful, and the gameplay looks stellar. Everything about this game, just looks so good. I just can't look past the fact that Mick Gordon was just done soo dirty man :( (srsly ID PAY MICK!). well, at least Hugo the creative director of this game seems chill ig. Hopefully he also doesn't happen to be much of a scum bag like marty is. But who knows honestly. It really sucks how Mick didn't get the time to properly cook with the OST. He would've made it so far into making the OST for TDA's had things just not gone so south for him. It sucks how we aren't in that timeline. But all we can hope for is that the new composer for the soundtrack does a good enough job. But damn does the dark ages look good. At the very least there are still passionate devs working hard to deliver a solid DOOM game. So, maybe it's not all smoke and mirrors bts this time around. Hopefully. How do you guys personally feel? 1 Share this post Link to post
Idontevenknow Posted September 8 No, what happened to Mick was terrible, but it won’t stop me from buying TDA. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cadaverized Posted September 8 (edited) I really don't care about the music at all as long as it's not some techno or hiphop bullshit. More creepy ambient stuff would be cool. Like dead space. I don't play Doom games for the music. It's cool they added some kinda death metal and hardcore elements but I am actually part of that scene and hear it all the time 0 Share this post Link to post
Wad overdose Posted September 8 (edited) Gosh when will they realized that the game is not to blame along with the whole Bethesda and Id Software, I understand them perfectly well but mostly it was Straton was is didn't pay to Mick and acted like an asshole. I hope there won't be the same drama with the new composer. Edited September 8 by Wad overdose 1 Share this post Link to post

Hopefully he at least learned a thing or two after all this. Snakes still be within ID Software. Edited September 8 by Consistent-Money-990 : Grammatical error 2 Share this post Link to post
ClassOf94 Posted September 16 (edited) What happened between Marty and Mick should not overshadow the incredible vision, creativity and hard work of hundreds of talented people that has gone into making the new Doom franchise the modern masterpiece it is. This dispute has no bearing on my impressions or propensity to purchase Doom TDA at all (though I do secretly wish they'd all somehow bury the hatchet and get Mick to do the soundtrack for this one also). I've read both sides of the story from Mick and Marty, and the sense I got is they probably had a frayed relationship from before the whole Eternal OST debacle even happened (to quote Mick's post on medium: "Tensions between id Software and me had been undeniably building from the beginning and only worsened as the cycle of demanding music, avoiding approvals and withholding pay continued"). Notwithstanding what happened behind the scenes, I think both Mick and Marty are responsible for choosing to publicly escalate things the way they did which scuttled any chance of an amicable resolution. After the poor reception to the OST, predictably, nobody wanted to own this failure. As the saying goes, success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. It was Mick who first posted on twitter in April essentially disowning it, which Marty probably viewed as a public attack on him, prompting him to also go public on reddit in May blaming Mick for 'project uncertainty and risk' (an overreaction to say the least). IMHO, both the tweet and reddit post should never have happened. Because going public on twitter/reddit in these matters has the unfortunate side effect of attracting the absolute worst element of the toxic video gaming community, and that toxicity just further complicates things by fueling the mental anguish and frustration of all involved. Which I think is exactly what happened. Probably an unpopular opinion but I believe the fans shouldn't pass sweeping judgments on Marty for this debacle. There are always variables, aspects and internal dynamics which we, as outside observers, are unaware of. What most folks don't realize is there is also a massive third party in this dispute i.e. Bethesda, which as per Mick's own admission was a big reason for the delay in starting the OST's production. It was Bethesda's previous unauthorized release of an OST Mick had worked on with a different studio (not id software) which prompted him to hold off on working on Eternal's OST until he had a formal contract in place. Marty claims Mick had 4 months to produce it based on the understand they had in Jan, whereas Mick says he didn't want to start work on it without a formal contract (due to his past experience of getting shafted by Bethesda) - and I'm pretty sure both have emails and proof backing up their claims. The whole thing feels like a massive breakdown in communications, and you get a sense of that from Mick when he writes "I am isolated from the development team, living and working in a country on the other side of the planet". Marty certainly deserves his share of the blame, but I think it's too easy for that blame to devolve into crucifying him as some kind of corporate stooge. While I do criticize Marty for mishandling the whole issue, I also know that he has played an important role in the modern doom revival as well. Criticism where it's due, but without minimizing a person's accomplishments is how I personally approach it. Edited September 16 by ClassOf94 5 Share this post Link to post
Doom-X-Machina Posted September 16 I'll still play The Dark Ages. But nobody will make a cent from me doing it. They could've done the right thing and fired him and all would be sweet, but no... arrogance won the day. And I don't fund or support egregious arrogance. 2 Share this post Link to post
Autistic_doomer Posted September 17 It absolutely does bother me and if it wasn’t for the other people that have worked hard on the game, I wouldn’t be paying for it. The reality of course is that 99.9% of people won’t care a stuff about any of this 0 Share this post Link to post
GibFrag Posted September 17 (edited) I honestly don't give a damn. People come and go and have drama this and that in the gaming industry since the beginning. Either put up or shut up is how I see it. If it bothers someone soooooo much, then don't buy the game and put your money where your mouth is. Just whining pay mick boo hoo goo goo ga ga isn't going to resolve anything, and it's old news at this point anyways. Just think of all the people here who would shit themselves if they found out what all went on at Id and definitely 3D Realms during the 90s (hell, what's going on with 3D Realms NOW). The horror! 0 Share this post Link to post
ASON-Z- Posted September 19 While I wish they'd fire that snake, he does not in any shape or form represent all of the development team. Every big-name studio or company have their own equivalent. They always do. I still enjoy the new games without second thought, and I look forward to TDA. 2 Share this post Link to post

I just don't understand why things happened the way they did between Mick and ID. It really should've not happened, but it did. It's a part of Doom that we won't likely see ever again (including that eternal OST release on Spotify). Things were so perfect, yet someone HAD to screw it up. 1 Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted September 21 (edited) Dismissing the hard work of an entire team because of a perceived issue with one dude is just fucking dumb. I agree with people saying there was likely failures on both sides. 7 Share this post Link to post
Man of Doom Posted September 30 At this point, it is extremely unlikely that any kind of resolution or closure can be expected. And unfortunately, that’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes. Considering the amount of intricacies involved in an OST release and what went down that we may never know of, it’s best at this point to let sleeping dogs lie. In the end, dismissing the work on nuDoom (be it 2016, Eternal, or The Dark Ages) as “this was always dogshit” is emotionally and intellectually dishonest (not to mention just really dumb). I mean, Mick even explicitly told people not to start harassing current/former id Software employees over this entire debacle. And yet, that hasn’t stopped people from leaving angry comments on the official YouTube release of Andrew Hulshult’s IDKFA. 4 Share this post Link to post
LuciferSam86 Posted September 30 Nah man, who cares? I found plain stupid 2 things in this useless drama: Dismissing an awesome job from the nu-Doom team Vandalizing Doomwiki page about Stratton 1 Share this post Link to post
