NaNoWADMo 2024 - The month-long mapping challenge!

Recommended Posts

sounds cool... deadline work, imo, produces the best results.

Just confused about the "rules" you said no rules.. but if this supposed to be collected in a megawad of some kind? Do we need to all use the same map format? what about if we want custom textures or something?

Or is each map, supposed to be loaded on its own, completely separate to the other maps?

I think we all kinda just make our own megaWAD of speedmaps. Or, in some cases, team up with a bud?

I might see if I can do this. Could do with being a little less precious about my output.

If it's something in the vein of NaNoWriMo, then it isn't a community pack or anything like that, it's more an individual thing people encourage each other to get something done, period. Collaboration is welcome though and if there's an idea for a community map pack with it's own rules, that can be an excellent goal for the challenge in it's own right.

Define your own goal, as long as you're mapping. Just like it's not about what you're writing for NaNoWriMo, it's about actually writing. A call to action as it were.

It's a personal challenge accepted for the sake of it, but with no actual commitment involved outside of one's own pride.

I'm in for trying to get at least a few maps out. I wouldn't call myself quite up to it in mapping skills to do a fully planned out megawad, but maybe something an episode in length, 9-10 maps. Good chance to get out of any creative blocks when there's a little pressure.

@Zerofuchs is correct. There is no single NaNoWADMo end product, no release that collects everyone's work. Whatever you create, you're free to release that at the end of the month, continue working on it, or keep it to yourself.

A call to action is a good way of putting it.

Minor self plug (slightly sorry but only slightly) - if anyone wants a fairly low commitment community project with a focus on small, quick, easy to develop maps I've set up a thread here.

Since this is after all a NaNoWadMo inspired pack it'll be officially kicking off from 1 October but if you want to chip in to a rookie project as your challenge for the month, I will certainly welcome your interest and it's better to gather mappers a bit before kicking off methinks :P

I'd like to participate.

I was thinking about it a few years ago, but I kinda forgot, and/or misread the date.

Are there any complevel/source port/IWAD limitations or rules in place?

No, there are only the rules you set for yourself.

count me in. I had a behemoth of a map that's still in the oven for almost a year. hopefully it will finish this october, so that I can, work on the other, two maps that are about as large if not bigger...

I'll have another go at this. Third time's charm -- maybe this time I'll actually manage to finish something for once, heh.

oh yeah, we've already been getting into mapping recently and the train hasn't slowed down at all, but this'll definitely help out and probably be a lot of fun too, so sign us up,

Just compiled the resources I'll be using for my project, and I collected several unfinished maps and scraps laying around my hard drive for potentially getting reworked for this. Haven't done any actual mapping yet of course. Can't wait to start working on it for real!

I'm having a really hard time resisting the urge to start mapping for my project early, and I'm thinking it'll be more productive if I make use of the mapping energy I have right now instead of waiting another 6 days to start on it... My goal has been to finish 18 maps during October, so I think I'll still do that and not count anything I might finish before then towards those 18 maps, as a compromise. :P (I'm planning for this wad to have 27 maps when it's done, but I don't plan on finishing the entire thing during nanowadmo)

That's up to you. I've always encouraged going by your own timezone just to make things easy. It's not a big deal if we have rolling starts and ends.

I'd like to sign up! I'm going to do the initial few maps of a TNT: Evilution WAD. I might release a demo with the finished maps made for the event afterwards.

Hi!

I will join this years NaNoWADmo to un-prototype as many prototype maps I've got in the pocket
On the to-do list:

* Make Tapestry of Stones ready id-games
* Make Meatblock ready for id-games
These 2 should take not that much time

* Make In The Dark (RAMP2024's prootype version) a full map
* Make the Alien Lair Prototype (Birmindoom 2023) a full map
* "Untitled project" - a piece of collab map that needs to be completed, I can do this as a standalone map for NaNoWADMo for playtesting purposes

Almost vacation time so I should have more time to complete something this year. Also not as drained as last year so it should be a more poductive NaNoWADmo this year.

I would like to announce my entry into NaNoWADMo 2024. My buddy and I started a game design studio and I wanted to create a short set of levels to serve as a proof of concept for our design principles.

Project Lowlife

A series of Ultimate Doom maps in -cl21 each themed around one of Ultimate Doom's eight weapons, with a secret level that'll just be good ol macroslaughter with a complete arsenal.

Goal is to have all maps done in a release candidate by the end of October, and I'll take November to polish them up for a full release to coincide with Doom's 31st anniversary.

These kind of goal-setting, intention announcement project things are great for mutual accountability. Excited to see what everyone does!
