Does playing through in Coop count as cheating?

Does playing through in Coop count as cheating?

  1. 1. Would you count it if I told you I beat Doom 1 on Zandronum? (I'm asking for YOUR opinion)

    • Yes, coop has always been included in Doom and you deserve bragging rights.

    • No, Zandronum lets you respawn without penalties and has other benefits and you don't deserve bragging rights.

I recently beat Doom (e1 through e4) with a friend of mine who has never played the game on difficulty 3. We used Zandronum, which obviously isn't very vanilla and has things like no respawn penalties and freelook as well as others. Do you guys think I should be able to say I beat Doom 1 fair? I wanna know your guys opinion, not "Idk whatever you want".

No, but not because co-op is somehow "cheating". The simple fact is that you didn't beat Doom 1, you both did. To be completely fair and sportsmanlike, you have to acknowledge that every co-op game is a team effort, no matter how small your teammate's contribution.

This post makes my brain hurt. Why do people think about and stress about stuff like this? Games are supposed to be fun.

No, you did not cheat. You played through with a friend, a feature provided by your port of choice. Did you have fun? If yes, well done, you accomplished the purpose of playing games.

But, as @Foxpup said, you haven't completed it yourself. If you feel like it, go back and try it. The co-op run would have been good practice. But it 100% wasn't cheating and absolutely ludicrous to think so. This is up there in the stupid stakes with the people who say Ultra-Violence is the only way to play Doom and quicksaves are cheating.

And no one deserves any kind of "bragging rights" with anything to do with gaming, ever. No amount of accomplishment with playing is worthy of any kind of bragging. It is a silly pastime, nothing more.

I wouldn't say so.

If you tweak a lot of the gameplay options, like ammo, number of extra lives, respawning items, etc. It can make things easier, or more challenging depending on what you change, but I wouldn't consider it cheating. You change what makes it more fun for you and friends.

I'd recommend you try out some other WADs built with co-op in mind eventually. I feel like the original iWADs had things just kinda thrown in as an afterthought, but many community-made WADs put noticeable effort into cooperative play. Co-op is one of my favorite things about DOOM.

I would also beat DOOM in single player just to make shure I can handle the game on my own.  I think it is cheating if there is more then 5 people in the same game (ZDaemon online) it just becomes too easy.  But two people.. nope.  Not cheating.

I just looked it up.. 100 people can be in one game in ZDaemon.  So I now believe 50 players doing co-op is cheating.  Man that’s a lot, wonder how it’s like with 100.

Playing one of the built in game modes is.. cheating?

Nah. Play as thou wilt. The options are there to be used.

Heck some maps use mp-only tags to add a UV+ mode. So it's not like it only swings the difficulty one way.

There are a few co-op only maps out there but don't ask me what they are.

This is actually a pretty perfect answer. I can totally see saying “I beat Minecraft” vs “I beat Minecraft with my friend”. Exactly what I’m looking for

Yeah that’s just kinda what’s on my mind when I say “I beat doom”. I just feel like it would be so wrong to say that when there was another person to do twice the damage. Also not really bragging rights I guess, more of just being able to say “I beat it” when I get asked about it cause it has happened before.

If its with a friend i'd say not, but if its with a group of like, 5 people, I would think so.

But eh, who cares. The more friends the merrier!

100 Seems quite a lot.. would you reconsider??  I just checked on google the maximum players on ZDaemon per game.  I don’t think there is a room with 100 players doing co-op anyway, but I’m shure that’s a little cheating.

Beating it single player is beating it single player, and beating it in co-op is beating it in co-op. It's two different game modes. Playing a different game mode is not cheating. They both "count," but one does not count as the other.

If you say "I beat Doom on UV" and you intentionally leave out that it was co-op, knowing people will assume you did it single player, that's deceptive. Not because you cheated at the game (you didn't) or because co-op "doesn't count" but because it's a different accomplishment than what you'd be letting people assume.

FWIW, in Doom II, I think Icon of Sin is actually much harder in co-op mode.

Nobody is going to check. John Romero isn't going to show up and your house and punch your girlfriend in the boobs because you two beat Icon of Sin together.

Play Doom the way you want to play it.

Perfect, thats actually what I was thinking just now on our doom 2 playthrough.

I'd call that a nightmare+ difficulty level myself lol...
I'd rather grind through a hundred God Machines than herd 100 metaphorical cats:

No. You're not allowed to say that you've beaten Doom unless you have UV-Maxed every level on Nightmare.

Ah crap. That's a little hard for me. Instead, is it okay if I UV-Max it on Hurt Me Plenty?

Only if you do it Tyson and Pacifist simultaneously.

I changed my mind, as long as you are having fun thats what matters.  I mean going through all the levels.. how about the secret ones??  You still finished the game.

I only played co-up once and that was when I wasn't even playing DOOM as much as I am now.  That was many years ago, it did feel like I was cheating because I was mostly in the back watching everyone do all the work.  I mostly solo and it feels like a better experience.  All the content for me.

I never played on Zandronum, but I played on Zdaemon.  I voted Yes... it does count.
