environment mapping

It's for mapping a texture on a surface where the texture coordinates are view-dependant. Spherical environment mapping makes things look shiny, which is what ZDoomGL uses (using the env.jpg image).

Aah, so that's why the water and poison looked so much cooler after I put the env.jpg in the right folder?

No, the water and nukage looks cooler due to the animation blending :) The environment mapping is only used on mirrors right now, so you'll have to grab a wad that uses mirrors.
