What is the best free webspace provider?

What is the best free webspace provider?

I only need html (no DB/cgi support) and ftp access would be preferred.
What I don't want is geocities or similar which only allow some tiny amount of daily transfers... but I'm not too choosy.
It is not that I am not willing to pay, but paid hosting is always a tricky business -- bandwidth size and download charges are 2 of the unforeseen issues that can be deadly.

Can you help? thanks.

Well, Opulent, if you have Roadrunner Cable, they let you host your own server as long as it doesn't gobble up too much bandwith (like, a lot = 30+ gigs) a month.

I have Cox.net, they don't allow any server applications to be running.(no ftp, filesharing, etc..)
of course, I *could* just do it anyway, but I rotate which machine is connected to the internet, so that isn't a very good solution for me anyway.
thanks, though, that was a good suggestion. :)

Not necessarily bad? The only thing worse than Geocities is AOL (but not by much).

Really? Wait, what do you mean by no ftp?

no ftp server running on my pc.
I can USE port 21/23... it is against the user agreement(that means they can sue you) if you run a server on your box that others connect to.
like all things, if you just run a temporary webserver overnight or something so people can see your CS stats or something, they won't bother you; but if your Britney-porn ftp is hitting GB transfers a day, they will be knocking on your door. (Cox's lawyers, not Britney :)

edit: Geocities is something like 2 MB transfers per day or something unbelievably small. for html-only, that would be fine; for files that is not worth the bother.

Actually, I think AOL doesn't run out of bandwidth every time more than 3 people visit your page in a day. I've never seen an AOL members site shut down for excessive bandwidth usage.

Yes, but AOL is the spam and lamer capital of all the internet.

Try Crosswinds. Decent enough, but there will be some ads or popups every time people visit your site. I don't know of any daily transfer limit.

EDIT: Shit. They had a free service a year or two ago. Doesn't look like it anymore.

Erm... I used to use Tripod. When I still updated my crap-ass site, that is. They weren't bad, 'cept they decreased their space allowance to 20MB somewhere along the line...

thanks mmnpsrsoskl, that looks great.
IE only, 40 Mb max, only 100MB/month, and you can only upload 1 file at a time :(
but what do you want for nothing?! :)
thanks.

freewebs.com

Not bad, 100MB I think, about 500MB transfer a month, and you only have to have a link back to the freewebs site.

Yeah, except every file I upload to them gets corrupted after a week.

Well, you can request that you get 100MB, and for the first week you only have 100MB bandwidth...but otherwise it's a pretty damned good provider.

Corrupted? Damn that sucks Dan. Just go throw a bunch of sporks at them :P

I still use tripod for my lame personal site. Quick and safe, and not too annoying.
