Increasing your frame-rate

Recommended Posts

Could this be a sticky thread for tips/suggestions on increasing the frame-rate in ZGL? It might be easier to have something like this on hand than to look through the recent threads for all the tips timmie has mentioned, and it could eliminate the need for some people to ask the same questions over and over again.

So... post only tips for increasing frame-rate in ZGL, please. Have it it.

Heh, ok then.

One way to increase speed on old CPUs (where the fonts cause slowdown) is to disable ingame messages by setting "show_messages" to 0 in the console.

Run in fullscreen mode (fullscreen 1)
Run in 16 bit color (gl_vid_bitdepth 16)
Disable stencil buffer (gl_vid_stencilbits 0)
Use 16 bit textures (gl_texture_format GL_RGB5_A1)
Disable hires textures (gl_texture_usehires 0)
Run at a lower resolution?

I'm running a pretty duff old system, but most original Doom/Doom2 levels (and quite a few more complex .wads) run fine on 1024*768 - How do I acheive my frame rates? Latest NVidia drivers and tweaks. Switch off VSync as well, it's not much use. With ZDoomGL, I've not seen very much of the 'screen tearing' that apparently happens if it's switched off.
