SG/SSG from Doom 2 were hardly interesting or original weapons.

The Wolfenstein flamethrower is awesome, especially in multiplayer. When playing the Beach map, the enemy will steal the documents and on there way up ill be waiting on top of the stairs. Then i burn'em all, it's one of the best weapons EVER.

The "Egon gun" from Half-Life, the Venom Gun from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the Flak Cannon from Unreal Tournament and Unreal (not UT2k3!), the sniper rifle from Halo.

*EDIT* Oh, and the BFG10k from Q2 wasn't shabby either, as well as the Q1 super nailgun. I was also fond of Q1's lightning gun.

Pure Originality? I would go with The Shrink Ray in Duke Nukem 3D. It was probably the most fun I ever had killing people.

My favorite weapons are already mentioned. The shrinkgun from Duke Nukem, the nuke RL from Shadow Warrior, the redeemer from UT and the flamethrower from RTCW.

Amazing as it may seem, up until that time no form of shotgun had ever appeared in an FPS (afaik anyway), so yes they were original :)

I believe that Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom are the only games the BFG 9000 has appeared in, although other BFG models (e.g. the 10k) have appeared in other games.


Anyway, they aren't really FPS' (well, if you change the 'S' to mean 'Sneaker' rather than 'Shooter' they are ;)), but for sheer originality nearly all the arrow types (fire, water, rope/vine, gas, etc) from the Thief series are damned cool :)

Another highly original "weapon" that I really like is the tricorder in Elite Force 2, which in one of the later SP missions lets you call down orbital phaser and quantum torpedo strikes ;)

Redeemer is probably my favorite. But I'm amazed no one has mentioned the Chest Burster from some of the Turok games. Nothing like seeing a giant worm shoot out of someones chest ;)

A fantastically useful multi-purpose weapon. You could pretty much complete the whole of Xen using just the hive hand. In fact, that is my only grumble: it made that part of the game too easy.

I like the plasma rifle and the pistol from Doom, and the shotgun from Medal of Honor Frontline. I LOVE just running up to people and shotgunning them at point blank range and then "I JUST SHOTGUNNED YOU IN THE HEAD LA LA LA LA AHAHhahaHAHAhaAHaHAhaAHHhahaHAH."

And then after a few more shots a reload and do it again ahahahHAhaAHahahAHAhahHAHAHAHAkhaHaHa.

That Raven Staff was only good when powered up. Otherwise, it wasn't useful at all, especially from far away.
