Doom? Controversial?

Recommended Posts

That's right. Apparently PC Gamer has somehow chosen, out of 9 other games in the top 10, that Doom is the most controversial. Read it and see if you agree with this:

Dubbed a "mass-murder simulator" by critics like Lt. Col. David Grossman, DOOM is still being touted as Public Enemy No. 1 by concerned citizens a full 10 years after its release. The quintessential "violent game," it has seemingly been blamed for everything from school shootings to bedwetting, and everything in-between.

Should the media find a new scapegoat to blame violent behavior on?

fp!

Well, it does feature violence... and everyone's favorite, demon worship.

That offends both the weak AND the religious. With the addition of porn wads and impse, it can now offend femenists as well.

I'm surprised Blood didn't make the list. That is pretty much the only game I'd hesitate to show to a four-year-old in case it screwed their head up.

Yeah, and I have horrible vision, that's Doom's fault too.

dude in ten years everyones still going to be talking about grand theft auto like it was controversial, the public at large doesnt catch on to these things very quickly.

well they got that one right =P after doom it's hard to get much more controversial. until murder / child rape / terrorism simulators start coming out. and yes, they will.

EDIT: actually a hitman game could be sweet. you have to commit murders without leaving any evidence, and if you finally get caught have to evade the police =P that could be really fun and suspenseful and use a lot of brainpower.

If anything, they will just blame DooM 3 when it comes out.

There already is a hitman game, it's called - suprise! - Hitman. There's a Hitman 2 as well.

Postal 2 seemed to be more or less social satire, much like South Park. Usually shocking but there's always some message on how completely fucked up we let things get.

yeah, it was more funny than anything :) part of the funny coming from the fact some people actually get shocked by this stuff.

hmmm I don't think PC Gamer were doing their research well enough. Mortal Kombat anyone? If that wasn't a game slammed for it's graphic violence I don't know what is.

I agree, the whole article seemed a bit rushed.

Wonder how many parents walked in on the bunny-stick scene.

God, Doom is so tame by today's standards, I don't see how anyone even cares anymore. Sure, it has blood everywhere, demonic imagery, etc., but the thing is, you, as the player, were fighting against it. Heck, in Mortal Kombat, the player was causing the carnage (especially with those ever-lovely fatalities). Geez, man, Postal 2, Blood, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and that car driving game where you ran over people for points were all worse than Doom in my opinion.

Yeah, I don't see why Grand Theft Auto isn't on the list. Wasn't there also a sim a few years back where you had to organise football hoolliganism ?

And why the hell is Everquest on there? PC Gamer themselves say it's more addictive than violent.

heh i never thought of grand theft auto as controversial at all after everything else =P and anyway this is for PC GAMER not CONSOLE GAMER. everquest DEFINITELY doesn't belong on that list though.

you obviously haven't played something like postal 2 then. i never really even thought of blood as a terribly violent game. probably just because i naturally distinguish games from reality =P

mark my words though, SimTerrorist, SimRapist, and SimRapist 2: Catholic Style will top this list in a few years.

Because it's been the direct cause of several people committing suicide.

People = dumb fucks

What? Why I said that? Ooh because it's fun!

Oh and because dumb fucks that claim preposterous things like my fave game being responsible for sick fucks shooting their classmates make me want some kind of revenge, so when I say 'people', I naturally refer to those morons.

I think there should be a ban on electronic music, due to it's direct cause of drug use amongst teenagers and uhh.. rap music cause it turns our kids into gun toting pinkos with ideas of their own.

Mmmm, that's new to me. Do you have any references, by any chance? I'd like to read more about this; right away, it sounds a bit like the Judas Priest trial to me.

Thanks.

Here's another one, I vote we stop books! Those menaces to society encourage sitting down for long periods of time! Of course, I'd get laughed out of any building with "concerned citizens" for saying that. Although some books have some pretty descriptive scenes, and they have to, because as it's purely words, they have to give you enough information to imagine the scene yourself. They can get pretty immersive if you ask me. The real problem however, Is of course, the people who aren't familiar with a new concept, and in order to spite it, exaggerate the worst and ignore the good. They quite often quote doom as the source of the problems with games, most likely because it was revolutionary at the time, and it did feature alot of gore and imagery of torture/pain and suffering, but they ignored the fact that you were the hero trying to FIGHT the evil NOT be the evil. All they needed to see was a human, albeit a freaky looking one, being gunned down in the first level in order to condem it.

It's sad now that they still pick on doom, Doom still has it's atmosphere, but it looks cartoony and downright ugly on most machines now (Ignoring ports).

*nods* It's just like people condemning Wolfenstein 3D as a nazi game...
