But yeah, don't be so hateful towards music. Its the greatest thing created by man. True, most rap/hip-hop isn't really worth listening to but really neither is metal, and hate is a very strong word.

i used to not like rap back during middle school and 9th grade. recently, however, ive listened to it more and its actually quite a fun genre. 50 cent, eminem, lil john and the eastside boyz and whoever else there is have some pretty awesome songs to listen to and "get krunk", if you will.

the lyrics for the songs that actually have a meaning, besides the ones that are just for fun's sake, are pretty deep and well written. and dont tell me it doesnt take talent to freestyle and rap, because you try spitting out the words as fast as they do. be you black or white it doesnt matter cuz it doesnt come easy. and SOMEBODY had to make the beats.

i dont know whether or not it takes more talent to make a metal song. sure you have to play an instrument and record it, but a lot goes into making a rap song as well. youve got ur synths and drum beats...and that pretty much covers it afaik hehe. i used to be pretty closed minded when it came to music, and i only liked metal and classic rock. hell i had the same view as you that rap was no talent shit but ive broadened my horizons and i now have respect for rappers. they arent a bunch of crackhead gangstas, theyre just doin their thing making their music the way they want to to get their viewpoints out there and be heard.

i like both metal and rap, but i lean towards metal more.

Yeah, because god know there's never been a no-talent metal band.

Has anyone ever told you that you're retarded?

I agree that most rappers are no-talent-low-lives. But that in itself is enough to say here, in order to avoid flaming, etc., because to each his own. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, and to pretty much get people arguing over it is something that shouldn't be done. People are passionate about certain things. Big fans of music are one of them. Its best not to raise tensions between the different groups.

Uh...of all the mainstream rappers you just mentioned, Eminem is the only one who even comes close to being deep/well written and having a meaning. Too bad he uses the same subject material over and over and over and over...

That said, I really love older rap, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash etc. There's also a lot of good underground hip-hop stuff floating around today.

Hip-hop > Metal

The only complaint I have against rap is that it's not usually energetic enough for my tastes. Of course there are exceptions such as Busta Rhymes and NWA.

I think this is a worthwhile discussion.

Both have important elements, hip hop culture has strongly influenced jazz today with such hybrid genres as acid jazz.

Metal has influenced pop music with pop/metal groups such as evanescence and linkin park.

Everyone has their own preferences but I would say both are valuable influences to what I listen to. My metal tastes lean more towards Slayer, Metallica, and other bands that have put hard work into their music and ended up with detailed music that is still simple enough to get stuck in your head.

As for hip hop, I dislike modern "popular" hip hop such as Ja Rule and Ashanti and 50-cent. This music is mainly sold based on its image although I will admit it has some decent elements. I prefer electro/jungle and 80's hip hop as well as the jazz/hip hop hybrid genres of today. Jamiroquai, Four 80 East, and Posu Yan are all favs of mine who are heavily influenced by hip hop.

But to answer your question, I would say I prefer metal. Modern hip hop doesn't quite appeal to me, although both genres you specified are very vague and cover a lot of types of music.

Are you talking about rap or hip hop? Because they're two quite different things.

I don't know about the others but Eminem is hip hop, not rap.

Uh, it seems quite clear that he's talking about music in general. And if you're not a "fanboy" (or girl ;) ) of any genre (i.e. you don't like any type of music at all), then there is something very, very wrong with you. Even insane (committed to an asylum insane, not just a bit weird) people tend to like some kinds of music :)

People who use the crap on MTV/the hit lists has a skewered view on Hip Hop.

There is tons of great hip-hop out there.

Takes talent. Yeah right, the 95% of metal bands out there that are pure shit sure as hell have a lot of "talent".

I like both. My leaning is towards rap. Sure people are right to say there is a lot of crap-rap out there, but there sure are some shitty metal bands too.

When rap is good, it can be very good. But some talentless dick rappin about how him and his homies are gonna "put a cap in yo' ass" or "hand out a beat down", simply because everyone else does, does not make a good record. A different rapper could say basically the same thing and make a great record with it though.

they're both nice. you can find some nifty underground hip hop shit if you try. it requires just as much talent as anything else. it's just harder to headbang to it. i do listen to metal more, though.

Truth be told I'm not a big fan of either. I'm more of a rock n roll/metal type of guy.
