beezee88 Posted September 24, 2003 Google- msn chat Microsoft once more, the nanny state strikes again! Because a few dirty little paedos use MSN to find kids, EVERYONE has to suffer now. I think it's only UK though, but it's still fucked up. It's not going to solve anything, as everyone will just go elsewhere, giving others strained bandwidth and Microsoft will probably lose out on some advertising revenue. Maybe they are doing it to protect themselves from any possible lawsuits, but I haven't heard of anyone sueing a chatroom, they have disclaimers and stuff (don't they?) 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted September 24, 2003 They're only removing the chatrooms though, you can still use the instant messaging functions. I don't see why this is such a big deal. 0 Share this post Link to post
beezee88 Posted September 24, 2003 yeah, the chatrooms don't affect me, but I know a few people who use 'em for fun mostly, it annoys them a bit. 0 Share this post Link to post
Reisal Posted September 24, 2003 I hate the people who come in, advertise or message you to see a porn site, and leave in MSN Chat 0 Share this post Link to post
zark Posted September 24, 2003 Is it really that important? Boo hoo, all the teenagers won't be able to go in their chatrooms anymore, sob sniff. 0 Share this post Link to post

Enjay Posted September 24, 2003 Letting your kid wander round the Internet unsupervised is like letting them walk around a red light district. On the Internet, a wrong click here, or an unexpected pop-up there can instantly put pr0n on screen, or put you in touch with some other "adult" themed product or service. Even if the service isn't necessarily "offensive", it could very well be inappropriate. And I'm sure we've all received unsolicited e-mails for herbal viagra, horny sluts wanting to do it with us, and offers to make our dicks so big we can use them as baseball bats, or had an adult themed ad or banner on an otherwise reasonably innocent site. It is unavoidable (as the Emperor said). The only place in RL where so much children-unfriendly material is available is in the so called "dodgy" parts of various towns and cities, and I certainly wouldn't let my kids wander round them alone. Yes, love it or hate it, much of the Internet is an incredibly accessible sleaze pit, Microsoft chat rooms or not. Again, it comes down to responsible parenting as much as anything else. 0 Share this post Link to post
auxois Posted September 24, 2003 Right on, Brotha Enjay. Speak the word my reverend. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jonathan Posted September 24, 2003 Oh come on. This has nothing to do with protecting children, that's just a nice way to spin the story to ignorant journalists. This is just about saving money as running millions of free chat room doesn't tend to generate much revenue. 0 Share this post Link to post
Psyonisis Posted September 24, 2003 Who cares? Chat rooms are for newbs. As long as I have the IM capabilities, I'm fine. 0 Share this post Link to post

The Flange Peddler Posted September 24, 2003 Jonathan said:This is just about saving money as running millions of free chat room doesn't tend to generate much revenue. I think you've head the nail on the head there. I read that in the USA, the MSN chatrooms aren't going to be stopped. Rather, it will become a subscription service. Why? Not for money oh no no. Rather because giving your credict card details ensures that people will have to use their honest identity, and ti stops kiddies from getting involved too. You see... they're looking after our own interests after all *KA CHING* Edit: Regarding 'chatrooms' and 'IRC'... From the way the media have reported this story I get the impression they have no idea about the distintion between these two things. 0 Share this post Link to post
læmænt Posted September 25, 2003 who cares? It's MSN if you ever used it in the first place, you deserve to suffer 0 Share this post Link to post

darknation Posted September 25, 2003 I'm sending my irclogs to the law in exchange for my own freedom before it's too late. You people are so fucked on about a million counts of every crime under the sun. 0 Share this post Link to post
pritch Posted September 25, 2003 this is a good thing. I can't believe you haven't realised at least 90% of those in these chatrooms are actually perverts, and only like 5% is itty bitty titty. Yeah I did get that phrase from Things to do in Denver when you're Dead. 0 Share this post Link to post

Sporku Posted September 29, 2003 HI IM A SEXY CHIC WANNA SEE MY WEBCAM??????? :) I'm glad as hell the chat rooms are shutting down. Now if only yahoo would shut thier chatrooms down, and AOL shut thier chatrooms down.. I have something against internet chatrooms (Not as many idiots use IRC) Not likely 0 Share this post Link to post
NiGHTMARE Posted September 29, 2003 Actually I believe it's only the 3rd party chatrooms that MSN are shutting down. The ones they run and monitor themselves will still be there. 0 Share this post Link to post
