GamePro Does Doom (3)

Recommended Posts

Over at Gamepro.com there's a new article about everyone's favorite game currently being developed by id Software. The article, to be frank, is kinda bland and doesn't cover much in terms of the engine or the actual game. However there's some info about what exactly they want the game to be and some info on the X-Box version as well. Thanks Shacknews.

No, Hollenshead says that that's when they're going to nail down minimum system requirements ... when they're a few weeks from being done.

"it kinda bland", eh Cyb? :-P

Regardless of that insignifigant typo, who cares what GamePro has to say? They're a joke of a magazine anyway.

Nope. Half-Life is based on a modified Quake engine. No developer (save for 3DRealms :P) will be dumb enough to license 2 engines for 1 game.

Nope. Half-Life took code from both Quakes. :P

valve licensed both quake and q2 sources, but hl was primarily built on the quake source. the only part of q2 they used, I believe, was the netcode

Where did you get that info from?

AFAIK, Half-Life was built on the Quake engine, licensed in 1996. Valve wanted to release the game at the end of 1997, as one of Quake 2's main competitors. But somehow, Valve decided that their game sucked and pushed it back to have almost everything redone, ALL BY THEMSELVES. Quake 2 didn't even come into the picture.

Here is a detailed walkthrough of the entire Half-Life development process: http://www.gamespot.com/features/halflife_final/index.html

As expected, Quake 2 isn't mentioned once. If you would, please verify where you got the information that Valve licensed the Quake 2 engine.

Ok... I stand corrected.

This is the full quote from Valve employee Ken Birdman:
"It is fundamentally just a heavily modified Quake 1 engine. There are about 50 lines of code from the Quake 2 engine, mostly bugs fixes to hard problems that Carmack found and fixed before we ran into them."

Another Valve employee, Jay Stelly adds,
"We also took PAS from QW and/or Q2 and a couple of other minor routines I can remember (no more than 100-200 lines of code there). There was some feature overlap (as Ken mentions) like game code DLLs and colored lighting, but we developed our own solutions to those independent of Q2."

That settles it. HL was based on 50% Quake code, 50% Valve's code, and 0.1% (probably less) Quake 2 code.
