Sephiroth Posted October 11, 2003 Has anyone else noticed porn popups on doomworld? i mean today i have seen like 5 different ones, 3 with nudity. stuff like ifriends, and adult friend finder. is doomworld gonna start asking me if i want gator soon? on a side note, a few years ago i clicked the "3ddownloads" link and was sent to porn. i went to somethingawful.com once and guess what, porn. hackage anyone? 0 Share this post Link to post
pritch Posted October 11, 2003 Customised Google toolbar: 447 popups blocked. I've never seen one, however, porn popups would be kind of awful here, given the policy operated on the forums. 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted October 11, 2003 pritch said:Customised Google toolbar: 447 popups blocked. Yup, Google toolbar is a good popup blocker (457 for me) and it's useful for other stuff too - like (tada) web searches. 0 Share this post Link to post
Draconio Posted October 11, 2003 <pimp> I use Mozilla and I never get any unwanted popups. </pimp> 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted October 11, 2003 On my computer at home, I have javascript disabled (for Great Justice), so I never see any of these pop-ups. On my recent travels, though, I accessed Doomworld from many different computers. It seemed that the content in the pop-ups varied from place to place. On some (which tended to be the better-run Internet cafes), the pop-ups were always just normal inoffensive messages about ordinary commercial products and services. Annoying, but not porn. At the more tatty places (perhaps where randy backpackers downloaded porn?!), the pop-ups were indeed of the "Enlarge yuor p3n1s!!" variety. To cut a long story short, I therefore believe that the content of these pop-ups depends somehow on what you have on your own machine. Anyway, it has been clarified before that Doomworld has no control over these pop-ups; maybe Telefragged also has no direct control over their content. 0 Share this post Link to post

No, because Doomworld does not have these kind of ads. You probably have installed some adware / spyware on your computer, which is now spamming you with these kind of ads whenever you are online. Get Ad-aware to get rid of it, and be carefull what you download next time. 0 Share this post Link to post

DooMBoy Posted October 11, 2003 Why are complaining about porn? Heh. I use Mozilla myself. 0 Share this post Link to post
sargebaldy Posted October 11, 2003 ugh, when will people stop whining about popups and just get any browser that isn't ie, since it seems to be the last one that still has popup support. 0 Share this post Link to post

Ultraviolet Posted October 11, 2003 Mordeth suggested Ad-Aware, a very respectable and useful program. However, there is another out there that you can't live without called "Spybot Search & Destroy." Between the two of them you will be able to find and destroy most of what is hijacking your machine. Spybot is important to have because rather than just delete all spyware, it replaces spyware modules that are integrated with other programs that you might frequently use with dummy modules, thus in some cases preventing the containing programs from being crippled. Last time I checked, Ad-Aware doesn't operate this way, even though it is still very good at what it does. AFAIK it only detects stand-alone spy/adware, but I don't have any way of knowing that. One may notice that no matter which of these they run first, whichever they run second will probably still detect problems that the other didn't catch. This is why it is vital to have both. 0 Share this post Link to post
Tobester Posted October 11, 2003 isnt ad-aware spyware in clever anti-spyware form? iirc I read that somewhere 0 Share this post Link to post
Ultraviolet Posted October 11, 2003 Tobester said:isnt ad-aware spyware in clever anti-spyware form? iirc I read that somewhere Eh? I think you heard wrong. It doesn't have its own startup entry, it doesn't leave any processes behind after you run it, it actually works... Seems fully trustworthy to me. Now, programs like "Evidence Eraser" and various clones of pop-up stoppers are spammed on pop-ups and ad-strips so much that that alone makes them seem like they're probably ad/spy/mal/hackware. EDIT: Lavasoft also has a well-designed website (usually not indicative of 1337-k1dd13z wanting to track your surfing habits), is a growing business, offers other software, and frequently updates their software. Hell, their site even has a support section. Who would go through all that trouble just to feed you ads and know what kind of porn you're looking at? 0 Share this post Link to post

I'm sure Ad-Aware works great on OpenBSD. I'm also quite sure there's tons of undtected spyware on your average OpenBSD system. 0 Share this post Link to post

pritch Posted October 13, 2003 It doesn't matter what browser you use, it's still a very good idea to have Spybot S&D on your system, and to keep it updated. I've just done my weekly rinse. 0 Share this post Link to post
Hirogen2 Posted October 13, 2003 Mozilla too, with 'open unwanted windows' JavaScript option turned off. And if there is some ads, then no porn so far. Only ad-over-all-place. I think Linux is safe against adstuff.exes. 0 Share this post Link to post
