This should be in General, but General doesn't have polls.

I showed Doom to someone I met here on campus, and he managed to point something interesting out to me. After you beat "O of Destruction" the level text says this:

"But then, Earth control beams down a message from space: Sensors have located the source of the alien invasion. If you go there, you may be able to block their entry. The alien base is at the heart of your very own home city, not far from the starport."

Which made me wonder... wait, aren't they hellspawn? My conclusion was that either A) id f'd up, or B) by "alien" they merely mean "not of the norm," which could still mean hellspawn.

Of course, I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks.

demons and cyberdemons.

I suppose they refer to it as the alien base because they don't really know that they are demons and just assume that they are aliens. Afterall, the hero (aka you) is supposebly the only one that went to hell and back, the only one who knows the truth.

I suppose the spiderdemon and arachnotron look like aliens but i suppose one can conclude that hell is a beast with many faces and has often been interpreted like this in many stories, comics etc without pushing it out of proportion. (eg i didn't think that violator from spawn was a demon when i first saw him but there you go).

Demons. Unless they're alien occultists. I don't understand why the stories about the games depicts them as aliens and yet subtly imply they're demons too. Either way, the evidence indicates that they're demonic.

They come from somewhere else, they look menacing and they want to kill you. That's all we know. And yeah, the description fits both categories well.

By the way, wrong forum.

Exactly. I voted option 3. I've noticed those texts as well, and I would say that they are "alien" in the sense that they are foreign to the location they're invading.

Some are demons but like the former humans some maybe, like, former aliens. I believe that makes sense. And that is also why there is so much technology in Hell. I'm sure other life forms made the same mistake UAC made.

Damned if I know. I always figured that the cybernetic creatures were demons who decided technology kicked ass and decided to modify themselves. Or something.

Demons, except for the possessed marines.

Hellspawn (minor demons):

Imps: A vast servant caste of hellspawn. They are aggressive and hateful, but possesses an internal sense of community preferring to band together in hordes. Though they are perhaps best known as the infantry of the hell horde they also serve as labor force in task where corrupted humans cannot be trusted. Imps are traditionally created by demon lords, but corrupted humans have also been known to spontaneously metamorphose into imps. They are barren themselves.

Demons: Another low caste of hellspawn, these lowly creatures serve little purpouse besides tormenting the damned and being used as cannon fodder. Though they are strong, they are much too dumb to do any task besides ripping things apart. Demons do as imps possess a simple pack mentality and prefers to hunt in groups. Demons are always hungry. Former humans have also been known spontaneously to morph into demons.

Lost souls: The remnants of a soul tormented in the hellfires. Lost Souls hate everything, including themselves. They exist for nothing else, but destruction and relentlessly rams into anything in hope of destroying themselves. Unlike other lower hellspawn the lords of Hell have no control over the lost souls, though they know how to summon them forth. Often they spontaneously rise from the fiery pits of Hell to cause havoc amongst their tormenters. Extermination squads of lesser hellspawn are then sent out to get rid of them. Being drafted to such a squad is a veiled death sentence.

Lesser demons:

Cacodemons: Large floating energy demons. Cacodemons are a proud lot and has high thoughts of themselves. They believe they are a kind of "hell's policemen" gifted with their floating powers in order to keep an eye on everything. Of course most other demons do not believe in these notions and many times cacodemon insurgencies have to be quelled. They do serve a role as minor overseers of imp task forces, however. Cacodemons are not harmed by radiation. In fact, they enjoy it and love to bask in places such as melted down nuclear reactors.

Hell knights: Hell knights are not a seperate species, but merely the young form of a Baron of Hell. In order to become a Baron of Hell they have to pass an almost endless row of rigors and tests designed to kill off all but the vilest and toughest of them. During the second demon invasion someone got the smart idea of letting a part of their tests be a kind of "military service". They are used in situations that require something powerful yet "expendable". Hell knights a physiologically similar to barons, though they are less tough and lack the barons' mystical powers.

Revenants: A type of vengeful spirits animated in hell by their lust for revenge. They appear as enlarged skeletons. Revenants first achieved military importance with the invention of the magical revenant battlegear. This enchanted armor vest channels the revenant's spite into small explosive meteors. The revenants' grim determination sometimes even allows them to guide these missiles towards their targets. Revenants are used as elite shock troops.

Mancubi: Not really a demon but "merely" a grotesquely mutated former human. They are only able to move their obese bodies because they are partially powered by the nuclear device grafted on their back. The nuclear device also powers the twin plasma reaction firestorm launchers that replaces their arms. Their dense flesh makes them ungodly tough. Mancubi are believed to be the ultimate advance of the biological engineering project that have also brought us the former human commando. Rumor has it that this project was based on research on biologically augmented soldiers done by the UAC before the demon invasions.

Pain elementals: Pain elementals are not real demons. In fact they are little but an animated shell carrying a patch of lost soul containing hellfire. They were made as a means to use the unpredictable lost souls in battle in a more controllable fashion. Pain elementals can spit forth these lost souls and if they are destroyed some of their contents will be released as they rupture. Why pain elementals are made to look as cacodemons is unknown, though it is probably as punishment for a past transgression. Though they despise them cacodemons are often forced to act as escort for these creatures.

Arachnotrons: Contrary to common belief these creatures are not larval specimens of the masterminds. They were created by the masterminds to use in field operations that requires a mastermind-style intellect on a smaller scale. The actual demon is only the "brain", but without their cybernetically controlled plasma gun toting spider carriages they would be both immobile and defenseless. The first batch of arachnotrons are rumored to be made by the masterminds out of the carcass of one of their brethren, murdered for the occasion.

Greater demons:

Barons of Hell: These demon nobles are responsible for the temptation and corruption of mortals. Though hideous in physical appearance these creatures possesses a powerful personality and mystical powers that sometimes are even able to pierce the boundary of reality and affect weak-willed humans. By their mere presence Barons of Hell can corrupt their surroundings making, for example, electronic systems go haywire. That a duo of them managed to corrupt the entire Phobos base bears witness of their awesome powers. Barons of Hell also represents corruption on the physical level. They have no real internal organs, but are instead filled with a vile substance made of such things as pus, acid, flegm, poison, feces and radioactive waste. Their hands are porous and the vile fluid constantly drips from them.

Arch Viles: These are demons, and purpotedly even former mortals, that have sacrificed their vitality for awesome magical powers in an unholy ritual that, among things, requires ripping out most of one's internal organs. They now exist in a warped neither dead nor alive state. Their most feared power is their ability to raise from the dead all, but the mighty demon lords. Somehow they are not able to use this power on their own kind, however. Another favourite trick is to summon forth pillars of white hot hellfire.

Demon lords:

Cyberdemons: Though they for many have come to represent the quintessential demon they are a very new phenomenon. The first prototype cyberdemon were constructed on the lost moon of Deimos where demonkind for the first time had direct access to human technology. Their powers thus both come from the demonic realm as well as from eons of human expertise in the field of warfare. The prototype were given life by the sacrifice of four high ranking Barons of Hell though subsequent incarnations have been invigorated by other kinds of sacrifices. The sole purpose of the cyberdemons is the invasion of the realm of men.

Masterminds: These massive disgusting demon lords are responsible for the, well, masterminding of Hell and tending the intellectual needs of demonkind. Originally, probably in order to keep them in check, they were born without any means of movement and defense. Thus they were helpless by themselves, but invaluable due to their excellent leadership. Imported human cybernetic technology allowed the construction of the armed robotic spider carriages that all masterminds now use. Initially only the rogue mastermind responsible knew of it, but it later spread allowing the minority of mastermind who supported the invasions to gain supremacy.

There was a page I saw once that made an attempt to explain all the species, how they came to be (including the cybernetic ones), how they live and act... it was pretty cool. Much like yours.

Heh, the game refers to them as demons, so therefore they must be demons. :P

Only demons are demons, the rest are spectres, cyberdemons, imps, mancubi, etc.

And they are aliens, see, cause they come from some other place (Hell, actually.) You could say the former humans aren't totally alien, though they are possessed by an alien force.

Yes, technically, they are aliens to the planet earth, but in the most fundamental sense --

they are demons.

they are that which the man fears the most. monstrous aberrations, nightmares, evil spirits. demons, yes.

I reckon demons too, the "electronic" ones being demons which have stolen human cybernetic technology. Also on that webpage, and what i belive, is that the spider mastermind and arachnotron may have been aquatic creatures beforehand..not that you'd expect to find oceans (of water, anyway) in hell XD. It is however possible that aliens at the same technology level of humans (at the time of the first doom) could have also accidentally tapped into the hell realm. For instance the wad "Icarus" seems to be set on an alien planet whose population was completley killed off by the monsters, and the sequel (formerly doom 2000, now some word i cant spell) is set upon one of that civilisations starships, which the demons have also took over.

Other: Humans.
other than that, Demons.

What is typical for a demon? What is typical for an alien?
For the latter usually that it has a lot of bio waste (i.e.found in UT as weapons) inside their body.
Aliens come from space, demons come from hell.
The latter is the case.
Then consider how they look and check that too.
