Russell_P Posted November 16, 2003 There's a hell of alot of potential candidates for this list. Maybe it should be devided into catagories and run over a number of weeks. 0 Share this post Link to post

That's a good idea, you can make a category for "best megawad", "best deathmatch level", "best level", "best zdoom level", or things like that. And then host an award show, which will be shown in hundreds of tv-channels in the world and where all the awards will be given, with nominees and all things like that. The award could be a golden DoomGuy. 0 Share this post Link to post
CacodemonLeader Posted November 16, 2003 Void, Fragport, License to Spell Doom, Massmouth 2, and of course the Torment & Torture series to name a few. 0 Share this post Link to post
Amaster Posted November 16, 2003 In regards to the Doom64 TC, I think it should be included. However, the original authors should recieve credit, and the TC team should be an honorable mention. I also think cyberdreams should be on the list. 0 Share this post Link to post
Aardappel Posted November 16, 2003 I LOVE seeing good "best ever" lists, as they allow me to spot wads I may have missed. But if you are going to do this, do this right, meaning something that is most valuable to the readers / most statistically accurate. My suggestion: collect best-ever lists from as many people as possible. Give points to items in each list similar to formula-1 rules, i.e. #1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 6, then 4, 3, 2, 1, and every item from there on 1 point. Add up. This point scheme, besides being statistically relatively fair, also allows the lists to contain any number of items, as most items on longer lists only get 1 point anyway. You can safely assume that people that come up with a list of 50 wads actually know a bit better than those who send in a list of 5, but there's no big advantage either way. The bitch is adding it all up. I have a little C program which I wrote for a different occasion and does all the adding automatically (and tracks who voted what etc.), but still assumes everyone uses the same naming convention for a wad, which often goes wrong. Either way, good luck. Can't wait to see the results. 0 Share this post Link to post

Aardappel Posted November 16, 2003 Oh and if you are going to ignore my suggestion, or if you need some wads to put in a pre-selected list (good to get around the "name" problem), here are some wads I enjoyed playing a lot (by their .wad name), all getting 9 or better on my own little ranking list (in no particular order): 10sector, nightwing, bfl, self-ep, kzdoom*, slayer, ruinbros, equinox, av, hr, hr2, earth, requiem, eternal, mordeth, ahellday 0 Share this post Link to post

The awards show format could work, that way things like single maps and vanilla maps won't be disadvantaged against their multi-map/source port counterparts. Something like this might work: Best single map Best multi-map wad (2-6 maps) Best episode (7-15 maps) Best megawad (anything bigger) and then have single-player, deathmatch, limitless (general port), Boom, ZDoom, JDoom and Legacy categories for each one. (hang on, this is getting too complicated...) On the other hand of course, it might be easier to keep things simple...(like a Top 50 or 100 wads, including all types) 0 Share this post Link to post
Naked Snake Posted November 16, 2003 It'd also be interesting to review some of the best of the best demos ever recorded, in all catergories. 0 Share this post Link to post
Aardappel Posted November 16, 2003 awards format would suck ass, as you will never see the more interesting entries further down the list (it will have little statistical value). Assuming a single list for all kinds of SP wads, I am sure I have already played numbers 1-20, whichever they are. So such a list is only relevant to me (and most hardcore doomers, I think) if it has 50-100 entries, and for that many entries to be statistically valid, you need many votes, weighted votes, and not diluting the results by splitting things up into 10 million categories. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted November 16, 2003 BBG said: It'd also be interesting to review some of the best of the best demos ever recorded, in all catergories. Yeah, I don't know why this is only about wads. Might as well make categories representing all sorts of DOOM related activities (such as wads, engines, demos, editing tools, and miscellaneous.) But anyway, the 10th is already less than a month away... I'd say requesting a list per category per person would be the best way to go. The list length could accordingly vary per category (25 wads, 5 engines, 5 tools, 10 demos, 5 miscellaneous, for instance) and people would vote on whatever lists they want (potentially all of them.) 0 Share this post Link to post
insertwackynamehere Posted November 16, 2003 If you win, you could have a line in every wad text file that said "Creator of a a wad that won the 10th Anniversary Doomworld Doom wad contest!" 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted November 17, 2003 BBG said:It'd also be interesting to review some of the best of the best demos ever recorded, in all catergories. I've been meaning to start a "favourite demos" thread in the Demos Forum for a while now. I've now done so. Apart from a few obvious "automatic" selections, it's damned hard to choose though. Regarding best wads, I don't think it is a good idea to try to bring in some sophisticated democratic voting system at this stage. It makes most sense if people just post their favourites here, and then whoever is/are going to write the feature takes those suggestions into consideration. Er, and yes, I'll post my favourites soon. 0 Share this post Link to post
sargebaldy Posted November 17, 2003 I have to say I prefer Aardappel's idea. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted November 17, 2003 How about a critic’s choice, where reviewer could nominate or so wads each, or something... 0 Share this post Link to post
sargebaldy Posted November 17, 2003 I like the idea of having a 'best architecture', 'best lighting', 'best use of port features', 'best music' and maybe even a 'best jokewad'. then maybe a 'best doom 1 map set', 'best doom 2 map set', 'best doom1 standalone map', 'best doom 2 standalone map', 'best TC', 'best PC', 'best weapons mod', 'best use of dehacked', 'best coop wad', and 'best dm map' etc etc etc. It seems like it'd be more interesting than just writing up reviews of all the popular maps we've all already played. 0 Share this post Link to post
Scuba Steve Posted November 17, 2003 ravage said: Golden Hissy Award I need one of those. I doubt many would go for it... but I always felt that we always hear about the best levels, but rarely about best texture set new monster or any artwork for that matter. Granted, reasong being as there are like 2/30 ratio on graphics and levels for doom. But I always felt that Great work by people like Fredrik and Espi never seem to get as much attention, despite being able to provide almost as much immersion as levels can. A real idea I had though, was to bring back Doomworld Events. I always really liked reading questions answered by the people who released a wad, and it was also an added morale boost. Yes, we have Newstuff, but it doesn't cover huge releases like it should. IF nothing else, I like Ling's Idea. A good comprehensive "Best of" would do the trick. 0 Share this post Link to post
The Ultimate DooMer Posted November 17, 2003 Scuba Steve said:Yes, we have Newstuff, but it doesn't cover huge releases like it should. They don't really need to cover big releases in a special way, as these wads have their own news threads upon release as well, which is where most of the comments will end up. IMO just the normal review (which will be pretty long and have quite a few screenies anyway) is good enough there. 0 Share this post Link to post

Draconio Posted November 17, 2003 I'm know I'm missing some from these lists, and not all of these are necessarily "best ever" material, but here are some wads I enjoyed (I'll add more if I remember them): I enjoyed the following single player wads for Doom 1: apoch*.wad series (apoch1.wad to apoch5.wad) at.wad (For Boom compatible ports) crusades.wad end1.wad pe4m_all.wad ritesmit.wad I enjoyed the following single player wads for Doom 2: av.wad biowar.wad blakgate.wad foa*.wad series (For Boom compatible ports, I think maybe I didn't play all of these, but I recall the ones I did play were pretty good) helrzor.wad killalla.wad n4-evil.wad rebirth.wad scythe.wad Kurt Kesler's maps. Can't believe I nearly forgot them. (probably many others I've forgotten...) My favourite deathmatch wads on ZDaemon (Doom 2 wads): brit11.wad exec.wad fetaldm7.wad 0 Share this post Link to post
