WHY are you STILL playing Doom?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have to admit that I'm not STILL playing Doom, because I only recently dicovered it. But, I love it even more than most modern games for one reason: It's fun.

Most modern games seek to "scare" the player, make him think it's real. One of the best parts of Doom is just how unrealistic it is; it almost adds a sort of slapstick humor to the game. The enemies are well-designed, well-balanced, and well-used.

It doesn't have to rely on its story to be engrossing. While I do love a good story here and there (Deus Ex FTW), I can't stand it when a game has one single, static, unchanging storyline (with the one exception of the Half-Life series), and then relies on it (one of the reasons I find the Halo series to be horribly overrated).

Doom is a game with an amazing amount of depth. I admit that while it was being developed, id intended for it to be a fairly simple game; best said by John Carmack: "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." However, that simplicity allows one to sort of create his own version of the game; what the game means to him, whether it be highly tactical approaches to dealing with enemies, simply shooting whilst screaming inane phrases, or simply putting in his own storyline details (like, maybe why the marine wasn't turned into a zombie like the rest of his comrades).

So, with all this in mind, I will again quote Carmack:

"Focused, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it. If you aren't sure which way to do something, do it both ways and see which works better."

That's why I play Doom.

I don't think I've ever watched the dialogue in between the sex scenes of porn movies once in my entire life. Never, are they good actors at all? Because I have no clue, lol.

Saying "still" doesn't much work for me.
As of: 2005, I began to play DOOM. How I got into such and old School game is too long of a story.

It's gameplay is like nothing else. Kill, Kill, Get BFG9000, reload, chainsaw, kill. It's not much more fun than that.

The fact that it's been ported to everything has helped a whole lot, and the easy of Doom editing is always a must. Compare me to a most anyone here, and I suck, but I don't care about that, I DM anyway.. WHY? Becaue it's more fun than most other computer games. Not that I don't Quake 2&3 every once in a while, but you can't do the same things with Q3 as with DOOM...

Also, because of the community, it's fun for me to just read about DOOM, browse around the source code.

IN the end, DOOM ROCKS!!!!

I play it for the almost artistic levels people make.

Me too, though I like enormous monsterfest maps as well.

I must admit I haven't played in quite a few month, playing too many other games, but I always have my wads to fall back on, and I like that :)

Doom is my most faithful old friend, and the best game of all time.

I play the occasional game of zdaemon, but I don't play doom singleplayer anymore. I used to still have enough interest to download the occasional newstuff wad, or play the latest wacky zdoom creation, but even that urge seems to have dissipated now. My map for Crucified Dreams is likely the last thing I will ever make in a doom editor.

I still read doomworld and post on the forums occasionally because I've made friends through this community, and it's become a part of my life. After almost ten years, checking Doomworld has become a reflex that I perform whenever I go online. While the site exists, I doubt I'll ever stop.

Here's a video of Doom2 (Nightmare level).....The guy used 33 minutes to pass all of the stages....WHAT a Wonderful Doomguy....!!!! He never died in the video.

Yet, Doom is one of my favourite games....It's also my only game that I play it forever without linkage break. (from 1995 until now)....The objective of the game is very simple that we just go, kill and pass....No other considerations needed. Later FPS games (Except Serious Sam and CS) have more than objectives to do. For example, you have to decode something, rescure the hostages. SOmetimes killing enemies can cause mission failure. However, Doomguy death is only the failure of Doom...Everyone can pass all the stages if you keep Doomguy alive.

Weapons, Monsters and Items were well balanced and designed... I like BFG, Double Shotgun and Plasma gun. Such weapons are powerful that kill large quanity of monsters at the same time in one shot.I like all monsters, especially Arch-Vile, Hell Knight, Monstermind and Cyberdemon....Their specific attack methods impress me. Items were reasonably designed....Invisibility can decrease the accuracy from monsters' attack. One of the spheres can make me undefeatable (IDDQD), this's helpful for attacking cyberdemon.

Sound and music are exotic, unforgettable and exciting. I have some MP3 form of Doom 1 2 and 3 music. If my mood is good or bad, I listen to them. Sound is explosive....From monsters' yelling voice, gun shot sound and the sound of Doomguy..This's one of the reasons that I love Doom very much.

The HUD of Doomguy can increase the atmosphere of DOom.He has much bleeding on his face when his health is from 0% to 59%.Sound realistic. I like the face of Doomguy whose health is 0%, (dead)....Because he looks like sleeping with blood....Lol...the style of his hair is changed

I will play Doom if I have time

I have invested too much of my free time already, discovering everything I can about this stupid game. If I stop now, what will have been the point? I don't have much to show for all that time except a couple of shitty levels, a handful of half-arsed demos and a depressing number of bugs introduced into recent prboom releases. I vividly remember the day when I first realised I was getting obsessed - I should have deleted my doom directory, right there and then.

Why not? Why would it be any less fun today than it was 13 years ago?

Because certain jackasses people believe that better graphics make for a better game nowadays.

I started doom on the playstation version.. 95? i think? well anyway. i played it through the first time and i was like wow.so i played it again and again and sooner or later i was hooked on it. so then later i got the pc version and noticed how much better it is than the psx version. I played and beaten every doom around since then.(except doom RPG for the cell phone, that was horrible)
and now i just joined zdaemon about half a year ago, if that long. and i have to get used to how people play on there. i played keyboard when i played normal single player but now i have learned hhow to play with mouse and my playing performance has increased.

the main reason i play Doom still is because its fun

Why do I still play Doom? Well, honestly, it's just fun. I originally picked it up in `93. I had to shrink the screen down to the size of a postage stamp to get a decent framerate, but who cared, it was incredible! When I've got just a little time to kill, I can always check the Newstuff here and grab something good to do for 30 minutes or so. I've got a friend of 21 years that still likes to get together with me on occasion for the 16 hour all-nighter of coop. Mainlining coffee and chain smoking. Got that three-inch ash about to melt into the filter because the cyberdemon's just around the corner and you can't risk moving your hand off the mouse to flick it. I guess that's why I play.

The two video games that actually had an impact on me as an artist, writer, hobbyist game designer, and as a person in general were Doom and Myst; funny thought since, apart from simplistic gameplay, they're polar opposites. And this isn't a Myst forum, so I won't even go into that, anyway.

I was initially not going to bother with Doom in 1993 for a number of reasons which, now that it's 2007, I can't remember. But I eventually got so bored and starved for something new that I went ahead and got it. The story in the manual scared the shit out of me. When I actually started playing, it got worse. The odd, freaky creatures and the bizarre dreamscape world I had to run around in with all its surreal architecture and sounds made me feel like I could revisit my worst childhood nightmares and explore them any time I felt like it. I blew days on the damn thing, I was so into it.

Why do I STILL play, though? There's really no reasons left to post; I mean, this thread covered all the reasons to play this game four pages ago. But I, personally, can't keep away from it because of the community. I've uninstalled Doom about a half dozen times, and every time it finds itself right back on there because of sites like Doomworld. The fact that I can download new levels and mods whenever I want gives Doom omniscient replay value.

When the internet loses interest in Doom, mine will probably go with it. So, until then...

The nostalgia value.. I feel like going back to 1994-1995.. *misty eyes*

AND because it's simply such an amazing and enterntaining game. No other game i've played has an atmosphere that even comes close to that in the original DOOM games. The music, the graphics and the sound effects, they are just so perfect in every way. The technical quality of the graphics and sfx isn't important to me, in these new games everything is just boring piles of polygons.. the monsters in DOOM have got something they don't, they've got SOUL.. i'm sure you all know what I mean.

We never seem to run out of maps. And these days the maps tend to be far better than the "normal" map of a few years ago. I guess it is mostly the better players/mappers left to carry on the tradition.

Granted there are always a few "try my first map" entries but by and large even many first maps are better than the "first maps" from yester-year.

Is there any other game that we purchased for 10 to 20 dollars, years ago, that we still play. Not many. Hexen, Heretic and not much else.

I got started on the Doom community because my last 3 computers were crap and I had no choice but to make the most out of them.

Today, however, my reason is different.

I will NEVER rest or put this game away until I HAVE FINISHED MY PROJECT AND COMPLETED MY GOAL WITH IT.

My goal with it? You'll hopefully be able to see that when the first episode is out. And oh yeah, I still play Doom because people are still releasing quality content for it that is worth playing for pure gameplay's sake.

I like to play Doom over and over (of course this is for the old Dooms), is I like to find all of the hidden easter eggs and secrets. I also like to play it because of the fact of what I call "stacking on friendly fire". Basically, its the way if the monsters shoot at you and ones in front of it, it shoots the one infront, which in turn creates ferocity in the one shot at, and it turns itself around and fires at the shooter. That said, I like to see what and how many monsters can I get fighting each other, I then sit back and watch in amusement. That is all I can say about it, other than they are kickass.

Whenever i play a new fps game i always end up comparing it to doom. And in every case, nothing tops it. Sure, there are games that look a hell of a lot better but gameplay is the key. I can still remember the first time i played doom (at my best friends house) and it still consumes me. At that time, there really wasn't anything cooler out there and there still really isn't.

Doom, for the win!
