NM history

Recommended Posts

hello guys,

Maybe I'll create a thread about that, I am looking for doom2/doom1/tnt/plutonia nightmare demos recorded with vanilla EXEs.

My idea is to create a site about nm history, who did each maps for the 1st time and such.

So I'll collecting demos from very hard maps (map22, map29, e4m6, e4m1, e1m3, e1m9 and some others), movies and also Half-DS(S) demopacks (when someone does all maps from scratch).
I got demos and packs like this from the Compet-N, AdamH, Radek and myself. I can probably reconstitute Anthe's HD2S, Panter's and Henning's from the Compet-N archive.

Thanx for reading,

Vince

I'm sure you know to look in http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/lmps/. The compet-n archive there contains some older stuff not available at ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/pub/compet-n/.

You'll find a few early NM runs in The DOOM Hall of Fame. This was on the Doom Collector's Edition CD, and didn't appear to be available anywhere online any more, so I zipped and uploaded it to my own webspace. Includes cute things like a demo proving to the sceptics that E1M1 is possible on Nightmare. :)

I've made this a new thread, since it clearly doesn't have anything to do with Icarus.

I did the NM 1st ever lists for doom1 and doom2 about 2 years ago.
And I used the lmp archive... including DHT and old Compet-N.

Now Ill try to collect the hard maps and try to know who did them :)

Well, good luck with the site. It's a pity the idgames lmp folder has had so many lmps deleted from it - all the 1.2, 1.666 demos got erased at some point, and there was the period when no new lmps were being accepted - basically almost all of the 1994 stuff is gone. But at least things are clearer for Doom 2. And in any case, there's no answer to the question Who did e1m1 on nightmare first? Anyone could have.

(Incidentally, does anyone know of an early Doom CD that archives this stuff? Seems like all the collections focused on wads only.)

Grazza listed the main sources. There was Frank Siebers doom page which had some rare nm runs (not many first-ever runs, though, if I remember rightly). I sent a copy of the page to Kristian Ronge, don't know if he's done anything with it or not.

I've also got a v1.2 demo of Steffen Winterfeldt beating e1m3 on nightmare the DHT3 Grand Master way (eg, killing every monster). Think it was recorded in June 1994. And I'm almost certain it was slowmotion cheated, but it's still a bit of demo history.

OUCH! An agressive spam-filter probably deleted your mail.. or moved it to a folder I don't usually check for non-spam. :-(

I'd be most grateful if you'd re-send that e-mail.. I missed it! Thanks.

I can contribute a NM First list myself, even if it's only for verification.

Adam > ny help would be greatly appreciated :-)

About Siebers Nightmare website, I have a copy of the whole site on my computer in France. Some cool demos there.

- you said several old demos got erased from the archive ?
- do you have any ideas on who could still have them on HD or CD ?
- I have your D2S and 13NS, could send me your doom eps NM and NM100S ? and also all your HDS/S demo packs ?

Thx xit, I'll pick the demos I need.

Anybody who did any NM maps considered as hard are welcome to send them to me. Any movies are welcome too, even incomplete. As long as it is recorded with vanilla doom.

AdamH : do you have a proggie to detect if prboom has been used ? Especially Budko's prboom.. that uses GF50. I ask that mainly because prboom allows slow motion.

LMPC will do the trick. In standard prboom there are GF49 tics in place of GF50, and with Budko's "strafe-50 always on", you get tics like GF50 SR50 TRx.

Still, do you really think there are people who try to cheat nowadays (i.e. use TAS methods and try to pretend they didn't)?

Well, at some point the idgames archive had v1.2 demos, then v1.666, and these were eventually erased when the final version, 1.9, came out. (You can tell this from the naming hierarchy we're left with). So a number of demos got lost this way, such as an early recording of n1m5, and no doubt some other stuff (this is just me reconstructing things based on some browsing of 1994 Google Groups.)

I don't know if they still exist anywhere or not. Maybe the original site maintainer at ocf.unt.edu, or at infant2.sphs.indiana.edu. Doubt Ty would have anything. And don't know of any CDs preserving these files either.

I don't think I ever did a 13ns. Someone must have, but it wasn't me... Sent the other stuff though.

Well I must have been dreaming then :)
I thought somebody got past Doom2 ep1 in nm100s, then I did ep2 and ep3 separately and finally Henning did the whole thing for the 1st time.
Ill check the archive tonight.

No, I did the first episode (2332ns01), and that's the only D2 nm100s movie I've ever recorded.

Obviously the easy/popular maps are hard to verify, but they are of little importance anyway.
