Am I the only one who's sick to death of that dialler trying to install itself when viewing the main Doomworld pages? Is it me or are UGO just going too far.

Profit > Service

It comes to something when a popup stopper is as important as a virus killer nowadays. Anyway, I sound like an old man moaning so I'm going to shut up.

So they get paid to stick a virus in one of the popups? Or is it just a case of the virus coming with the popup and the people who made that popup won't get rid of it?

What does that dialler thing do anyway?

It's just like an analog internet connection, only to their servers, on their lines, so through their bank accounts. Only they serve nothing but their own pages and stuff.

Diallers connect to a site that charges you for the time your logged on.

...if you use dialup...

Don't visit the main page. :P

That would be good advice except for the fact that this dialler doesn't just appear from the main page. Many times when I've used direct links to pages withtin http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/ this dialler popup has appeared. It's getting to the point where doomworld is un-navigateable.

I don't get that but then again: I browse with all IE options disabled and with some domains blocked. Can you tell me exactly which dialer tries to install itself, and which ad triggers this? Also, can anyone else verify this?

We did get similar complaints before (about pr0n pop-ups etc) but in those cases it turned out that those visitors were already infected with a redirecting trojan prior to visiting DW. Make sure that isn't the case with you by running a virus scan and a scan with Adaware / Spybot.

I've just got it - Dialer.6.G, coming from the 'Best SMS logos, pictures and more' ad. (popped up on the idgames search page).

There's a dialer in the ads?! Jesus Christ. Why haven't we moved off TF again?

Because no one wants to pay.

Because we're a bunch of poor, homeless Doomers.

Yeah anyway, Firebird <3.

The problem stems from the fact that on one pc, mozilla works fine (it's my browser of choice) but on my other, the freebie proxy I use just hates anything but ie.

I can't seem to get it to pop up anymore, but 'Best SMS logos, pictures and more' is the one. It's especially annoying because it tries to install three times before redirecting you to an .exe download when you eventually get to close the window.

What gets me about dialers is has there ever been anyone cretinous enough to actually want to use one? Or are these things designed specifically to take advantage of the supertard? I mean, even if you want porn there are 1000 better ways of doing it.

Fucking dialers, fuck off. I hope the people that make them get sex pest calls all day.

I don't think you realise how much bandwidth this website eats up.

There's been a lot of news over here about Diallers. The people who get caught out are those who aren't 100% confident about using the web and are still using dialup. They automatically click "yes" and it installs itself, and the next time they go online they start paying £1.50 a minute rather than their usual rate. They only realise once they get the phone bill. A lot of diallers will allow access to porn, but also allow you to surf the web like any other ISP just so that these people don't notice something's happened. The porn access really just makes them look like they provide a service, rather than just rip people off.

First off, none of the staff wants this shit. It's bad enough that we need to cope with those pop-under ads. Serving dialers, trojans or spyware via ads is definately out of the question.

However none of the admins, including myself, have actually seen this dialer popping up (despite repeated refreshs). But judging from this thread more than a few visitors seem to be confronted with it. We will contact Telefragged about this matter and see what's up.

If it's anything like the one I got whilst browsing a different UGO site, it's region specific. Only people from certain countries get it.

Heh, those flash ads also stop pages in /idgames from loading, if the flash appears then finishes playing the connction stops sending data and you have nothing but a grey page. I have a virus scanned called AVG which says there is a virus whenever that popup appears, but it also means you only have to click "no" once rather than 3 times, which is handy

I don't think anyone blames the Doomworld staff, but it's better you hear about it as you've probably got a much higher chance of getting the powers that be to do something about it. Let's face it, they must get tonnes of mail from regular Joe Bloggs types like myself whining about stuff. :P

Answer: Three extra characters is all you need to get to the forums without pop-ups, (but you should still get the software)...

/vb

Presto or something.
