Yeah, I noticed that later. It seems like an anomaly though, it's not even the most detailed area in the demonstration. Disorder Posted May 11, 2004 Looks wonderful! I like that easy gibbing. Makes it feel like Doom. Did anyone notice the marine hanging from the ceiling (YES!) and the creepy messages on the walls? Oh, and the spawning effect at 1:54 looks amazing! 0 Share this post Link to post

cloud4me Posted May 11, 2004 - atmosphere superb! - did you guys notice some weapons(shotgun and machinegun) have two different shoot mode? - the gibbing effect reminds me of original doom very much. - I'm a little bit worrying about chiangun. the sound of chaingun in Xbox trailer sounds a bit weak than machinegun. but the rest of weapon sounds very cool! 0 Share this post Link to post

Shaviro Posted May 11, 2004 Awesome! Notice how the revenant sounds exactly like in Doom2. 0 Share this post Link to post
Ubik Posted May 11, 2004 This makes me want the game more than ever (PC though). The Revenant teleporting in was especially nice. 0 Share this post Link to post
AirRaid Posted May 11, 2004 OMG. That will be all. Actually... I prefer the old Shotgun model. Looks meatier. The Gibbing - A couple of times you can see the flesh falling away from the skeletons of zombies - this looks awesome. Bah now i'm even more impatient. 0 Share this post Link to post
toxicfluff Posted May 11, 2004 The Doom3 mars base looks like one of the moodiest FPS settings I've seen. 0 Share this post Link to post

It's the way that illumination is used rather sparsely - there's almost more shadow than light. It seems you can see what you need to navigate - the floors and walls - but often where light isn't necessary, it isn't there. 0 Share this post Link to post
Skeletor Posted May 11, 2004 lol. My favorite monster the revanant looks the best! 0 Share this post Link to post
geekmarine Posted May 11, 2004 Wow, that was incredible. Really creeped me out, especially that bit with the flesh walls. I am personally happy to see that gibbing is definitely in. Man, that whole sequence with Doomguy walking around with the flashlight... Excellent. For a while, I was worried that the enemies would be too "buggish" to come off as hellspawn, but now with the new look at the atmosphere at the game, there's no question. 0 Share this post Link to post

dsm Posted May 11, 2004 Ok, I've recently seen the E3 2003 PC trailer and I just watched this one (yeah, I finally broke down and gave in to the temptation). Furthermore, in order to compare the 2003 trailer, I redownloaded the illegal video taken from a handheld camera during the E3 2002 demo about three days ago. Let's get the negatives out of the way first: 1. Sounds: I'm not sure really, but I am a bit disappointed with the chaingun's sound (this is kinda a double-problem as the sound suggests that the chaingun is rather slow-firing). I hope that the action was slowed down and that the final version's chaingun will sound faster (because when it sounds faster, it might sound beefier too). The shotgun, I've got mixed feelings about. I liked the 2003 shotgun sound better, because I felt it sounded like the classic Doom shotgun, but cooler. This new one, while arguably beefier sounding, sounds kinda generic and the pump-action reload sound sounds too pronounced (the Doom shotgun had a nice, subtle *chuck-chack* sound which imo was better) - beefier is not always better imo, which brings me on to the machinegun. I liked the 2003 machinegun sound, because, again, I felt it reminded me of the classic chaingun sound. Then again, the new machinegun sounds sounds cool too and very "machinegun-like". 2. While I'm pleased about the way enemies gib, I don't like that a mere shotgun blast seems capable of gibbing a possessed soldier - it's too much like Quake 2. I want enemies to be thrown back against the wall when I blast them with the shotgun - not splatter into bloody bones and gibs - reserve that for the heavy weapons - the chaingun, a direct rocket/grenade hit or a BFG blast. 3. I don't like the notion of alternate fire modes - to me, it creates confusion in the weapon balance (changing the guns into something different), but then, I noticed no alternate fire modes in this trailer (beats me why people think there's one), so I'll leave that one alone. 4. The Doomguy doesn't wear gloves - seems that's final. Tough shit. The good stuff: 1. Atmosphere seems even cooler than I imagined. I'm gonna love this game for the atmosphere alone. 2. I noticed several nods in the direction of classic Doom decor (the eyeless body hanging from the ceiling with his ripcage revealed) and while it probably means little in terms of gameplay, I can't help but feeling this giddy, joyous nostalgic sensation. The classic decor is back and better than ever before! 3. The pistol still has the cool sound (or one very similar to it) it had in the 2002 video and in the 2003 trailer - that's sweet as I can't wait to blast zombies with this puny, but cool weapon. 4. The "new" shotgun actually does look pretty cool when fired, practically nullifying the beef I had with it earlier, then of course the XBox model looks crappy with rather blurry and shitty texturing, but I expect the PC version to look awesome. Even the chaingun looks sweet despite still having that odd "thing" at its muzzle. Sadly, it doesn't show the "minigun-style handle" above the gun with the Doomguy's hand holding on to it, but I don't really think that's worth complaining about anyway. 5. Love the announcer voice - something I often phantazised about (and fervently hoping!) a new Id-released Doom game having; this was long before Doom 3 got announced as being in development. I never imagined that this simple little wish would come true given Id's standards in their other games. Overall a very exciting trailer, though I must admit: I like the 2003 trailer much better. The action sequences in the new trailer are too short and cut out, making it difficult to really take it in, but then, it's also one of the charms of it. It's nice that this trailer isn't burdened with a narrator voice that sounds like shit. Yes, I viewed both "versions" of the 2003 trailer - can't decide which narrator voice was the shittiest; the male voice was clichéed and had an exaggerated American pronounciation, but the female announcer's voice was just annoying in its monotony and lack of any narrating abilities. The graphics in the 2003 trailer are also sexier to look at, but that's just a minor thing anyway - I'm not complaining here, since I'll be getting the PC version of the game anyway. 0 Share this post Link to post

Szymanski Posted May 11, 2004 I really like how it's evolved since the last video from generic (and very clean)tech base to a real DOOM game. The bloody walls, swinging corpses and gibs really enhance the atmosphere. It just looks so good in full motion :) 0 Share this post Link to post

dsm Posted May 11, 2004 Funny, I don't recall Doom having blood-spattered walls as a specific trait, but maybe my memory fails me. I do, however, remember basins of blood (more like blood floor textures). But yeah, this trailer really feels doomy imo. The environments in this trailer makes me think of E2 of Doom 1 somehow. Notice that the second time the trailer shows the chaingun, the delay between frames seems to have been lowered as the gun seems to fire at a slower rate than it did earlier. Also, I've noticed several sound inconsistencies in regards to the shotgun (I already mentioned this in another thread); there are at least two occasions where the shotgun makes a "heavy" blast sound followed by a "heavy" reload sound - but, there are several occasions where it makes a "regular" blast sound (the same as in the 2003 trailer - *phew!*) but followed by the "heavy" reload sound instead of the regular reload sound. Also, I find it lame that the Revenant uses its old sounds - it doesn't really fit the creepy and "mature" atmosphere of Doom 3 and it's a step back compared to the awesome sounds it made in the 2003 trailer. I kinda believed those sounds were "dubbed" in. Don't ask me why they would do that. Oh but that gibbing looks badass - definitely on par with the old gib style of Doom 1 :-D This is a great day! 0 Share this post Link to post
cyber-menace Posted May 11, 2004 I just watched it myself, albeit I found it hard to grasp it on occasion. If I see one more trailer in the near future, I'll explode from impatience! If this is what the XBOX version is going to be like, I'll go absolutly mad to be the first one at my neighbourhood mall to get a copy of the PC version! But first I need something better than my current hunk of junk. 1000MHz 256MB RAM isn't going to cut it anymore. 0 Share this post Link to post

Of course Knee deep in the dead was deviod of gore but DOOM3 looks like a more compressed version. With the hanging bodies and gibbed corpses from the later episodes brought in to provide a more horror feel. 0 Share this post Link to post

Zoost Posted May 11, 2004 I just saw the trailer. And WOW! The atmosphere is realy tense. I like the corridor with all the blood and writing on the walls. I like the sounds. But i'm not so sure about the weapons, the shotgun and machinegun have a bit of cartoonisch feel. But overall it is really cool. 0 Share this post Link to post

That's why this trailer makes me think about E2 :-) Oh and I rarely play Doom 2 anymore ('cept mods made for Doom 2) - probably the reason I didn't recall any specific blood-spattered textures.I like the sounds. But i'm not so sure about the weapons, the shotgun and machinegun have a bit of cartoonisch feel. But overall it is really cool. That was my initial reaction too, but I'm gonna wait until I play the game on my own computer before I hand down the final judgement. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lectrix Posted May 11, 2004 I also noticed the hellknight can run... (oh crap, springs to mind) And this alternate fire issue, im not sure if they have alt fires (unless its an x-box only feature) But im hoping that it was actually the double barrel shotgun (unlikely though, shame), coz it does sound different when the pinkie demon is running at you. 0 Share this post Link to post

You are playing Doom 3 and walking down a long dark corridor, when suddenly you here something crash to the ground ahead of you and you hear the scream of a Ravenant reverberating down the corridor, followed by 2 or 3 more, and then more behind you, they screech as if bloodthirsty and all they want is you! You hear them approaching getting closer, so you pull out your SSG and get ready for hell. I think something like that with the old Ravenant sounds would scare the hell out of me. This is my opinion however. 0 Share this post Link to post
