Miscellaneous demos (part 1) [please post in part 3 instead]

I've moved the Icarus and Phml demos to threads specifically for those wads. It keeps things a bit neater of this thread is reserved for demos that don't fit in anywhere else.

If you intend to record a lot of demos on a wad, or you think it is obviously one that will engender a lot of recording interest from other people too, then feel free to start a new thread for it.

Here are demos for four more levels, continuing Maikl's idgames/ quest. You'll recognize the first level because I posted an FDA for it yesterday. Like I said, it's contained in an .ARJ file, so you can't find it unless you browse the FTP server. If you're wondering how to open an ARJ file, WinRAR is capable of doing so. With that said, enjoy!

DSTR-TGH.ZIP - Demos for DETHSTAR.WAD by Jackson Harvey

  • DSTR-047.LMP - UV speed in 0:47
  • DSTR-218.LMP - UV max in 2:18
DTRP1042.ZIP - UV max on DETHTRAP.WAD by Tony Donno in 10:42

DWLK-TGH.ZIP - Demos for DETHWALK.WAD by Bradley Hoza
  • DWLK-020.LMP - UV max in 0:20.89
  • DWLKa048.LMP - "Alternate route" UV max (no BFG) in 0:48.63
  • DWLK-003.LMP - UV speed/pacifist in 0:03.57
DEUM-540.ZIP - UV max on Escape from Planet Deum (DEUM.WAD) by Tony Priest in 5:40

Here are four more sets of demos for Michael Novikov's idgames/doom/d-f/ quest. I ignored HOUSE.WAD (in dhouse.zip) because ultimately, I didn't see much of a point in demoing a level with no monsters, items, or secrets, and whose exit you can reach in less than three seconds.

DEVL-TGH.ZIP - Demos for DEVIL.WAD by Eric Falsken

  • DEVL-032.LMP - UV speed in 0:32
  • DEVL-343.LMP - UV max in 3:43
DVIN-TGH.ZIP - Demos for The Devil Incarnate (DEVINC.WAD) by Dave Peacock
  • DVIN-026.LMP - UV speed in 0:26
  • DVIN-052.LMP - UV max in 0:52
DFLD-TGH.ZIP - Demos for Death Field (DFIELD.WAD) by Adam Holz
  • DFLD-008.LMP - UV speed in 0:08.49
  • DFLD-110.LMP - UV max in 1:10.23
DIAM-TGH.ZIP - Demos for DIAMOND1.WAD*, by an unknown author
  • DIAM-008.LMP - UV speed in 0:08
  • DIAM-038.LMP - UV max in 0:38
  • DIAMo002.LMP - UV -nomonsters in 0:02
* Only DIAMOND1.WAD was recorded on, as DIAMOND2.WAD is just the same level with larger pillars.

I also did improvements on two WADs that Michael previously recorded on. Because of their relationship to DEVIL.WAD, I did demos for both Annex Of Death, and the two-level WAD Kingdom of Death, which is... Annex Of Death and DEVIL.WAD, only with bad sound replacements. For the latter, I did what Michael did and recorded two-level demos.

ANNX-TGH.ZIP - Demos for Annex Of Death (ANNEX.WAD) by Ryan McGrail
  • ANNX-019.LMP - UV speed in 0:19
  • ANNX-040.LMP - UV max in 0:40
DETH-TGH.ZIP - UV movies for Kingdom of Death (DEATH.WAD) by Eric Falsken and Ryan McGrail
  • DETH-052.LMP - UV speed movie in 0:52
  • DETH-418.LMP - UV max movie in 4:18

Was trying to do a speed run of map 01 of "Baker's Dozen". however, I found that if you don't stop and kill many of the monsters, you will get overtaken after getting the red key. Anyone have some suggestions on how to get past hordes that try to block you in?

I just did a first demo attempt to see what the problem was (yeah, yeah, I know I'm the one who recommended you the maps, but I actually just skipped the first ones ten seconds in and played the later maps).

The imps did slow me down and I almost got killed, but it was mostly due to my ineptitude and lack of knowledge of the map. Just shoot them with the RL (and get the box I try and fail to grab) and you should be fine. Also, I missed the SSG secret at first, so I suspect it'd be much easier with it.

I believe that if you're interested in competitive speedrunning, it's best to use the recommended compatibility so everyone is on same grounds. ZDoom-based ports for Boom maps aren't right as there's lots of changes giving significant advantages to the player over good old Doom/Boom. Another disadvantage of using ZDoom-based ports is that it desyncs with every new version.

For Speed of Doom, you'd ideally want to use Boom, PrBoom or PrBoom+. Per the authors themselves, the recommended engine is PrBoom+ (complevel 9).

Of course, you're free to use whatever engine you choose, but be aware that the interest for speedrunning in ZDoom engines is close to nil. Outside of rocketjumping maps in ZDaemon and the occasional ZDoom-specific wad, not many demos are recorded for it.

In my opinion, it's also best to mention which category you're competing in, and the time. You might also want to use the attachment system provided by the forums, it's faster and more reliable than clunky filehosts for quick demo sharing.

Nice. You are fast for the first attempt. And this map was designed for First Demo Attempt Contest on iddqd ru :) Do not remember times, but you would win :)

Cool. Your reply inspired me to have another go at it, so I tried Map02.

I... wasn't so successfull this time. :)

3 deaths, 4th run finishes in 9:42 with 100% kills, 40% secrets. Total time is about 25 minutes.

okay, but I like the way Gzdoom runs better than prboom+. It feels a little faster, but I can try to use Prboom+ for future runs.

Since I haven't noticed anyone else doing it, I've made a run of Whispers of Satan level 7, demonstrating how to push a switch through a barrier, thus skipping a big chunk of the map. By doing this you can avoid having to kill any mancubuses or arachnotrons. You can also complete a no-monsters run this way, and since I'm a wimp, that's exactly what I did. See attachment for the underwhelming but mercifully short run.

Baker's Dozen
FDAs for Map03 to 06

Total times :
Map03 ~6:50
Map04 5:30
Map05 ~6:34
Map06 ~10:12

Also tried Map07, but... It's just too embarrassing to show. I didn't even manage to finish it, the cyberdemon always kills me. :)

(Speaking about Baker's Dozen FDAs)
The whole point of first demo attempts is to start recording without any previous knowledge of the map. ;)

Time was actually ~6:50, I was looking at the wrong text file.

Four UV Max demos for One Bloody Night by Erik Alm. I was initially aiming for a full demo pack, but then I said 'no'. Me + MAP07 (hordes of revenants) = fish out of water (as you can see). Plus, I would have to compete with stx-Vile on MAP09 and I'm mentally not ready for that yet...

I would love to see a speedrun of the last map in "One Bloody Night". That map is almost impossible to beat, and I personally still have yet to beat it.

OK, I'm gonna try to teach you how to fish here.

Go to http://doomedsda.us/
Click on the link corresponding to the first letter of the pwad's name. In this it's A-C (bldnight).
Scroll down the list until you come to bldnight and click on the link.
http://doomedsda.us/wad204.html
Search the table for the map and demo category that you are looking for. In this case there is one, and rather a good one too.

And there's no need to use things like mediafire. It is much more convenient to attach demos here. Please read the sticky threads in this forum.

Kristian: Nice! Regarding your comments on hn24: it was hn26 that I had spent some time attempting, not hn24. For some reason I've never recorded anything on that map - don't know why.

Anyone else think there should be a separate category on the sda for perfect runs?

I think all necessary categories are there

[complaint]
There is a notion here that the players claim they have "no skill". Sometimes they are such fine players it is close to ridiculous. But I'm fine with it (though I haven't heard Kimo Xvirus or Time of Death saying they have no skill).

Now we have the opposite: a forumer registered in 2010 who claims his recordings are perfect. For those who haven't bothered to download his newest Scythe 2 .lmp creation, you were right: it's a 2:00 UV Max. But I suspect this particular member wants attention and knows how to catch it.
[/complaint]

In addition to what Entryway said, some popular WADs such as Scythe 2 have separate threads.
