EDGE 1.28 Released

Recommended Posts

Andrew Baker has let us know of the release of EDGE 1.28, which comes after "a period of quiet activity," as he calls it. Bug fixes and stability were the priority in this version; here are some of the changes:

  • Very basic overlay HUD.
  • Removal of MP3 music support.
  • Full mouselook range in GL mode.
  • Better, faster sky drawing in GL mode.
  • The source code is now written in C++.
  • Many, many bug fixes (including several crash bugs).

I'll be honest I posted the last one to get off the "registered to just post once" message.

why is mp3 support removed?

Legal reasons, apparently. (See the EDGE forums at their SourceForge page for more details). Something to do with the epedemic of software patents.

Legal Shmeagle, no one who'd use or even know of Edge would care if the developers paid a license fee to "legally" add MP3 support.

Gives the Fraunhoeffer Institute lawyers the finger.

Ogg/Vorbis is still good and a superior format so support for it is highly anticipated.

OGG (Vorbis) format is planned, couldn't make it on this release.

MP3 was dropped because it's not open source and it conflicts with open source ideals (basically).

This is bad because as far as I know, Quake Doom uses MP3s :(

When OGG support is added, I'll most likely release a package of OGG encoded music. Not a big deal.

But for now, yeah, kinda sucks with no tunes.

Bugs:
If you crouch, you get stuck.
The hud in Icd-se.wad is now broken.

I'll report those to the EDGE developers.

Five words: Where's the linux version gone?

Linux binaries seem to work for some people (who have all the right libraries installed) and don't work for everyone else. We're looking into something more robust than that.

Where can you download Icd-se.wad ?
