Captain Red Posted June 23, 2004 Liam & Arioch: Yes, I agree that the NRA scenes in Bowling for Colobine were a bit below the belt. Moore dose have a habit of taking cheap shots. But the point of the film was that it was about American culture more then anything else, and he made a lot of very good points about it. Frankly, Moore could have spliced ‘Planets of the Apes’ footage of Heston running around with his rifle with security footage of the Colobine shootings, and it wouldn’t have made the statements about US culture any less valid. And as for those wacky conspiracies you accuse him of, I don't think you are meant to take them too seriously. It’s basically just Moore "thinking out loud" more then anything else. Edit: Damn. 0 Share this post Link to post
Grimm Posted June 23, 2004 Well then he shouldn't be fucking thinking out loud. 0 Share this post Link to post

Quast Posted June 24, 2004 Graf Zahl said:The NRA is a bunch of big time losers and doesn't deserve better. An organization that fights any kind of gun control is fundamentally evil. "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." Meaning, making something illegal/wrong doesn't prevent those with bad intent with obtaining/using said thing. If we couldn't legaly posses firearms, criminals still will...what do they care? 0 Share this post Link to post

Ralphis Posted June 26, 2004 I'd just like to point out that upon reading this thread in it's entirety, some of you who support the constitution: "OMG 1ST AMENDMENT" argue against the 2nd amendment in the same posts. fufufufufu 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted June 26, 2004 and? Edit: exactly where did anyone here say anything about gun control? 0 Share this post Link to post
Ralphis Posted June 26, 2004 Read back 2 pages Edit: The point is, everyone wants to act like the defender of the constitution, but really they're full of shit. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted June 26, 2004 First of all, we were talking about the NRA and not necessarily gun control; secondly, it is not un-constitution to SAY "lets ban all guns", though doing it is another matter. But you do make a point. People do tend to use the constitution as the be all and end all, but if you try had enough it can be changed. 0 Share this post Link to post

I think the 1st amendment is great and still applies today as it wasn't applied to the mindset at the time ('we should be able to criticise public officials without fear of getting our heads chopped off', it's an attempt to distance the US from the British system we had been under). The second amendment, now, tell me this isn't dated: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia... this amendment was established before we had any sort of armed forces to defend any uprising or invasions. All the people serving were regular folks, and when a nation is young like that there's a huge potential for uprisings and invasion (as you can plainly see by Iraq right now), so people really needed to be ready since the last line of defense was them. The original intents of the 2nd amendment have long passed and it really has no application in the world today. Personally I think it's a pretty stupid amendment to keep around and the only reason it does stay is because the NRA has a huge amount of influence in Washington. But in short, I disagree with the amendment, but I do support people's rights to own firearms because that right is stated in the constitution. 0 Share this post Link to post
