New Problem

My computer doesn't want to start, I'm actually quite surprised it's working long enough for me to write this. Basically, when I turn it on and log onto my username nothing responds. I can't click on any of my desktop icons, or the startmenu, I can't right-click on anything, nothing works. If I press alt+control+delete I can't even click on anything in the Task Manager. The only way I've found to get the computer to work in a stable way is to log onto a username, press the power button on the computer to initiate the shut-down process then switch users while it's shutting down. I've also scanned for virus' and nothing was found. I feel like taking a baseball bat to this damn thing.

There's a problem I dealt with for someone a while ago, it stops exe's working, you need a little prog called fix exe, i will find it...fixexeor try this

The file association of exe's can be corrupted by a virus. It reassociates it.

I'm guessing you're on XP from the way you describe "switching users"?

I'm not totally sure, but doing a repair Windows XP installation might work. It doesn't overwrite settings, just recopies the core files back over. To do it, reboot with the XP disc in the drive and boot from it. Then, DO NOT press R to get to the recovery console, but rather tell it you want to do an XP installation. When it asks you where you want to put XP (like, which hard drive and partition), you can hit R for Repair Installation. Just read the screens, you'll find it.

But, that may or may not work. Try it if you determin this isn't a virus.

Yeah, I'm using XP, though I'm not sure where the XP disk is, I'll have to wait until my grandfather gets home on sunday to see if he knows where the disk is, then I'll try it.

It sounds like a system hang, usually caused by bad or imroperly installed hardware or bad drivers. You need to look back at what was the last few things you did to your computer. Did you install outdated CD burner software? Did you just install a new memory chip? You'll have to troubleshoot to the last thing you did before it started to act like this.

i would do a repair. failing that, reinstall.

could be anything that is causeing the issue.

make a boot/virus scan disk on another computer and try to do that first.

have you tried safe mode?

honestly sounds like a virus/spyware combo. had a similar problem with my dad's computer.

i just ended up starting from scratch over spending hours fixing and checking crap that i wasnt getting paid for doing.

remember never google search with the phrase "free porn" as happened with my dad.

I haven't installed anything, it started acting like this at about 2 this morning. I just got home about ten minutes ago and it's acting the same. Usually when I can get the Task Manager to open something seems to be taking up the computers memory. CPU Usage will be 100%. Are there any really good virus scanners/deleters that are freeware?

I thought they were bloated beyond hope back when 7.0 pushed the 20MB barrier.

I wish version 3.0 still worked - everything you could possibly need from an online service, neatly packed into 2-3MB of RAM.

Although, ever since I installed 3DSmax 6, no program has truly shocked me with it's RAM usage.

Maybe Adaware and Spybot: S&D should be suggested along with a firewall, antivirus and preventitive spyware measures.

I already have Adaware, also, after I restarted my computer I was still having the problem, so I restarted it a couple more times, and when I could successfully get the Task Manager to open I started closing all these things that aren't usually in there and the computer seems to be working fine, so I'm going to try going after those things.

Run hijackthis then go to computer cops, read instructions and post the log of hijackthis, they will tell you what to remove.

Well, I just used the System Recovery disks that came with my computer and did a repair installation, it seems to have worked. I'll give it a couple days though. In the meantime, are there any freeware firewalls or anything of that nature?

xp pro sp2 firewall seems to be running fine, or get zone alarm
