The Underworld : Corrupted (Part I)

Recommended Posts

The transition from day to night was barely noticable in that hellish world. The only discernable change was the colour of the sky, gradually fading from an angry crimson to a dull brown. Within the vast crater, the expansive necropolis seemed to crawl as mobs of beasts scuttled between ramshackle buildings and crude factories. Faint screams could be heard echoing around the rock face; indeed, the job of converting humans into demonic servants seemed to be progressing well.
Three figures made their way down the crater wall, a slow and stealthy descent as they approached the citys outskirts. Glancing up, Kalliope noticed the distant, floating shapes that seemed to roam aimlessly through the red sky.
Hunting for prey.
"This is not wise," she muttered, scratching nervously at her close-cropped hair. "Even this far away, we are too vulnerable, too visible."
"Throw me some ideas, then" McMillan hissed back. "'cause I've not got much else".
Hendry glanced at the Colonel, then at Kalliope. "Why not impersonate zombies?" McMillan rolled his eyes. "Why not cover ourselves in blood and shit, stumble about and growl?"
McMillan looked Hendry up and down, amusement and pity vying for control over his face. "That's gotta be the most retarded idea I've ever heard."
Kalliope grinned. Hendry Shrugged.
"No, we're better off trying to get indoors. We'll work our way through the city going from building to building. That'll be the easy part." He nodded up towards the gleaming marble fortress at the citys core. "We're gonna have to break into that place, and I can guarantee we'll be caught in the act."
"You make it sound suicidal", Kalliope muttered.
"We should have been dead a dozen times over already. You wanna give up now?" McMillans face spread in a grin. "Show a little optimism for christ's sake."
"Fine, fine," Hendry interjected, "but can we just shut the fuck up 'til we get there. Three's company."
His companions gave a nod of agreement before continuing the descent.

Perched upon the highest spire of Baphomet's palace, Wilson stared out over the bustling necropolis, his attention riveted to the distant, seemingly insignificant shapes moving against the dark backdrop of the crater wall.
"This solves nothing", a soft voice called from beneath him. Looking down, he noticed the accompanying three Arch-Viles stood clustered below, flames occasionally licking from their bodies. "Our master commanded us to assist you in your task. Yet you wait rather than act." It was difficult for Wilson to discern which was speaking, since they had no visible mouths. "This makes no sense".
Wilson sighed, looking back up at the distant intruders. "It makes perfect sense, minions." Minions. And he, their master. He was enjoying this. "True, I intend to acquire the human Hendry. But I see no harm in tormenting his companions in the meantime."
"We intend to kill them" The Viles replied, their heads twitching to odd angles.
"Aah, but that would be to quick!" Wilson called down in reply, snapping the fingers of his remaining hand. "I am no battle stategist, yet even I can see where our kind failed before." He momentarily recalled a human life, but dismissed it just as quickly. "You blunder into battle! You stumble aimlessly towards the mortal enemy, intent only on their death! No, the approach should not be so brute and forceful. Undermine the enemy, intimidate them, terrify them! Not just with what they can see but with that which they can't." He took a breath, glancing down at his glistening prosthetic. "We allow them into the city. Attack, but allow them to reach the point of success. The Fortress. Then," He bought the weapon down onto his open palm. "we crush them."
"And if we refuse to follow your directions?" The Viles skin was beginning to glow fierce orange.
Wilson grinned. "You were ordered to obey me. Would you refuse this honour?"
One of the Viles stepped forward, its body glowing brighter and hotter. "You have no right, half-breed!" Its hands moved, pointing towards Wilson, the palms erupting into blazing fire.
With a bored sigh and a casual flip of his hand, Wilson sent a rocket screaming down towards the rebellious creature. The explosive projectile impacted square in its chest, shattering the torso outwards with a backwash of intense heat. He glanced over at the remaining creatures.
"You will obey", he growled.
The beasts kneeled in unison. "We obey", they intoned.

--------------------------------------------

"By the gods", Kalliope exclaimed. The trio had reached the city walls without incident, and stood before its gates. Immediatly before the great porculis lay three towering wooden pikes. Atop each of these, fixed like meat on a butchers hook, was a monstrous, dog-like head.
"Guess Spot did a boo-boo", Hendry muttered.
"Cerberus..." Kalliope seemed infuriated, her fists clenched at her sides.
"As in, the watchdog of Hades? Three-headed pooch?" McMillan shook his head. "Fine. Believe what you want. Just don't let it get in the way of the job".
The portculis began to rise, and the marines hurried to flatten themselves against the walls either side of Cerberus' gates. A pair of posessed humans stumbled out, carrying empty sacks and heading towards the crater wall.
"In, now!" The Colonel hissed. Slipping in as the gates began to close, the humans glanced around the area one more time before creeping into the shadows.

--------------------------------------------

Wilson watched as the last of his former comrades slipped into the shadows of a spawning factory, out of the view of the bustling demon workforce.
"The game's afoot" he muttered to no-one in particular before vanishing in a burst of flames. A few moments later, his fiery escorts followed.

I've got the major plot developments planned out (there's a big-ish one or two on their way). As for the story, i'd like to think that it'll continue long after the team leave the Underworld.
If I decide to follow along the lines of the original map list, the story will continue on in Greece (back at Athens Base) and then on to the Tartarus penal colony in orbit around Earth.
