Blurpy the RABID!!!!

Demon Fight Club - How To Get Them Going...

Recommended Posts

Hi hi all. Throughout the game, I've noticed how none of the monsters, whether they be demons or zombies, ever got into a fight with one another. My favorite thing about the original Doom was how one could get the monsters to slug it out if one critter accidentally injured the other. However, the monsters this time around seem to be more cooperative with one another. Since when did demons ever get along so well? =P

I've done a bit of toying around with the enemies via the "spawn" and "notarget" commands in the console after I beat the game. I'd spawn a pair of critters, shoot one with the pistol to get it angry at me, then walk behind the oblivious critter to dodge the angry critter's attacks. So far I primarily experimented only with the demons and the zombie commando's. Here's a few of the matches I set up:

Fight 1: Zombie Commando w. Chaingun vs. Hell Knight
- Round 1: I shot the Commando. He runs about and opens fire on me.
- Round 2: I duck behind the Hell Knight while the Commando is firing. The Hell Knight bleeds and flinches. o.o
- Round 3: The Hell Knight roars and begins tossing green fire at the Commando while it closes in. The Commando flinches in pain, but continues to shoot at me instead of the Hell Knight. The Hell Knight closes in and tears the Commando to ribbons.
= Outcome: the Hell Knight wins!

Fight 2: Revenant vs. Mancubus
- Round 1-3: I shot the Revenant to wake him up. He shoots rockets at me. I duck behind the blubbery Mancubus. Rockets hit the Mancubus. Mancubus continues to growl, suffering no injury. I put the Revenant down with a chainsaw.
= Outcome: stale mate. =/

Fight 3: Mancubus vs. Hell Knight
- Round 1-3: I shot the Mancubus this time, then ducked behind the Hell Knight. The Mancubus whaled away with its fireballs on the Hell Knight, and the Hell Knight looked about obliviously. I put the Mancubus down with the chainsaw as it attempted to whomp me over the head.
= Outcome: another stale mate. Ho hum... -.-

Fight 4: Hell Knight vs. Cyberdemon
- Round 1-3: I shot the Hell Knight, then ducked behind (under?) the Cyberdemon as the Hell Knight was hurling green fire. The green fire hits the Cyberdemon; the Cyberdemon farted on me as it was waiting for something worthy enough for it to destroy. I put the Hell Knight down with the chainsaw as it bit me in the face.
= Outcome: the Cyberdemon was tickled. Etc...

I can totally understand why the Cyberdemon didn't twitch - the Hell Knight wasn't wielding a Soul Cube. =P In the other demon vs. demon fights, the demons couldn't injure one another with their explosive & fire-based attacks. The "museum" part of the game pointed out how these critters are very resistant to extreme heat, so that kinda makes sense. =/ In the original Doom, imps were immune to other imps' fire, but barons of hell could injure imps, and vice versa.

In the Commando w. Chaingun vs. demon matches, the Commando was very successful in pissing off the demons with its piercing rounds. However, the dumb Commando was too stupid to defend itself as its face was being ripped off by the angered demons; instead of defending itself, it chose to keep targeting me instead.

This kinda disappoints me. It's nothing to make me hate Doom 3 - far from it. It's just a quirk that I miss from the old days. Does anyone know how to get the monsters to really tear into each other? If you know a way to get a certain kind of monster to attack another kind of monster, please do post it! I wanna know how to get the monsters to really throw their weight about. >=D

P.S. - it'd be cool if someone made a mod to the chainsaw so that the screen would shake around violently as you cut into a monster with it. I always thought that effect was so awesome in the original Doom... ^-^

Yeah, I've seen monsters fight each other in the standard single player game. Just last night one of the chaingun tentacle zombies pissed off a revenant and they went at it. The revenant one, but not as quickly as I would have thought.

I think the DooM 3 monsters are just smarter is all. It's like Chris Farley smacking Liu Kang with that wooden rod in Beverly Hills Ninja. The first few times Liu Kang just ignores it, but after so many hits he gets pissed and can't stands no more.

Perhaps the editor allows us to force monsters or at least allow monsters full in fighting capabilities? I haven't dabbled in it yet but I think it would be very interesting to have a kinda team setup going (let's say, start off with a small pack of marines).

Most people probably wouldn't be interested but I really like that kind of stuff.

Wow, you got a Revenant and the Commando to duke it out? By that I'm assuming that you mean that both critters were attacking each other, rather than one taking the beating as it continues to attack the player. Hm...

After my initial post I went back to do a little more testing. Here's a few more conclusions that I drew from my observations:

- Zombies don't seem to turn on those that attack it. At least, they won't turn on chaingun-toting Commando's...

- Hell Knights, when injured, will always take out their aggressions on those that dealt the blow. ALWAYS. They sure got a lot of attitude. =P

- A Hell Knight's green fire hurts other demons (except perhaps other Hell Knights, the Guardian, and ol' Cybie). The green fire has quite a respectable "splash" radius, too. The other demons won't strike back at the Hell Knight, however. I watched a Mancubus, Revenant, Imp, Archvile, and even a Vagary die at the hands of the Hell Knight's misdirected shots. The only reaction that ANY creature would have from the green fire is to move to another position out of the line of fire. Perhaps it's 'cuz they all fear the Hell Knights... But the Archvile and the Vagary fear them, too?!?!

- Hell Knights & Imps are pretty good at judging their aim when it comes to arching their shots. When they can, they'll catapult their fire up high into the air in order to ensure that they don't hit a creature that's in the way.

Perhaps the monsters are more prone to fighting one another if they were placed in the map when the map was made, as opposed to those that are placed using the "spawn" command on the console. They definitely don't act normally when spawned in that way, which is kinda odd. Most of the critters don't seem to move around as much; most usually just stand in place. The Archvile, in particular, won't summon any demons, nor does it use its fire attacks; it'll only claw you if you're too close. =/

I wanna do some more testing. Does anyone know the exact monster model names for the Cacodemon and the Lost Soul? By model name I mean the name you'd use in conjunction with the "spawn" command (ex. "spawn monster_demon_imp"). Perhaps electricity may spark a few fights. =P

just last night, i used notarget and spawned a vagary and a saboath..
the vagary reached for me but hit the saboath instead. the saboath just moved its arms around like it was stretching and just stared at the vagary.the vagary was right in front of the saboath. maybe he doesn't like to shoot his BFG at point blank range...

PS: is it possible to get imps to fight each other by getting one to scratch the other?

I swear I always see cacodemons fighting each other especially when coming back from hell. Also I've seen imps hurling at cacodemons too. Of course my perception could have been effected by my fear :)

in thr beginning if you use give all and toss a nade no one moves. you can take out the chainsaw and chop them up with out them moving too.i guess the only thing you can do if you use a cheat or commmand for anyone to notice is you can noclip and float over someones head and they will look up and if you move around them they will follow with their eyes

Speaking of cheating at the beginning one of the marine areas has a plasma rifle. I don't suppose there's a legit way to get it?

Edit:

Also I played with monster fighting. Any sort of zombie will piss the shit out of (wait, can you piss shit? anyway) a hell knight, but the hell knight doesn't seem to care if a fellow demon is doing the damage.

Basically, the Doom3 monsters have a rank value in their def file. I imagine it has something to do with this. The Cyberdemon has the highest of all monsters (3).

In all of Blurpy's fights except for the Chaingun Commando/Hell Knight one and the Cyberdemon/Hell Knight (his immunity to standard weapons probably prevented a fight), the rank of each enemy was the same (2). Try experimenting with a bog standard zombie (0) and a mancubus (2), or a revenant (2) and an imp (1).

if ur talking about combat prep room, then..
yes there shure is, but you need to figure out/find the code for the door, no key nessessary, get the code, its got pistol, shotgun, nades, plasma gun, and helth / armour

hmm im gonna have to try this rank system thingy out, and blurpy was right, its funny as hell watching the hellknight rip the zombie a new asshole, funny stuff, also try mancubus vs chainsaw commando,

I seen only one fight in the whole game. A Imp tossed a fire bomb at me but it hit a hell knight in the back instead. the hell knight turned around went after the imp, when he was done i yelled HellKnights RULE!! then he killed me after that i never tried to get on their good side again 8:(. i had saved just before that and it happened again the second time too. So i guess i really seen it twice.

I already experimented with three cacodemons and a hell knight. I got the three cacodemons all wild and blasting at me. I went behind the Hell Knight and nothing happened.

So I was like, 'eh, screw it.

So then I went to the elevator shaft in Mars City and spawned a Guardian and a Cyber-Demon. Hehe, of course neither did anything, but it was cool to see them staring in the face. Very AvP-like.

Oy, from what I can make out, two things apply when determining whether one monster will turn on another monster:

1.) Whether or not the damage dealt actually damaged the targeted monster;

2.) There does seem to be some kind of ranking system of some sort involved. Either that, or some monsters just refuse to attack certain other monsters.

Regarding number 1, an Imp won't fight an Imp because they're both relatively immune to fire (or, at least, each other's fire). Revenants' rockets don't seem to piss off any of the other demons. Cacodemons seem to be immune to each other's lightning balls, too. Etc., etc. However, when a zombie wielding a bullet-firing weapon opens fire and clips a bigger monster by accident, the chances are good that the big monster turns around and turns the zombie into pudding.

As for number 2, it's really hard to put my thumb on the whole thing. A Hell Knight will turn on a chaingun-toting zombie Commando, but a lesser zombie won't turn to strike back at the uncaring Commando. Zombies without guns just take their lickings and keep gunning for the player, rather than shamble towards the other attacker. All monsters seem to cringe away from an attacking Hell Knight, rather than defend themselves. It doesn't follow any clear pattern, though. I'm a bit disappointed in the monsters' lack of vicious animosity. =/ Perhaps a mod is in order to set this issue straight, old-school style. >=D

Dont get me wrong, i'd like too, but im too tired right now, But someone could just make a big square box with 3 of every kind of normal monster, no bosses, and see what happens.

I've actually seen imps kill each other with fireballs. It's happened more than once while I was reloading and one was standing front of the other. The rear one fired, hitting the one in front and killing it. I dont know if it's possible to make them fight though. As you've noticed, once an enemy has his sights set on you he will ignore everything else.
