HELP! Doom 3 runs poorly on my new PC!

Recommended Posts

system specs:

Win98SE (i hex edited the doom.exe to make this game run)
P4 3Ghz w/ HT Tech & 800Mhz FSB 1MB L2 Cache
1Gig Ram Dual Channel
nVidia GeForce 4 MX440 8X 64MB AGP w/ latest driver installed (recycled from old pc)
10 Gig Maxtor HDD (recycled from old pc)

I run this game in the lowest quality setting at 640x480 (the game recommends this)

*when in the doom 3 menu screen i get around 35-40 FPS (runs smooth)
*during cut scenes video is choppy 10-15 FPS
*during game play just walkin around still choppy especially when looking
at objects of high detail at a distance 10 FPS on avg.
*during combat its VERY choppy i cant even aim correctly or see enemy projectiles
coming at me. 2-5 FPS!!! WTF???

i thought when i upgraded and purchased this game i'd be getting at least 15 FPS during
heavy combat and 30 FPS for the rest of the time, but this bites!

i also did that seta image_cacheMegs thing which didn't seem to help much : (

It's a really bad idea to play Doom 3 with a GeForce 4 MX. Even worse is that you are using Windows 98 to play it as well, which I'm pretty sure hits the performance as well. Of course, a hard drive bigger than 10 gigs would be nice as well. Doom 3 takes up about 3 gigs itself, if I remember correctly.

I always considered GeForce cards to be pretty good for gaming... up until now :( I guess i'll have to shell out $200 for a new card after having spent $100 on this GeForce card 9 months ago, grrrr!

Any suggestions on what video card i should purchase with a budget of $150-200? (canadian $ btw). I'll be getting Windows XP this weekend. I'm just using this hex editing method for now until then.

Well, I'm pretty sure you could get a GeForce FX 5600 for around that much cash. That should be more than sufficient to play Doom 3.
