Uh, Shader-based hair/fur?

For the Baron of Hell in my re-texture, I want their legs to appear to have fur on them, much like the original sprites appear to show.

I know there's a way to do this, and this explains it (sorta, I couldn't code my way out of an human/imp orgy): http://www.lamrug.org/geohairtips.html but, would something like this work in Doom 3?
