My startpage got hijacked :-(

Recommended Posts

I've got a problem...

Every time I start Internet Explorer I get some page I never asked for and 6 pop-ups. This is very annoying since I cannot get rid of them. Changing my start page has no effect and neither do pop-up blockers. I looked on the net, and it seems my start page has been "hijacked". Meaning some-one installed something on my HD that automatically changed my configuration when I open IE.

I can't seem to find any software that can help me get rid of it. I have found programs like "Startpge Guard" that can prevent this from happening but can't cure existing problems.

What I need is a (free and downloadable) program that will remove this hijack. (BTW: I use Windows XP)

What I do NOT need is people telling me Windows and IE suck. I know they suck, but I'm stuck with them :-(

Can anyone pleeeaaaase help me?

first off, windows and IE suck.

Second, I had this problem a while ago. I went to download.com and got Adaware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. They cleared my problem right up.

Anyway, get those, clean your system and stop looking at horseporn.

I ran the latest version of Ad-Aware SE and found
"127 New Critical Objects"

most were "Malware" and some were "Data Miner" (what ever that is...)

It also said "C:\WINDOWS\system32\mui\0009\WINMGNT.EXE" was infected with a "ServU-Daemon" virus. I can't clean, delete or Quarantaine that file though...

My startpage was restored to normal and I don't get the pop-ups :-)
but, somehow I doubt it will last...
I'll get that spywareblaster.

Thanks for the help guys!

Anyway, get those, clean your system and stop looking at horseporn.

I prefere the term "educational media on interspecial reproduction" :-P

grab mozilla and use it over IE. its better. doesn't have near as many issues compared to IE. i have never had it hijacked.if you must use IE, i dont see why you would need to, set its security levels to maximum and disable activeX. dont know much about IE cause i stoped useing it 3 years ago
by the way google searching for porn is never a good idea

you are NOT stuck with IE. you CAN use a different browser. there is nothing forcing you to use it. if you are an AOL user dump AOL, or tell mommy and daddy to dump it. there are cheaper and better ISP's than AOL. If you are stuck with AOL you can still shrink it down and open up mozilla.

This year I've had multiple viruses, adware, spyware, a hack and a hijack on my PC. I've been thinking of switching to Linux for quite a while now, and this recent hijack might well be the final drop...

I spend like half an hour on Google every day. Every time a questions pops up in my mind, I'll look it up. This can be anything. Once I asked myself why a dolphin can stay under water for 20 minutes while it has lungs just like us humans.
While searching I found a page dedicated to 'dolphin lovers'. I must have read half way through before I realised what was actually meant by 'dolphin lovers'. The internet is full of sick people. Even the most harmless search words can give unexpected results. Just do an image searh for the word "dove" for example.

Making typo's is another way of getting on disturbing sites. Try typing "http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com" with an extra L in traveler...

The Internet must be 99 percent porn and/ or advertisement. No matter how good your filters are there is no way you'll be able to stay on the safe 1% all the time.

spyware viruses where a primary reason i made the switch to linux. however keep in mind linux is an entirly different OS. window's exe files cannot run nativly in linux, and it can be hit or miss with emulators.

however for the most part there are many great linux alternatives to windows programs. in some cases ports of common programs.

i still have windows 2000 installed, its reduced to being only used if i need windows, play doom III or play SH3.

also hardware, 99% of modems will not work with out any "tweaking" of drivers. this means you will need to compile drivers for the modem. this isnt as hard as it seems. for years i avioded compiling anything because i feared it ment i needed to know C++ or programing. in reality its easy provided you have all the correct stuff installed.
any external SERIAL modem should give you no issues. a good internal is the intel 536 based modems. also some ISP's will not work with linux, these include netzero, AOL and possibly juno. basicly any ISP that requires the use of some odd dialer, program or bar.
Also ATI cards are shit in linux. if you want to play games in linux get a Nvidia card

there are many flavors of linux. Suse and Mandrake are great for beginers. Knoppix is a great way to get a taste of linux without installing. you can download linux, but you need broadband. each file is about 650MB in size. these files are Cd images s you also need a burner.

I had few of those stupid hijacks pages. Suprisingly when this one hijack page got replaced with another hijack page, it had this teeny tiny link at the bottom of the large page of BS that actually had the program to get rid of the hijacks.

I use Mozilla Firefox and browse the net everyday. Ever since I switched, I don't think AdAware has found a single piece of spyware (granted, porn bores the shit out of me so I don't look at that). Odds have nothing to do with it. The features that get exploited in IE are simply not there in Firefox.

I personally have tried about five different versions of Linux on three different computers and they've given me nothing but trouble. Two of them even locked up during setup. Whereas Windows XP with Firefox's help runs all but flawlessly. You of course might have better luck, but I'd try switching to Firefox and see how you go before making such a time consuming and potentially trouble filled step.

If you keep having a problem, try talking to these guys http://forums.net-integration.net/ I went to them a while back because I had some major Adware and Malware problems (which Ad-Aware or Spybot couldn't get rid of) and they told me how to fix it. Remember, Ad-Aware and Spybot won't catch everything. Also, get FireFox, it works better and blocks more bugs than IE.

Be glad you didn't have 256 like one of my friends had when we cleaned out his system.

I also suggest getting Spyware Blaster. It also does a nice job of making sure certain things don't get into your machine in the first place.

Plus a nice firewall wouldn't hurt either. :)

Oh yes, and a sweep of unwanted objects on your start-up list doesn't hurt either.
