Welcome To My Nightmare

Recommended Posts

I was about to post a story about how Henning Skogsto had done a full run of Doom 2 in Nightmare! in 31:36, but then he went and quickly uploaded another one in 31:12 instead. He's on fire! Boom shaka laka!

WTF, the previous record seems to have been 34:13.. somehow this manages to shave 3 minutes off.

The previous record was 31:59, but it was after the last compet-n update (still in /incoming).

The record for the Nightmare with 100% secrets run is Vile's 30ns5600. I wonder if Henning will have a go at getting that record back too...

I'm not sure when the next update is going to arrive. Adam Hegyi said a while back that he planned to update "after he finished Doom3" and I'm pretty sure he did, so uh, who knows what's on the horizon. There was also that sequence of contests planned but that never concluded, and I guess competition would be quiet with so little going on.

Oh well, updates aren't a big deal anymore since everything new is always readily available.

I really wish I had a source port that actually played demos properly.

What's wrong with PrBoom?

Is it just me or does anyone else have problems downloading demos from compet-n? I've tried many times over the past year to no avail.

If you have problems accessing the ftp site, then you can try these:
http://competn.doom2.net/pub/compet-n/ (the main archive)
http://competn.doom2.net/incoming/compet-n/ (stuff that has arrived since the last update, including 30nm3112)

The DSDA archive can likewise be accessed via http:
http://competn.doom2.net/pub/sda/

Relica Religia: If you have problems with PrBoom, then Eternity is just about as good for playing back Doom2.exe demos (desyncs are extremely rare with either port).

The current version of Eternity worked fine for me.

The sad thing is I don't think I ever beat the game in single player. I've done it many times in coop, though. I'm pretty sure I could do it in UV without a problem since I've played through all the levels so many times.

i uh cant get it to play in prboom, ive tried everything i can think of i open the console and type playdemo 30nm3112.lmp and it says not found... its in the same directory as prboom itself, thank you, in advance, for your help

Don't try to do it from the console. Use either:

  • a command line (prboom -playdemo 30nm3112) - this is just like it was in the original game
  • (as sargebaldy says) drag and drop works fine in this instance
  • click on the file in Explorer and tell it to open it with prboom

Fantastic demo, makes it look so easy

Heh, how true. I booted up Doom and try to reproduce some of the tricks, and found out exactly how hard it is compared to how utterly effortless he made it look.

Thanks for all comments and compliments folks :-) Alot of very hard
work went behind the making of this one. I had to play for weeks just to "get where I once was" skillwise. I'm not sure when I started practicing again, but it was pretty much right after Vile submitted his 30nm3306 I think. Halfway thru I wasn't even sure myself how all this where going to work out. Didn't feel that I had "the kick" anymore inside me that is needed. Anyhow, I kept coming back to it. In the process leading up to this one I got to do the following 30nms::

(sorted by date. If someone wants to archive these before I lose
them, then plz let me know)

- 30nm3231 (28.06.04)
- 30nm3227 (28.06.04)
- 30nm3228 (28.07.04)
- 30nm3325 (18.08.04)
- 30nm3211 (13.09.04)
- 30nm3136 (28.09.04)

So as you can see from this, it has been a pretty long learning curve altogether :) Just thought I'd mention this for those who aren't too heavily involved with demo recording. I can assure you that it's not just a couple of tries behind all this :) Even though I started working on my first 30nm at the end of '99 that wasn't gonna be enough obviously :)
