D3 boots, loads, and crashes. Help, anyone?

Recommended Posts

OK People, I've got major problems goin on: everytime I start Doom, it goes strait to the loading picture with Mars burning and the Id logo, loads the game, initializes the menus, and BAM! the game shuts down. I reinstalled, but to no avail, and installed the softmod drivers with the same result. I then switched over to the Omega drivers, but that didn't help, either. I finally managed to get it to load to the console by adding +com_allowConsole 1 in the shortcut properties, but when I try to load a save game or demo from there the game crashes. Also, I have the gamma boosted in the game, and so when the game crashes the gamma stays boosted on the desktop and I have to go switch it back in the display properties. I do have the video card oc'd (9600SE), but its never given me any trouble before, and Far Cry (and everything else) still runs perfect. The whole game was running fine until a few days ago, and I have no ideas left. Any suggestions?

And btw, stay the hell away from the 9600SE's; I think it stands for S**t Edition.

Well, for starters you should try undoing your overclocking (if you havent already). According to the guys at id, Doom 3 is sensitive to overclocking.

Also make sure that you have the latest version of DirectX.

Finally, there is now a patch available for doom 3. You can see a list of mirrors in this thread.

Well, My vmem is set to 2GB, D3 is updated , DirectX is updated, and my video card has been restored to the factory clock; none of them worked, however. Got anymore ideas?

I'm having the same problem. Technical support gave up trying to solve it.
What mainboard do you have ?

I have a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU, so does a friend of mine who also has this problem. Also we both have Powercolor 9800 pro.

It's an ASUSTek P4B-LX, P4 1.6Ghz Willamette CPU, and my god-forsaken ATI-made 9600SE to go with it. This thing is ancient; doesn't even have DDR RAM in it. It all came in the Sony Vaio(!) that my parents INSISTED on getting in 2001 because it came with a video camera. Of all the stupid reasons... Anyway, I've tried everything I could think of (upgraded all the drivers on the PC, flashed the M-board bios, etc.) and it still doesn't work. Looks like I may have to reformat and reinstall XP. I hope HL 2 and Halo 2 aren't this big of a headache.

doom 3 runs fine in a 9600SE. we ran it at work with one. though in some parts it is a bit laggy. however its perfect in MP. granted you cant really run it well at high and at 1024x768. but still looks really good around 800x600

return the card to its default settings, as well as the computer. if you have that CPU overclocked it could cause issues too. but you are on the border with CPU. other thibngs that help is to check memmory useage. IE if you have spyware running or if you got a crapload of other stuff running.

i personaly have a 9600XT, a guy at work has the 9600SE and one guy has gotten it to play fine on a 9200 ATI and a geforce 4 MX-440

I don't think it really has anything to do with the hardware; it ran perfectly fine at 800x600 w/o any issues. It just started crshing out of the blue for no discernable reason. Also, I regularly check for spyware with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Webroot's Spy Sweeper, so I highly doubt it's an issue. Each time I ran it while it was working, I made a point of shutting down all superfluous processes and SysTray programs via the task manager, and all of my hardware is at the default clock speeds as well, so I think I'm majorly screwed.

On another note, I tried to upgrade my BIOS earlier, and after flashing it successfully, I coldn't boot into XP; I got to a command prompt, but no further. I reverted to the old BIOS version and XP booted normally, but now my integrated sound hardware won't work. For some reason the mixer got disabled, or deleted, or something... Any help with either problem would be greatly appreciated.

I feel like an idiot. I was just about ready to reinstall XP when I realized there was something I hadn't tried yet; I went and deleted the cfg file for Doom. It worked. :-)

Now with it back up and running, I'd like to say thanks for all the help, you guys (regardless of wheher it worked or not.) ...and thanks in advance for all future assistance.
