Quake 3's Doom bot chat

Recommended Posts

Hello there, and welcome to a new edition of "When FlatHead's Analysis Goes Too Far". Today I will be dissecting a particular feature of Quake 3 Arena: the chat messages the "Doom" bot uses during deathmatch. It probably doesn't mean much, but it could just shed some light on what the id guys think of Doom and its protagonist.

Messages initiated when Doom bot enters the game:

"I keep going 'round in circles ... no escape."
"You demons don't stand a chance against me."
"Dooooooooooommmmmmmmm!"

Messages initiated when Doom bot exits the game:

"Job's done here. Gotta move on... too many demons..."
"All roads lead to hell. Every last one of 'em."

Messages initiated when the match ends:

"Turn up the heat! Not good enough! Never friggin' good enough!"
"This isn't the end. I'll be back to finish what I started."
"Over? I haven't found the blue key card yet!"
"Listen up and listen good, I don't do mediocre."

Messages initiated when Doom wins the match:

"I've been to hell... you toads are nothing!"
"They all die! Isn't that enough! How many more will be thrown at me?"

Messages initiated when Doom loses the match:

"I was last once before, and a whole planet paid the price."

Messages initiated when Doom hits something:

"Nothing like a good flesh wound. Stirs the soul doesn't it?"
"For just a moment, your sweet screams of agony made the voices stop."
"I'm the surgeon and this is my operating table. Will the bodies ever stop?"

Messages initiated when Doom falls in lava:

"I've been to hell once ... kinda felt like this."

Messages initiated when Doom falls in slime:

"shouldn't this stuff be in barrels!?!"
"Somebody went outta their way to make this feel like home."

Messages initiated when Doom is killed with the Gauntlet:

"They had cold hands, too. So cold."

Messages initiated when Doom is killed with the BFG:

"That toy ain't no BFG."

Messages initiated when Doom makes a kill with the Gauntlet:

"Need... Berserk pack... must... have... berserk pack!"
"Groovy!"
"This will do just fine 'til I get me a chainsaw."

Messages initiated when Doom is hunting someone down:

"An endless row of graves...too many to put the names on."
"You were there, on Phobos. I saw you running away. I found you now."

Miscellaneous chat:

"They died in my arms. So many lost friends...but they're with me now."
"He cried, you know. Said he didn't want to die. Then he did."
"Get out of me! Oh, they won't shut up!"
"Join the Marines, see the universe... geez."
"Where's the freakin' red key card?"

You'll have to open up the pak0.pak file with WinZip and look for "botfiles\bots\doom_t.c".

I also noticed that the favorite weapon of Q3´s Doom isn´t an oldschool weapon like the shotgun, plasmagun or the rocketlauncher...it´s the railgun. Maybe that is a hint too?

Or maybe he just |-|a><0r's your doom2 folder and plays zdoom with the railgun.bex (wtf, ok that was lame).

Sweet stuff.

It's things like this that sort of hints at what was the original aim of Doom, a dark suspenseful ride through a torturous journey into hell and back.

I hope they manage to finally capture that feeling with the new Doom.
