Caco-Puff Posted December 12, 2004 Okay so I had an idea for a home made Railgun of sorts. Get a testtube,Coil it in insulated copper wire.Apply a brief electronic current. And whammo,Nail is shot. Does anyone know if this would work completely or not? 0 Share this post Link to post
Dr. Zin Posted December 12, 2004 No way would it generate enough force. 0 Share this post Link to post

Bucket Posted December 12, 2004 If(when) you die during the course of this little science project, can I have your CD's? 0 Share this post Link to post
AirRaid Posted December 12, 2004 Short Answer? No. It would not work. At All. No ifs or buts, it wouldn't. 0 Share this post Link to post
Caco-Puff Posted December 12, 2004 Portable Nailguns would beg to differ :P 0 Share this post Link to post

Fredrik Posted December 12, 2004 Yes, it will work. Just make sure you are using enough power and an appropriate voltage, say 80 000, and hold on to the gun while firing, just to make sure the recoil doesn't damage any surrounding equipment. 0 Share this post Link to post

pilottobombadier Posted December 12, 2004 No, it wouldn't work. The required electricity to make it work is off the scale. Plus you need to have a very powerful electromagnet on a rail - hence the name of the railgun in the firstplace, iirc. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted December 12, 2004 yea those things use alot of power and as of now are not very efficient compared to chemical explosives. i remember seeing a home made "rail gun" on a site a while back, but it didn't launch at high speed. not even a speed that could hurt or leave a bruse. try making a tesla coil or something. 0 Share this post Link to post

Planky Posted December 12, 2004 Also: http://www.oz.net/~coilgun/home.htm I have built a coilgun using the instructions on that website. Works quite well. 0 Share this post Link to post

As a few people have said, that's a coilgun not a railgun. Try railgun.org, it's very informative and has some cool videos. 0 Share this post Link to post
