Partial Reality Demo

Recommended Posts

It's been a while but here's another 'reality' demo by me, this time Doom 2 levels 1-8 in Ultra Violence.

It is only a Work In Progress really, hence the cut off ending, as soon as I can be bothered I'll end it properly and time it. I use a liberal version of a reality demo to mean only no damage can be sustained, I do however use the BFG so technically this demo isn't really a reality demo, unless of course you cut out the last level. And naturally it is a TAS demo recorded using Andrew Budko's glboom 2.2.6 modification.

You can get my last finnished attempt at a Doom 2 No Damage run here although be warned it's over 2 hours long.

Edit: Forgot this forum doesn't support HTML so forgive links in odd places

I've tidied up the links a bit. These forums do support vB code.

It is true that Panter's original definition of "Reality" prohibited use of plasma weapons. However, few demos exist today using this restriction. Also, many of them are made for maps where there are no plasma rifles or BFGs present (so the restriction doesn't matter). Therefore there seems to be(?) a consensus that Panter's original definition best describes "Real Reality" and that "Reality" has gradually become equivalent to "taking no damage".* Thus, all "reality" demos over maps with no plasma weapons are automatically "real reality" demos.

Great to see an improvement attempt, BTW. I very much enjoyed your first one.

*=At least the few people who care about the playing style seem to be in agreement on this.

I'm impressed that you're managing to keep to something like the speedrun routes without taking any damage. I would have expected you to need to slow down a bit more. It will be interesting to see if you can keep this up on the later maps.

Yes, all six of us. :p

TBH, I've never been too convinced by the idea that, e.g., the plasma gun is any less "real" than the berserk fist. Or a host of other things in the game.

The later levels should be challenging, if for no other reason than I'm not practiced and experienced at them.

Probably won't continue with it until after christmas so we'll see what happens.

Edit: Btw, are there any good places to get TAS and non TAS reality demos, they seem to pretty hard to come by. I know you have a few TAS ones on the DSDA Kristin but any aside from that? I want to do some single level demos but wouldn't mind a base to compare them with.

Reality demos are quite rare, especially if you don't include speedruns where the player happened to be able to avoid damage without losing speed (e.g. "Oh, it's reality too").

Albert Valls has done quite a few reality demos, and in many of his TAS Max demos, Andy Olivera avoids taking any damage (generally, he appears to avoid it if he can do so without losing too much speed). Some of Ledmeister's Master Levels demos are reality too. This search should help you locate most of those at DSDA, while Andy Olivera's demos can be found via his level reviews. In his text-file he indicates which demos are done without taking a hit (he doesn't call it reality though, and he does use plasma weapons).
