are there any good mars surface textures anywhere?

You could use stones from Plutonia and edit the pallete to make them red.

BTW, I know you were/are interested in KRoNoS' mod, does it has something to do with your request?

IIRC the surface of Mars is actually brown. The planet just looks red from space because of its atmosphere.

Makes sense. The surface being covered in ironoxide, rust, and rust is usually a brown-reddish color.

Something like that. Or the snow textures from Surge. Lots of possibilites. I've coloured some flat texture I found shock-red, same with the ROCK5 and ROCK6, I think, Doom2 wall textures, looks pretty nice, not realistic, but artistically they look perfect. You can find some screenshots in my thread in "WADs & Mods", "Looking for someone to compile a fucking graphics WAD".

But really, all you need is some terrain textures, use some imagination, pick one and recolour it.
