doom level p2p sharing tool!

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks!

In another topic i posted the idea of a peer to peer network client for sharing doom wad files.
In my opinion, more and more servers will shut down and we would have to use commercial downloading services.
To circumvent this i had the idea of developing a p2p tool for doom levels that community members on a flat can run so that we can get our levels without waiting in queues or wasting bandwith with banners and popups.
As i am involved in other projects at the moment it is impossible to work on such a baby, but if someone in here likes my idea, i would like to see it in real working code that i and others could betatest ;)
(Besides, i know shit about tcp-ip :-( )

So Long, The Werelion!

sorry this isnt a new idea and it isnt any less dumb now then it was the first time someone proposed it

seriously, who the hell is going to bother running some standalone program just so other people can leech doom files from them.

exactly. the only thing you need is auto-download of a wad upon connecting, or whatever essential file you're missing.

Sounds like a webpage with links to .torrent files. :p

No, more like a kazaa just for wad files.

You just didnt get it, or?
For the sake of not:
a) seeing ads
b) waiting in a queue
c) kissing ass of some commercial sites just to download a fscking wad

Why do you think i am using firefox with adblock extension?
But this isnt the holy grail either as more and more sites go on using overlay popups.

And for the leeching part, why do you think people have emule running without downloading themself? ;)

Not to mention with a possible virus threat. I'll just stick to greece.

Aehmmm... nein... nicht wirklich...
Tell me how a wad file can host a virus that will get executed when you run it in *insert favourite port here*.
Aint possible as .WAD Files dont posses x86 binary code and the scripting languages that exists dont allow file acces.

If the program used very little resources i'd be willing to stick in my system tray to let people leech. Most wads aren't that big anyway. And i think this would be a great alternative if the big FTP sites went bottom up..

I sure as hell wouldn't but I'd certainly leech off other people if I needed a Doom wad.

But i presume that you are an US Aamerican so you most surely like to:

Punch you in the face? You're a dipshit if you generalize Americans like everyone does. WE'RE NOT ALL THE SAME, JUST LIKE YOU'RE NOT, YOU FUCKING MORON. If I wanted to be a generalizing cockhead like you I'd say all Germans are Nazis, all Brits have bad teeth and all Canadians are stupid.

Any program that sends a file to you has the potential to be exploited to send you a .exe file.

This would be a lousy "solution" to a non-existent problem.

There are still several good mirrors, and the archive is only a few gigs, so it's well within the resources of people in the community to arrange for new mirrors to be created. Let's just hope that Ty doesn't quit any time soon...

No problem for me here.

Ok, sorry to all wo felt offended, i have overreacted here.
Wasnt my target to generalize all US citizenz.

Yeah, when it is coded without security in mind. Thats realy something for a networking guru.

And what someone else here mentioned about downloading it while joining a game, i dont want to wait until someone hosts a RTC3052 Hub2 Game :D

If you say that everyone generalizes Americans, then aren't you also generalizing? ;-)

Might be a good idea if something was to happen to the archives.

If something "happens" to the archives, it's not going to be so catastrophic as to delete the original as well as all of the mirrors. Besides, this wouldn't be a replacement for the archives anyways; who has the entire /idgames directory on their hard drive and is willing to share it?

Id might be working on a steam like tool.

You mean, you're gonna come up with something that reserves potential future charges for you in the licence agreement and takes us 10 hours to register?

Lets call it Kwadzaa :P Seriously, whats wrong with using /idgames. The idea sounds cool in theory, but filesharing involves people who are willing to let thier files be accessed by others. Actually fuck it, I think this is a fairly cool idea, but no one else seems to. Also, gargoylol, Doomsearch.com is dead :P

Also, some ISPs are against p2p because they can't defend against the RIAA. Adelphia being one of them :(

On some ISPs where the RIAA have won over, the RIAA will go after anyone on hosting anything, not just music.

Two years back I got disconnected and a "violation notice" simply for having a quake server hosted :(

(hell, they'll probably go after me for posting this statement)
