Fredrik Posted March 23, 2005 How odd, for once I seem to agree with Numbermind. I should shift position. 0 Share this post Link to post

She could've been at peace years ago, but you opt to have her suffer in her state. REAL HUMANE. Fucking selfish, that's all her parents are. Who do they think they're trying to save, anyway? The 'old' Terri? Guess what: she's gone forever. You have nothing there but an empty shell of a person. It leaves a void in you. It most certainly leaves a void in her(so to speak). The parents are just being selfish because they can't cope with loss. The fact that this woman who is-- for all intents and purposes-- dead and yet capable of the most BASIC motor functions only enables the family to indulge. Yeah. 0 Share this post Link to post

Arioch Posted March 23, 2005 If you consider the Christianity argument, if she is freed from her mortal coils now her complete and undamaged soul could be set loose to join Jesus in heaven. Or something. Whereas now even if she is aware of anything her brain is so damaged that her mind would be incapable of understanding. 0 Share this post Link to post
Scuba Steve Posted March 23, 2005 Zodiak said:...her skumbag husband wants her to die... You've obviously met him, what's he like? He seems pretty reasonable whenever I've seen him on TV, but that's not enough for me to make any character judgments about him. You on the other hand must be a close aquaintance I assume? 0 Share this post Link to post
Piezo Posted March 23, 2005 I read somewhere that the reason that people involved in politics that are getting involved in this case, are only doing it for a reason that has nothing to do with helping her, just helping themselves. If that's true, then that's just apalling. I'm also offended by the incredibly ignorant things the protesters are saying and doing. I think that the best way to make a decision in this is to see exactly how much brain activity she has. If she is virtually brain dead, which she really appears to be, then there is really no point. This case is just sad; it's sad to be trapped, and it's sad to die. 0 Share this post Link to post
Arioch Posted March 23, 2005 Over a 15-year period - Schiavo collapsed in February 1990 - that calculates out to a cost between $821,000 and $1.1 million. In 1992, Michael Schiavo received a settlement from a malpractice case in which he pledged to take care of his wife for the rest of her natural life, and she was expected to have a normal life span. After costs, Terri Schiavo's guardianship account netted $700,000 and her husband received $300,000 for loss of consortium. Little is left of the guardianship money. 0 Share this post Link to post

Cyb Posted March 23, 2005 Zodiak said:It's kinda like shes buried alive, she can't do anything, but is still alive. I don't think you are quite grasping what persistent vegetative state means. She alive like a tree or a flower is alive. She has no thought. She can't do anything, but she is also not aware of anything. Here's a picture of a (non-recent) CAT scan: That big blue gap in the middle of her brain is spinal fluid. More info here: http://www.amptoons.com/blog/archives/2005/03/20/regarding-the-cat-scan-of-terri-schiavos-brain/ (I apologise for citing a blog, but the guy is very knowledgeable on the subject) edit: rofl! Spinal fluid surrounds the major neural tissue of the body, ie the spinal column and the brain. It's a cusion for them because they're very, very sensetive. They're also very metabolic compared to other body tissue, which is why the cortex dies so quickly without oyxgen. Terri's brain was cut off from oxyget for around 10 mins 15 years ago. If you lose parts of your brain for whatever reason (losing small parts is survivable) the dead neurons are cleaned up by the body the replaced with spinal fluid. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv 0 Share this post Link to post

You know, I had said something similar at school the other day, and everyone just yelled at me to shut up. Fuck them! It's true though isn't it? Why the fuck would you bother saving someone in that condition? What are the chances that she's actually going to wake up! I would rather die than spend the rest of my life like Terri Shaizo. 0 Share this post Link to post

Giomancer Posted March 24, 2005 Cyb said:There is a lot of misinformation about this whole thing. Her parents were able to contest it simply because she lacked a living will, plus they got lots of unconstitutional help from one judge and Jeb Bush as well as Congress mosty recently. Actually, the "help" that Congress and Jeb gave was indeed constitutional (re: article 3), but I agree that it was pandering by a bunch of idiots. - Gio [edit]fixed my intent[/edit] 0 Share this post Link to post
Dodge Posted March 24, 2005 Scabbed Angel said:How's her husband a scumbag? He doesn't want her to "live" in such a way. I'd rather starve to death. Personally I'm just sick of hearing about it. People starve everyday. People die everyday and they don't get huge media attention. It's a persoanl matter between the parents and the husband. Damn, you took the words right out of my mouth... Yeah, it's no fucking wonder the American economy is so fucked up right now. We waste millions of dollars a year on keeping people in a vegetative state alive just because the public isn't adult enough to accept that big thing in the universe called LIFE. Shit happens. Deal with it. 0 Share this post Link to post

Gokuma Posted March 24, 2005 This kinda reminds me of One Flew Over the Kookoo's Nest. Whether it's this or a full frontal lobotomy, if someone's mind is basically dead with no chance for recovery, then the rest of the body might as well be too. 0 Share this post Link to post
Job Posted March 24, 2005 We talked about this type of junk in philosophy. Some of it Deontological ethics, some not. I recall part of the arguement for leaving a vegetable alive is that they may come up with a cure or treatment for the comatose person and that's the hope the family clings to. That or the possibility the person may just snap out of it at one point. Biologically speaking, though, neither looks very feasible. 0 Share this post Link to post
