I read somewhere that the reason that people involved in politics that are getting involved in this case, are only doing it for a reason that has nothing to do with helping her, just helping themselves. If that's true, then that's just apalling. I'm also offended by the incredibly ignorant things the protesters are saying and doing.
I think that the best way to make a decision in this is to see exactly how much brain activity she has. If she is virtually brain dead, which she really appears to be, then there is really no point.

I don't think you are quite grasping what persistent vegetative state means. She alive like a tree or a flower is alive. She has no thought. She can't do anything, but she is also not aware of anything. Here's a picture of a (non-recent) CAT scan:

edit: rofl! Spinal fluid surrounds the major neural tissue of the body, ie the spinal column and the brain. It's a cusion for them because they're very, very sensetive. They're also very metabolic compared to other body tissue, which is why the cortex dies so quickly without oyxgen. Terri's brain was cut off from oxyget for around 10 mins 15 years ago. If you lose parts of your brain for whatever reason (losing small parts is survivable) the dead neurons are cleaned up by the body the replaced with spinal fluid.

This kinda reminds me of One Flew Over the Kookoo's Nest. Whether it's this or a full frontal lobotomy, if someone's mind is basically dead with no chance for recovery, then the rest of the body might as well be too.

We talked about this type of junk in philosophy. Some of it Deontological ethics, some not. I recall part of the arguement for leaving a vegetable alive is that they may come up with a cure or treatment for the comatose person and that's the hope the family clings to. That or the possibility the person may just snap out of it at one point. Biologically speaking, though, neither looks very feasible.
