Oh noes (anti-gaming parents strike again!)

OH SHIT I BETTER NOT PLAY THIS GAME OR I MIGHT GET HIGH

EDIT:

Walsh concedes Midway is not promoting the title for children, but says he knows from experience that teenagers gravitate towards M-rated games that generate a lot of buzz. Popular titles such as Grand Theft Auto and Halo 2, both rated for 17+ gamers, are enormously appealing to teenagers, says Walsh. He says chances are that a game like Narc could end up in their hands, and warp their minds:

Gee I wonder whose fault that is.

You know, I was at EBGames a few weeks ago to pick up my copy of Resurrection of Evil (the Doom 3 Expansion), and I saw some kid that looked to be about.. 12.. sitting there begging his mom to buy him Narc. The person at the front desk was trying to explain to her that the game was very violent and all that, but I guess she didn't care. That's probably because most parents nowadays think, "If it'll get them to shut up for a while, I'll get them whatever they want".

Oh yeah, and Narc looks like a stupid game anyway.

it teaches a good lesson. Drugs exist and they can fuck you up, or they won't appear to fuck you up, but they will.

NOT TRUE. Drugs CAN be handled responsibly. There are people that can blow some coke once in a while and be fine or something. Not everyone gets sucked in and turns into a drug zombie.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has denounced the game in his push to pass the Safe Games Act in his state.

Super Mario has NOTHING to do with drugs. People need to stop thinking about things so much.

And coke can give someone a fatal heart attack the first time they try it. Coke and heroin are just awful shit no good can come of. Weed on the other hand is alright.

Only $19.99? What a cheap P.O.S.

I would rather have my money well-spent. Which was why I bought Doom in the first place.

So are we joining their heroic struggle against game violence, drugs and mind poisoning or are we just gonna smoke a biff while blowing up some cool shit up on computer?

Hmmm, say NO to protesters.

These are the kind of people that are bringing America down to a decline. Religious fanatics are trying to make it where movies YOU pay for to rent out of a video store are censored because it's too hard to be a parent and say "no son, you can't watch this movie" because then it'll make you a very bad parent so you have to be what all other people in the world must do, blame everything on video games and movies instead of accepting the fact that your a bad parent. Speaking of religious fanatics, these people are the ones sitting here saying censorship is out of hand and absolutely violent, yet dont seem to think that 40 people dieing in Iraq everyday is considered violent and gorey.

Actualy, you are kind of wrong. It is almost always a democrat *cough* Lieberman *cough* Blagojevich looking to do this shit, you know...the ones against the war. They are the ones that want to say what you should and shouldn't do with your money.

If a child's mind can be so easily warped by a mere video game, then I wouldn't really trust them with one so much. :D I mean, I love Sonic and all, but I haven't tried to jump on someone. Though I have tried countless times to spin-dash and run very fast, and go Super and Hyper. But no harm or bad has come from that, just an imagination of a child. :D

I myself don't like gore all that much, or any adult themes, in game or actual life. (Funny coming from someone who loves DOOM. :D) So likewise, I wouldn't be too comfortable with any of my children being so into games that are far beyond their age limit or maturity level. Even so, however, I would have faith in their ability to tell right from wrong in real life. A game is a game, it doesn't matter (for most games) what they do in them, as long as it ain't brought into reality. :D

I think both sides have good points. If the game really does have realistic choice-consequence aspects, then that's a plus...

...But what if kids get bored with the game early and quit before they reach the "consequence" part? Then they will have a different idea. I know that after I played Duke3D E3L1, I had a wicked craving for Chinese food. After I watched someone play Blake Stone, vending machines were very alluring.

I think that kids should be playing better games.

"They [Midway] do portray the extreme that the use of drugs can lead to bad outcomes, and the game penalizes you for misusing drugs. But the flip side of that message is that some drug use actually enhances play and enhances your performance. That's the glorification part. That's the dangerous message: Drugs are OK, just don't overdo it."

I don't see the problem here.

I think Ling said it best though:

I could play a videogame that revolves around raping underaged homeless girls while snorting coke and kicking orphans and war widows in the face while spitting on the flag and blowing up Mr. T as I sit and laugh in my animal-pelt fur-lined La-Z-Boy covered in hookers with 87 STDs and guess what, it won't affect me because I KNOW WHAT IS REAL LIFE AND WHAT ISN'T.

The thing is, the real danger are people who can't tell the difference between right and wrong to begin with. If the game serves as a catalyst, chances are something would have happened that would have inspired them to cross the line at some time. Focus needs to be taken off games and onto the parents and teachers to profile children/students for warning signs. But that's not as easy as saying "ban video games because they are the devil".

When I go crazy I'm going to blame spounge bob... man I hate that little bastard.

Yea, it looks like your parents are doing a great job monitoring you! I'm sure they must be great not knowing all the porn and gore you've seen just at your own computer screen. Shut the fuck up

BBG it's generally not up to the person to decide whether they want to be addicted to a certain substance or not.

It's okay to say what you should or shouldn't do. It's not okay to say fuck it and force the issue like both the "liberals" and "conservatives" do when they want games censored or they want to start war for oil respectively, thus further limiting your rights which your ancestors fought and paid for with their own blood. ;)

Warp their minds, my ass: Virtually everyone I know has most of the GTA's yet they don't go around beating the crap out everything that moves nor do they want to.

Besides, NARC looks shit anyway.

For a moment I thought they were going against the old 1989 side-scrolling game and said to myself, "Damn...what rock have they been living under?"

WHO GIVES A FUCK?!!

There will always be these petty shitheads that fixate on works of fiction to burn while not taking notice of genocides, mercury and other pollution rising, escalating cancers rates, and more and more children becoming autistic or being born with missing limbs.

What we could do is, instead of bitching long distance on the deaf internet, get in these people's faces or at least make them uneasy should you happen to encounter them out in the world. If you see people protesting outside a Toys R Us about violent games, mock them with stuff like "Ignorance not Education" and "Let ratings do your parenting for you" or "So what if my kid is autistic and deformed from corporate poison, as long as he isn't exposed to violent fiction" or "Government sanctioned real murder is ok but fictional violence is evil." Wear T-Shirts with sayings like that painted on to piss people off or get them thinking. Or if you just want to bitch on internet, come up with a controversal site that gets a lot of traffic.
