Maybe a stupid question

Does anybody have good links on using the buildin editor from doom 3? Because i honestly dont really understand it. I used hammer 3.5 to make a .map file and i opened that with it and i got some ugly map working, but that's all. I want to know how to create the brushes in there (and why are there only 2 2d views? That's... weird)
